Messing around with Free Agency & Compensation

Wondering how people update this from the default. Something I've thought about trying is going to 3 years until a player hits free agency (no arb), but with the A/B system of comp, so the team gets rewarded with more draft picks. Not sure if/how this would work, but interested to hear how everyone else has tried making updates

As a reference, here is how the real-life free agent ranking and compensation systems have worked since the start of free agency:

1976

A re-entry draft was held in November, with teams selecting the free agents with whom they wished to negotiate. A given player could be selected by no more than half the teams in MLB (12 in 1976, and 13 starting in 1977). Compensation consisted of a draft pick from the signing team. Free agents were ranked by the number of clubs which had selected them. In the case of a tie, the player selected first by that number of clubs was ranked higher.

1981

Free agents were now ranked by their statistical performance. A re-entry draft was still used to determine which teams could negotiate with which players, but there was no longer a limit on how many clubs could select a player.

Type A: top 20%
Type B: 21% to 30%
Unranked: 31% and below

Type A: professional player from compensation pool and draft pick from the signing team
Type B: draft pick from the signing team and special draft pick between the first and second rounds
Unranked (if selected by four or more clubs): draft pick (not certain of the exact type)
Unranked (if selected by three or fewer clubs): no compensation

1985

The re-entry draft was abolished and clubs were free to negotiate with any free agent in whom they had interest.

Type A: top 30%
Type B: 31% to 50%
Type C: 51% to 60%
Unranked: 61% and below

Type A: draft pick from the signing team and special draft pick between the first and second rounds
Type B: draft pick from the signing team
Type C: special draft pick between the second and third rounds
Unranked: no compensation

2007

Type A: top 20%
Type B: 21% to 40%
Unranked: 41% and below

Type A: draft pick from the signing team and special draft pick between the first and second rounds

2012

The free agent system received a major overhaul. The statistical ranking of free agents was abolished, and compensation lowered.

Compensation for a lost free agent consisted of a special draft pick at end of first round. The signing club forfeited its highest available selection in draft, excluding picks in the top 10 of the first round. A free agent was eligible for compensation only if he was with his former club for entire season, and was offered a "qualifying offer" of a one-year contract worth a salary at least equal to the average of the 125 highest salaries as of August 31st of the just concluded season.

2017

Compensation for a lost free agent now consisted of a special draft pick at end of the Competitive Balance B round, unless the club was revenue sharing recipient and the free agent signed a contract for $50 million or more, in which case compensation was a special draft pick at the end of the first round. If the club was a luxury tax payor, then it received a special pick at the end of the fourth round.

If the signing club received revenue sharing, it forfeited its third-highest available selection in the draft. If the signing club was a luxury tax payor, it forfeited its second-highest and fifth-highest selections in the draft. All other clubs forfeited its second-highest selection in draft.

A free agent was eligible for compensation only if with the former club for entire season, and was offered a "qualifying offer" consisting of a one-year contract worth a salary at least equal to the average of the 125 highest salaries as of August 31st of the just concluded season.
