We stay in the same general southeast vicinity for the endpoint of this Saturday whistle-stop tour, with the Marauders out of Marion NC. This club existed briefly in the years just after WW2, featuring in the Western Carolina and Tar Heel Leagues. They were an affiliate of Baltimore's in their final 1954 season.

We head what is from memory for the first time to the Garden State as I have a crack at the Troopers out of Bloomingdale. Theirs was a very fleeting existence indeed, lasting from just 1946 thru '48 playing in the North Atlantic League. They were an affiliate of the Braves in '47 and the Tribe in their title-winning 1948 season.

There's some tragedy associated with this club's nomenclature, with the "Troopers" name being in honour of the original owner's son, who was a New Jersey State Police officer killed in the line of duty. Apparently Babe Ruth went to one of their games in 1947 as a spectator, then hit some BP for the 1600-odd in attendance after the game.

Now for another "Stars" club that I needed to do to fill a hole in one of my saves, those out of Phoenix AZ. Perhaps more widely known through the "Senators" appellation, this club existed off-and-on from 1915 thru 1957 and played in numerous leagues over that time. An Orioles affiliate for a short while right at the end of its tenure, they were replaced in 1958 by the AAA Giants.

And with the sun just setting here on a beautiful spring day in Sydney, Australia, how appropriate that we next visit the Beachcombers out of Long Beach CA. Too many other activities in which to partake of in this region it seems, with this club lasting just two seasons: 1910 in the Trolley League and then again in the 1913 Southern Cal League, with onetime MLBers Jesse Stovall and "Bull" Durham sharing managerial duties in the latter.

Next stop, the Mountaineers out of Hazleton PA, who had a nice, long and nearly unbroken stretch from 1928 thru 1950. The Mountaineers moniker was the most-used over that time, and even went on to be used subsequent to the demise of the baseball club by the city's CBA team. Jim Bagby, jr is counted among the club's alumni.

While we're in Pennsylvania, let's trudge across to the north-westernmost part of the state and tackle the Sailors out of Erie. This club in its many and various incarnations spans the years 1905-94, featuring in more than a dozen different leagues and engaging in many affiliations over that time. The most recognisable and long-lasting version of the club was the Short A season one that ran from 1964-93.

Charles Bender is arguably their most famous alum, but the list is long and filled with quality players such as Bernard Gilkey, Dick McAuliffe, Todd Zeile and Bobby Tolan.

We jag in a slight southwesterly direction now for a look at the Cobblers out of Portsmouth OH. The Cobblers - rare for these clubs - existed in a single clump of years, in this case 1908-15 when they were members of the Ohio State League, and used just the one moniker, representative of the city's extensive shoe industry at the time.

Future HOFer Billy Southworth was at the club in 1912 and 1913, and other alumni include the brilliantly-nicknamed Pickles Dillhoefer and Sad Sam Jones.
