Unlike football position players in baseball are involved in the same activity, fielding and hitting, although the amount of fielding they do varies.

So we have two players with equal runs created who play different positions. One plays a position that has twice as many fielding chances as the other. For an equal comparison it is necessary to decide the difference in runs caused by their fielding situation and apply that to runs created as an adjustment.

WAR does this by looking at the offense generated at the position by the players managers decided to play at the positions. The managers decision was based on anecdotal observations. Considering the number of times manger's decisions on anecdotal observations have been proven wrong there is little reason to believe they got this decision right. And that is the foundation of WAR.

I'm OK with WAR comparing players of he same position because the basic fielding adjustment is the same even if it's wrong and I have some confidence in the calculations for runs save above or below average. I have little confidence in WAR involving players playing widely different fielding positions.

Nope.

I mean, if you're using one form of WAR to compare players at the same position and a different form of WAR to compare players at different positions that just seems like a lot of overlap, but sure?

We've both stated our positions several times and I'm sure the groupers have by now made up their minds. I recently stated in another thread my view is that the purpose of a debate isn't to convince the other person. It's to convince the audience.
