Player of the Game vs. Performance of the Day
I've long called for OOTP to track POTG stats, to no avail. So, I did it myself this year.
![]() Turns out POTG stats are crapola as they almost always are for one of the starting pitchers, regardless of if they win, lose or even have a quality start with only two of the top twenty being batters (Ohtani wasn't used much as a batter by the AI). FWIW, here's my top 20 Player of the Game winners (1 point per being named POTG with a total of 528 different players being ranked): PLAYER OF THE GAME 1 Clevlenger, M. 21 2 Wood, Joe 17 3 DeGrom, J. 16 4 Darvish, Y. 15 5 Martinez, Pedro 15 6 McCormick, Jim 15 7 Porcello, R. 15 8 Ryan, N. 15 9 Sanchez, Ana. 15 10 Scherzer, Max 15 Chesboro, J. 14 Manaea, S. 14 Moore, Matt 14 Ohtani, S. 14 15 Richard, J.R. 14 Cabrera, M. 13 Cole, G. 13 Dierker, L. 13 Harvey, M. 13 20 Johnson, R. 13 Soroka, M. 13 Thome, J 13 Williams, Ted 13 OTOH, Performance of the Day seems to be pretty balanced and a much better indicator of which players made the most impact throughout the season. Here are my top 20 POTD rankings with three points awarded for 1st, two for 2nd and one for 3rd and a total of 263 players being ranked: PERFORMANCE OF THE DAY RANKINGS 1 Williams, Ted 18 2 DeGrom, J. 16 3 Wood, Joe 14 4 Ryan, N. 12 5 Bryant, K. 11 6 Clevlinger, M. 11 7 Sano, M. 11 8 Swindell, G. 11 9 Trout, M. 11 10 Campanella, R. 10 Alvarez, Y. 9 Cabrera, M. 9 Bonds, Ba. 8 Cash, N. 8 15 Gibson, J. 8 Marshall, Mike 8 Rodriguez, Alex 8 Ruth, Babe 8 Story, T. 8 20 Thome, J. 8 Youngs, R. 8 In short, I'm not sure why the POTG leans so heavily towards pitchers but when it comes to POTD, the AI seems to make much more reasonable choices. One final interesting note, Galveston ace Matt Harvey led the N.L. with a 2.03 ERA but didn't get even one point in the POTD rankings but was named POTG 13 times.
