Why is Ohtani so bad?!
He's the best player in MLB and a 100 rating in OOTP, but you really cant use him at all. I've looked over dozens of Ohtani card stats and never see him performing well, except at the lower levels. I couldn't use him hitting or pitching above Silver level.
He's the best player of our time, he should be rated accordingly! |

The basic idea behind any successful video game is to keep them playing and keep them coming back. Lots of (more) Historical missions allow the cycle to extend beyond the World Series and through the winter months, until it's time for a new season and new version of the game and Perfect Team. Keep them playing, keep them coming back. Yes, there's less interest in PT after baseball is done for the year, but there'd be even less if missions were primarily focused on Live player performance. It'd just be an exercise in collecting your points and running the same guys out there week after week. Look at it this way. Live cards are the seed corn of the game. They link directly to the current product on the field, but their primary use (after the Live missions that start every cycle) is to provide points through pack pulls and sales. This is why there are price floors, which are primarily there to keep Live card prices from tanking after most players have completed the initial set of Live missions (the devs can correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think I am). |

I think the other commenters have done a good job explaining why Live Cards are supposed to be bad and that Ohtani's ratings are a reflection of that.
However, I'd like to note that while Ohtani's batting ratings are right in line with other Perfect position players, his pitching ratings are brutal and way under represent his ability even in Live-only settings. His shape/distribution isn't too bad since pBABIP tends to play up, but his ratings total are comparable to a high bronze Live card. Even in cap settings where two way players excel, I tend to play him near the bottom of my rotation or in relief. Not sure if this is done for balance reasons or what, but it is weird to see and I think his card has been like this in previous iterations as well. |

I'm just saying for an unprecedented but short career, he sucks in this game and it's a shame.

I'll bet you he gets a historical card at some point this year and it'll be a destroyer of worlds. It's what happened last year.
