Historical League Start Years?

I've always been a modern day player and never tried starting a historical league game, but want to take the plunge.

What year or years do people recommend me starting in? And what teams in those years do people recommend being? I like a challenge, I'm currently doing a Blue Jackets game in my modern day save.

Do people have any recommended league settings to use as well for a historical game?

The 1967 expansion is pretty fun year to start you have 6 expansion teams to choose from. I just started a game with the North Stars

Looking for a real challenge could try the awful 1974 Washington Capitals

When did you become a hockey fan?

That's always a good place to start. Tracing a players career years can be fun too...and you could almost do it in chunks, like start in the 90s, go back to the 80s, then 70s, etc.

If you want some randomness to it, start a Random Debut game in '67 or 79.

I got into hockey when NHL 99 came out back on the Playstation with that great Avs team, that and the Mighty Ducks becoming popular here in the UK.

With the North Stars, will they still move to Dallas in 1993?

I watched that ESPN+ documentary 'Unrivaled' about the Avs and Red Wings rivalry in the 90's, that helped me choose my first historical start. Then I did a Blue Jackets from their inception (much like last years historical stream) as that's my team.

This is great advice!

Random debut is also fun, especially if you are a history person. I love seeing who the players really were. It has helped me fill out my hockey history knowledge.

ADAM: Question, does Random Debut matter in terms of what year you start and what era the random players are pulled from?

You will not get any players that already retired before your start year.

Interesting! I'd wondered but was never sure how it worked. Thanks!

Just to clarify slightly: the game randomizes the career years of every historical player, so the ones who start retired will be the ones whose randomized end date is before the start of the game - the starting group of players can still include players who retired before that year in real life.
