I wonder what the Snakes will do with Gallen after six dominant, no-hit innings, now that they must be at the point where their stupid playbook tells them to bring in one of their lousy left-handers or something.

This is why I don't like ending the shift. Professionals have got to have the skill to take the obvious easy hits.

Arizona Diamondbacks probably just lost the World Series because their manager wanted to let his pitcher go 7+ innings. Hope it was worth it for their fanbase that at least they got to see a "real" SP go out there and not have analytics ruin the night by bringing in a more effective relief option when their SP was very clearly gassed for 2+ innings and getting rocked.

Nobody:

Like, really, nobody:

Backs getting shutout has nothing to do with it, huh?

Amazing the timing of Simien. Couldn't do crap until Garcia got hurt.

In about five minutes, baseball is over for the year.

Yes, because teams often win games in which they don't score

Stayed one inning "too late", gave up 1. Put in the bullpen that was "supposed" to be there earlier & they gave up 4.

But yeah, if they came in in the 7th, that would have made all the difference.

This is what I mean when I say analytics have taken a lot of the fun out of baseball. I liked it better when the calculators didn't tell human beings & athletes what to do.

They don't tell anyone what to do, they just tell the what the odds are of various choices, and the humans made the decision.

Remember the old saying: the race is not always to the swiftest nor the fight to the strongest, but that's the way to bet.

A fitting end to a largely drama-less and boring postseason: While we were all set for the excitement of the D-backs down just 1-0 in the bottom of the ninth and batting for the their survival, that script was jettisoned in the top of the ninth by the game turning into a blowout.

If pressed to come up with a memorable moment from this postseason, I'd probably have to choose Garcia getting drilled by Abreau, and it's immediate aftermath. But in a year or two, I will have forgotten about that...

Silver lining? At least the BlackStros didn't win. Neither did the Giants, Yankees, or Phillies. Or Mets (as if). Could have been worse.

A team had never won a world series won one. For me that's a victory for the underdogs and reason for celebration.

Corey Seager: .292 career average, 170 HR's, 2 World Series MVP's, one of only 2 players to win a world series MVP with 2 different teams, Rookie of the Year, NLCS MVP, above average defense. He has to be on a hall of fame track, right?

I know it is still a man's decision. But too many fans & media "experts" don't seem to think so. Too many fans & critics think decisions should be made based solely on what the computer says. And the result is a bunch of unnecessary 2nd guessing & Monday quarterbacking. The math is a tool. It is not a Bible. It is not an instruction book. It is not a boss.

The game does not go by the book. Last night was the perfect example. People want to criticize leaving Gallen in for the 7th? How about the fact Eovaldi faced more batters than he did? I thought the reasoning behind taking out the pitcher was for no none to face him more than twice? Eovaldi faced 27 hittters to Gallen's 23. So did Bochy make a bad decision letting him continue? And what was the 1st hit Gallen gave up? A cue ball single away from the shift that would have been an easy play for a normally positioned 3B. But do I hear any 2nd guessing of the math on that one? Or do we just recognize Seagar is super hot & clutch & even his "mistakes" turn out right?

The "calculator" doesn't always know what it is talking about. And I wish, I have no control over it, but I wish baseball watchers would stop using it to 2nd guess everything. And baseball managers stop using it to absolve themselves any guilt for any decisions. "Well the stats say that was the way to go". That's the coward's way, not a leader's way. Know your team, know your opponent, train your gut.

This is another reason why the media is to blame for baseball's regression in the mind of the sports fan. They've taken the fun out of talking the game. God, I long for the days where I didn't hear some over-educated pretty face telling us, "Well, he has a .400 batting average in situations like this," when the imbecile should know that being 2 for 5 career statistically means nothing long term. Give me Ernie Harwell...or Vin Scully...or any of those guys who could tell me something INTERESTING about a player because they KNEW THEM. It helped make the players come alive for us all.

He has my vote for AL MVP as well. Though I'm sure the media engraved Ohtani's name on it back in June. He should reach 300 career HR's and there are not many SS's that can claim his awards over his career. So if he reasonably maintains, I can see Cooperstown as his final stop.
