This is how I feel. I'm like Mike Golic. Why change the rules from the way the game was being played earlier? In the playoffs, just play a regular quarter & keep playing til someone is ahead @ 00:00. I'm all for ties in the regular season.

I have no problemwith Shannahan's decision to take the ball in OT after playing four really tough physical quarters. Put their defense on the field with less rest give your defense more rest.
Also , you're playing to win go down the field and score and stop them one time game over , didn't happen that way because ....

it's Mahomes, already better than Brady ever was IMHO.

I'd prefer it stay the way it is, each team gets a fair opportunity with the team winning the toss having the advantage of deferring (no idea how SF didn't get this right) and becoming the team that knows what it needs to do. I think the NFL has this right, it's a fair way to end the game in a reasonable amount of time.

The trouble with a "normal" clock is the players are absolutely gassed. The issue of player safety along with play becoming so sloppy due to fatigue it could ruin the outcome of, what up to that point was, a well played game is why the game needs to be played out as quickly and fairly as possible IMHO. Sure they could come up with a different method that I might like better, but a full set clock, again IMHO, isn't the answer.

It's not what I would have done, but resting the defense is a fair point in Shanahan's favor.

They said the didn't know the rule going in. They (at least some players said) only found out reading it as it was posted on the scoreboard.

This is all on the coaches, not the players. Kansas City players said that they discussed exactly what they would do in OT at the Super Bowl..and they discussed it BEFORE the season even started.

In reality though how does a team not cover this? Sure, I guess the coaching staff knows and can plan for it (though I wonder about the coaches too since SF seems to have dropped the ball on this by electing to receive), but knowing going in compared to finding out in the moment? Unnecessary distraction.. shouldn't happen. Bad look for Shanahan and his staff.
I don't think the new OT rules played any role in this game. The coach has to know the rules.

From snap to whistle, do you know how many minutes they actually play the game? Around 11 minutes of running around. The rest of the 3 hours they're either standing, in the huddle, at the line, what have you.

Save for baseball, football is by far the easiest sport to play and not get gassed. Sure, I've seen people get tired playing football in my day, but I'd have to question their conditioning.

Still doesn't explain why they would think they won with a FG on the 1st possession of OT. If they didn't know the new rules, they new the old ones, and would know scoring a FG on 1st possession in OT doesn't win the game.

This game was extra entertaining and I'm not sure why. We've had other close SBs in recent history. This game was great. Even my wife was dialed in.

This would be the best way to do it to avoid gimmicks. Play the full 15 minutes. No one has an advantage. If it's tied by the end of the 1st quarter, next score wins. This way the entire OT is played like the rest of the game.

How often are soccer players going full blast? That is far less taxing. You're not lugging around 10 pounds of equipment while getting pounded by 275lb of muscle coming at you in 4.6/40 speed.

I do want to turn this into European football vs American football

But the average EPL midfielders will run 9-12km per match which is 90 minutes.

But they have completely different body types than do NFL players.
Long lean muscle vs bulk

It is very rare to see a soccer player outside of the largest center backs and goalkeepers be over 190 lbs regularly

The Nickelodeon broadcast was actually really good. My kids are a bit too old for a lot of it, but they watched it today and actually enjoyed it.

You're right, I got ahead of myself thinking of the possibility.

I just get annoyed when people try to say one team sport is more physically fit than the other. From what I see, you can't get paid to play sports & not be at tip top shape. They may train more specifically certain areas of fitness, but if you crossed any pro into another sport, they would be sucking wind 5 minutes in. That's why when you hear of players coming back from injury, they say they have to get into "game shape". Cause playing it is an extra level you cant get in the gym.

Yes, all on the SF coaches. Never said anything different. The context of the post you quoted, in regard to "the players", was about the Niner's players. Had nothing to do with KC.

I've been winded playing soccer. I've been winded playing tennis. Never in baseball or football. If you do make a long run, you have more than enough time to recover. So yeah, I think in both of those sports you can get paid to not be in top physical condition. Because the sport allows it.

Going by some of the comments coming from Cowboys players, they basically told you they weren't in top physical condition.

As described in Wetzel's article - https://sports.yahoo.com/how-kyle-sh...160726090.html - Shanahan had a reason for wanting the ball first - and it wasn't because of a tired defense or misunderstanding the new OT rules: He wanted the ball third to go for the sudden death win in case both teams did the same thing - punt, FG, or TD - on their opening possessions.

Is it fair to criticize going for an advantage that is far from guaranteed to happen? Probably. But it's also fair to point out that had that not unlikely scenario unfolded and SF had gone on to win by scoring on that 3rd possession, Shanahan would've surely been hailed for making a gutsy call...

And giving the ball to Mahomes first and, potentially, third evokes - under the new OT rules - memories of the Chiefs/Bills shootout a few years ago, where Mahomes getting the ball 3rd yesterday would be like him getting the ball first in that game against the Bills... In that scenario, Shanahan would be open to the criticism of that choice if the OT had played out as KC TD, 9er TD, KC TD: "Shanahan's OT Blunder - Giving Mahomes the Ball Twice."

I don't compare what I do playing HS & rec leagues to what PROFESSIONAL athletes do. It's different.

And what Lawrence said about being burned out was a poor excuse, not reality. Whether he was talking about physically or mentally.

Having said that, I could twist it & say their being "burned out" was a result of playing & practicing for 5 months a grueling game.

I can just say from my experience, I've been on the sidelines for college football, the baseline for NBA basketball, at the glass for the NHL & the bleachers for the MLB. And each time I was blown away at the speed and physicality and coordination & quick thinking it took to be at that level. And I imagine I would think the same about soccer players if I got to see the World Cup or something up close. There is no way on earth I would ever say either sport wasn't physically taxing.

Yeah, and I also know the training rooms are filled with players that have had a physical toll taken on their bodies from those 11 minutes.

I'm going to guess you never played in the NFL?

So what were your thoughts when McCaffrey checked himself out of the game? "Pussy"? You know, checked himself out, like Cowboy players, as well as all other team's RB's and WR do? What about teams that rotate out their best d-linemen because those few seconds of contact while rushing the passer are just too much? Shouldn't they just go back to the huddle, get their rest there, and be ready to keep playing? You think with their paychecks they would just stay in shape.

You're saying Cowboy players have commented on the conditioning of the players in the Super Bowl? Who the hell on the Cowboys is in a position to comment on Niner or Chiefs players? All the Cowboys know is how to play the regular season and then get their ass handed to them in game one of the playoffs, if they make the playoffs. Now, IF they ever get to play those extra three to four post season games I might listen to what they have to say. Until then? Nah.
