Thinking of sticking with Hidalgo, the CF def drop from 98 to 82 is the deal breaker. Any thoughts?

Have you got Betts yet? You can complete the Topps 1 mission to get Betts and a diamond pack. Using buy orders, you should complete this for less than 20K and earn a free diamond pack. I found it cheaper to buy 3 diamonds rather than chase all the golds and silvers, but the market may have changed.

In general, I would not pay to swap one meh card out for another.

I own both cards. Deciding who to start.

I'd say closer to 25K to complete that mission (at L10 prices it would be just shy of 30K), but sell the Trout card and you're almost there. Mookie is head and shoulders better than Trout and Hidalgo (keep Hidalgo, though, because he makes it easy to finish the Carlos Beltran BAL mission).

Hidalgo because of the defense.

I put Trout in LF, his LF defense is slowly growing.

It takes about 3 weeks to fully train a player. I can't imagine hanging onto live perfect cards through an update and risk losing 16000 points of value.
Unless, you've locked the card by completing some silly mission such as AL All-Stars.

Well, his card won't be changing this time because he's been out with a hamate injury. Has Mike Trout ever dropped to less than 100, though? He's the one constant in an ever-changing card universe.

Redsixerfan might also be one of those people who only sells duplicates. As far as it goes, Trout in left is acceptable depending on league level.

Nope, I just completed this mission after posting buy orders right after I read this post. So, 2 days and the total cost was ~19,500. The key is to go after 3 diamonds: so Strasbourg 6K, Arenado 6K and Braun 7K AND Tramell 6K + Glavine 200 points. If I would have gotten all 4, I would have sold 1 for a small profit. Getting it done in 2 days was a bit lucky; I was expecting it to take a week.

Side note: when this mission first dropped, I sold two of these diamonds for 20K EACH. This is why the team that starts now can catch up easily and surpass those early teams who have squandered all their points by now and are stuck.

His card could also improve, making the time I put in to train him in LF even more worth it.

Mookie Betts is already better than this card could ever be and Trout is having the worst season of his career. But, what do I know? I didn't even know Trout was hurt and saves your card from going down. I do know I'd rather have Betts and a free diamond pack than a 100 live Trout alone.

My observations:

Piersall will never hit much. He is the rare example of a defensive wiz whose bat still keeps him out of the lineup. Nonetheless, he's a useful piece as defensive sub, pinch runner, and occasional pinch hitter v. left.

Hidalgo will hit well enough to play at lower levels but becomes semi-worthless with the bat as your team advances because of his avoid K rating. He's the better choice if you're still below Gold level because his defense will be above average and he'll hit some. As you move up, he becomes another weak hitter with slightly worse defense than Piersall.

Overall, Hidalgo is better, but they're both weak Perfect cards (which is common for cards released early in the yearly cycle, as these were).

If I turn up Piersall bunt for hit, will that help at all?

I've had Piersall on some Diamond teams as a utility guy, sometimes as centerfielder v. lefties, although he's mostly banished to the reserve roster now. I always cranked up the bunt for hit, and it seemed to help, although his best performance at that level would be a .260 average with no power and not many walks. Since he has no power, what are you losing by trying to bunt your way on?
