No this isn't a physics based game. exit velocity is just a number.

People asked for it and the dev put it in the game.

I don't think it's meaningful IRL. "Wow, that ball had an exit velocity of 105.5 mph!" So long as it goes out of the park, I couldn't care less what the EV is.

It's probably the most meaningful number there is IRL for hitters, which I assume is why there are questions as to its meaning in OOTP.

Cause it's not a physics based game. What happens during a game is determined by League Totals, player ratings and a whole bunch of other stuff.

There is no physics in the game so the speed of the balls are just numbers used in calculations.

Now that being said exit velocity MAY be included in the calculations in a hit and every outcome from a hit.

Not to get off on a side topic here, but high EV off the bat means less reaction time for the defenders, therefore limiting the amount of range that they can cover in that shorter time until the ball gets to wherever it's going.

Regarding OOTP, I personally could care less if EV is mentioned or not since it has no real bearing within the game. But IRL, it's a very important stat.

This is my question.

and in RL as a stat it's not really important, it's really just a data point attached or derived from what anybody watching would deduce very quickly. "he's hitting the ball well" and "getting good wood on it" may not appear in AVG or SLG but they are potential indicators. not everything in the game can be nor needs to become data before it becomes something tangible.

HOWEVER, in a baseball simulator, EV DOES obviously become quite useful, potentially. but as outs|der has explained, ev will not be useful in a ratings-based engine (well, I suppose it could be coded in but why bother).

I would fully disagree with you on this, but to each his own.

To your point, yeah watching a game live it's very easy to see when a guy squares one up. And yeah, Aaron Judge hits the ball hard, no duh. We can quickly see that.... But from a scouting perspective and from a fans perspective being able to say so-n-so has an average EV of 93.1 is a lot more tangible than saying "he usually puts good wood on it."

If I hear some minor league prospect has an EV of 93.8 over the course of the season and I can take that concrete number and compare it to the concrete number of others (see link below) and see how that would rank in the top 10 of MLB hitters, all of who have really good pop, it makes me feel a heck of a lot better than the alternate of someone simply saying, "he seems to really be squaring the ball up quite a bit" which obviously leaves a lot more room for interpretation.

how? when it saying it verbally through basic observation is so much more efficient and effective, in whole and in part, than thinking he has his spreadsheet formulas so dialed in? So I call up someone in the farm system ask a question and am told "ya, he's hitting it good" vs looking at my spreadsheet? Ok, I get ya. Saves making a phone call. And likely anything else that phone call can provide is also already there on the spreadsheet. (bad computer day today!)

It's not even meaningful in the real life game.

Exit velocity is just a made up number by a bunch of nerds that scammed their way into baseball front offices and are just trying to add speedometers to everything to keep their jobs. The only stats that actually matter are batting average (this is why Derek Jeter is one of the best of all time, dude could probably still hit .300 today), RBI (this is why Derek Jeter is one of the most overrated players to ever play, almost 3500 career hits and only ONE season with 100 ribbies?!) and fielding errors (this is why Derek Jeter is one of the best of all time, the second half of his career he was basically a lock for single digit errors. his five career gold gloves prove his excellence).

Very well done.

Nothing beats looking at the batting average and RBI league leaders in the sports section of the newspaper. And lemme tell ya, that Gus Triandos has really been putting some good wood on it lately.

Exit velocity means absolutely nothing in OOTP…stats in general in OOTP mean very little. This is a ratings based game/engine, and outside the variances for scouting error or just luck, the ratings will drive the “body of work” when it comes to a players career performance. Now it’s true those ratings may change for any number of reasons no, but the results are still driven from ratings.

This is the reason I recommend an AI evaluation of 70/15/10/5

The game is not nearly complex as many try to make it out to be. Just get the best rated players you can, and start them over the long haul. The body of work should reflect those ratings plus or minus a little depends ng on scouting.
