Potential new player questions
Hey all
I have only ever played the baseball version of OOTP and ofc the realism down to the last minute is undeniably. Not a think I can’t do in it that can be done in baseball. So I guess I want to know is the hockey the same way down to the last drop realistic |

I'm not sure I totally understand what you mean by "realism" but if you mean is the game authentic to hockey I believe so. It certainly isn't a fantasy game and not a joystick game where you can outplay worse teams with your eye-hand coordination. The game is loaded with leagues, teams, players, and stats just like OOTP and other sports management games. The results are generally what you would expect over the course of a season.

I'm going to hijack this thread to ask some questions of my own too, as I'm feeling that hockey GM itch again. I last played FHM8 when I wrote extensive thoughts on the game back in the FHM8 forums, and these are the issues that kept bugging me back then. Could FHM10 players tell how the game handles these things now:
* In NHL, is the qualifying offer to an RFA player an actual contract that has a salary and a duration? Before it was just a toggle whether you wanted to keep the player's rights or release him whereas a real-life qualifying offer must match a certain salary depending on the player's previous contract, and the QO might actually be higher than the team's perception of the player's value in some cases. To pick an example, Henri Jokiharju has a 2,6m QO this upcoming summer with Buffalo. Are the Sabres going to offer him that or will he become a UFA? * Is there any salary arbitration mechanic for eligible players? * Do AI coaches still play their 4th liners only 6min / game even in modern day leagues? Or even better, do coaches have attributes for their preferred minutes distribution like they do for their prospect/veteran preference, for example? * Is there any kind of "team vision" to discuss/negotiate with the owner. "Play more youth", "Make the playoffs in the next 3 years", "retain our club legends until retirement", "Start hoarding draft picks". Anything? * How are the contract negotiations with your players? Is there anything other to discuss apart from salary & length? Do players want designated power play time, or a certain role in the team, immediately or starting from next season? If an agent presents you with a short-term contract offer, can you ask what they'd want on a longer-term deal, or vice versa? * How is the AI squad & cap management? If they have an over the hill goalie on the last year of his 4,5m annual salary who's demoted to AHL by now, do they still tend to re-sign him for one more season for 5 million? Do they still forget to sign their 4,5 star potential lottery pick prospects after their juniors eligibility for some reason? * Is player development still sort of mechanical, especially at the back half of their careers? In FHM8, once you got those first monthly development reports that show minuses in some areas for a player, it was only going to get more and more severe from now on and you're better of trading him before his value tanks too much. Or is there more difference between different players in how steeply they decline out of their prime years. * Has the development curve been diversified? Physical attributes such as acceleration might well start their decline around age 25 for a modern pro athlete whereas I'm not sure something like temperament or offensive read declines ever, really. * Do teams have more nuanced trade needs in discussions? Something like "we need a 1st line winger" or "we need depth at wing" as different needs. * When playing in AHL/ECHL, does your roster get automatically sorted every time your parent club sends down or recalls a player - up to putting your current players to the IR with it's 18 day minimum duration? Very frustrating. * Is it possible to select multiple rows in a list and perform the same action to all of them. Removing players one by one from shortlist is annoying, especially if its sorting still resets after each action. |
