For some reason I found this one very easy.

Rarity 10. I thought Hampton would be a more rare cheeky answer than it turned out to be.

No, Manny Trillo would be too obvious, he said. Go with Johnny Callison, he said. Dope.

Clearly, I enjoy sucking at this game, as I do it so well.
Saturday, I had ONE team-match (my specialty, right?) to get, and screwed up. The annoying thing is that an excellent answer leapt into my head, but too late. 135 Today I bang through the teams and then come the bleeping GGs. Good golly, Mr. Molly. You won no GGs. Feh. Waste of some nice Giants. (0.96 cume.) 115.

Back where I belong. Rarity of 7, 6 of it for the Mariners (sigh).
Horton was a redemption for my using Rico Carty in an M's grid by mistake a few weeks back, but I guess Detroit made him too obvious. I wasn't as certain about my alternate, though. And with Paciorek, I had an alternative I was 98% sure of. (And rightly so, checking shows.) But after missing all those previous grids, I couldn't even risk a 2% chance of not completing this one, so I went for Wimpy. "Failure makes cowards of us all." Well, better next time, I guess.) |

How to finish in the stink hole: Chose Ray Grimes as your 100 RBI Cub when he had 99.

So I'm cruising along, and then there are two spots left. I decide to take an Obvious Answer Penalty for Ubaldo (if Neifi Perez or Preston Wilson got an All-Star slot, my bad) and then I thought and thought, trying to recall if Chuck Hinton ever got 30 sacks (nope, high of 28) or any NewSen I was missing.
Finally I said screw it, I'll take the penalty for Ruben Sierra (traded for a 40/40 guy and Ruben was faster) and just move on. Fedge. 108. (Ruben's best year was only worth 25 SB. And he was in Oakland by then.) Meanwhile the Brad Corbett-era Rangers were running all over the place. There's the guy who stole his way around the bases (51 and 43 SB in consecutive seasons), there's the Met I should never forget (only 30, but that gets it done) and considering that I did a 1980 Rangers game, I could have remembered that Bump Wills did back-to-back 30 SB years. I mean, consider his DNA. Sigh. (And don't get me started on those two Yankees a few years later. Didn't know one of them even got on base that often.) |

Rarity 15.
Two beautiful columns and then the saves… Well, at least I didn't completely panic and go for Percival, Hoffman and Goose. (Especially as Goose never had more than 33 in a season, even though he led the AL 3 times.) |

Rarity 4. Surprised that DeLeon and Pascual were rarer answers than Waddell.

So as usual, when I see Brewers, I light up because I think Pilots. I zip down the column, see Twins, think "Cool, Senators!" and then of course select John Kennedy, who is from the wrong set of Senators. Game over.
(It's particularly annoying because I have two actual TwinPilots I'd been wanting to use, and that's not even counting Minch.) So I do the As for pride (although I'm too annoyed to think of Philly or KC, I simply chose East Bay As…but I can live with a 0.75 cume for the column), and then I have no idea about the Ks, and just go for whimsy. Whim some, lose 3. Yes, I could have played safe with Gibby, Cakes and Barney, but why bother. Score is 402, I guess. |
