Why you should care about the Live Updates
I'm 100% F2P this year, not running any tourneys, no twitch packs, nothing.
And I was able to do this with the live update. There are three more golds that cut off at the bottom of the image - McCutchen, Hays and somebody else. If the cutoff date had been July 9th instead of July 5th, as I was expecting, Murphy, Betts and Munoz all would have gone to 100 and I'd have another 600K - and it would have been a truly excellent update. Obviously, I missed out on Gerrit Cole and never got 10 of Bautista; disappointed about that. Otherwise, nailed every other Diamond/Perfect. If I can do this as a F2P player who doesn't do anything extra, anyone can. And when it's worth a million PP, you can't tell me it's not worth it!

I got myself 10 Fernando Tatis for about 4,600 PP apiece over the last few weeks (unfortunately the supply didn't last for my other two teams) and cashed in 180,000 PP for my 9 duplicates.
I, too, keep (or add) certain cards I expect to become gold or diamond or even perfect - you can gain lots of PP by simply paying attention

I ran up close to 400,000 points, and it would've been better if Mookie and Murphy had gone Perfect.

Well done! Hold onto those Mookie's and Murphy's for now! Clearly, it's a long way until the next update, but it's always good to try to get 10 of the top diamonds really early for 4500 each (buy orders) - they definitely fill with this much time. Juan Soto, Mookie, Murphy, Gausman, Alvarez, Munoz. Those are the six I'd try to get early, and then of course sell and replace later if they fall off.

I'm holding onto Mookie and Murphy. Sold my lone Soto for 8200 early Monday morning because I figure I can get it back for no more than that later.

Any tips for a new guy that is trying to get an idea for how the ratings for live updates work?

For batters, it's mostly OPS / OPS+ Check BaseballReference game logs section of a players' stats. The last update cut-off for stats was July 5th. So if they had a .804 OPS on July 5th, and have an .843 OPS now, they are likely going to go up on the next update. There's a bit more to it than this, but it should be enough to have success. You can purchase a max of 10 cards for any individual player, then you have to pull from packs to get more than 10. Last edited by PunishedF2P; 07-27-2023 at 06:47 PM. |

All in on Mookie. No final-week slump and two more points, please.

Definitely; I've been holding 10 Mookie since the last update.
Tucker seems likely to go at the moment, IMO. He's a 95 OVR and he's gone from .845 to .889 after tonight. I'd consider grabbing him (I already have). Also, keep an eye on Yordon Alvarez. Finally back from injury, he's gone from .978 to .997 in a few games, and if he has a good week he'll definitely go to 100. |

Where did you get your initial FP to buy that many of each though ? If no buying you must have been lucky in Live or league to generate enough FP just from those sources. I’m F2P and take forever as I get about 250-280FP from live and league varies if been in it before or pro/Rel but can go through some dry spells only get maybe 100 FP a day . Nice to see more non pay 2 win guys

Another thing to think about this coming week: check to make sure you aren't holding saleable cards that will go DOWN. Sucks to have extra Diamonds that dropped to Gold and lost you 3000 points.

Tick tick tick. Two teams in the World Series and I'm 9 hours in the future, waiting for the league and player card updates.

It's interesting. They decided to go a completely different route with the update this time - which is okay, but I do think we should have been warned - and I'm also wondering whether next update will return to reflecting the statistics of players on the field, or if we will get another random roulette update?
![]() Look, I still got about 700K from it, but it just makes no sense, lmao. I was playing for the live updates this year, so this 'pick players and randomly change their numbers down 1 after they went up 40 OPS points' update was sort of a buzz kill. I'm calling it in a wrap for 24. See you guys in PT25! |

Yeah, Nootbar had a .993 OPS over the last period and went up 4. Greene, Naylor and Duran had a lower OPS and went up 6-7.
The worst may be Matt Olson who had an OPS of 1.173 in the period and just goes up 1. While guys like McCormick (8), Bellinger (10), Lowe (7) and Kim (8) shot up almost double digits with a much lower OPS. Last edited by Arlie Rahn; 08-07-2023 at 04:28 PM. |

Looking it over. 1.1 million points incoming between my five teams at quick-sell rates. And yet...
I'm now convinced that Mookie Betts doesn't go Perfect unless Acuna and Judge die in a plane crash this month. Dude is sitting on 98 and slashes .338/.440/.675 to raise his OPS from .923 to .960, is beating his already outstanding ZiPS projection by 64 points, has a wOBA of .405 (beats ZiPS by 25 points and is fourth in the majors), fourth in the majors in WAR, fifth in OPS, fifth in Slugging, fifth in walks. On and on it goes, and another one-point bump for a guy who started at 97 and has exceeded his projections everywhere. Kyle Tucker's .325/.414/.639 is good for a drop from 96 to 94. Cody Bellinger is player of the month, OPS of 1.136, is now ninth in Slugging, eighth in OPS, and stops just short of 90. How many Diamond players have worse stats than he does? His 3.6 Fangraphs WAR puts him in the top 20, so there are quite a few. Manny Machado's .941 July OPS would be good for eighth-best in the majors this season. He drops by one point instead of returning to Diamond. Austin Riley (1.073 OPS, doesn't return to Diamond), Isaac Paredes (.930 OPS, 28th in Fangraphs WAR and can't crack Gold). Etc. Lest someone bring up defense, how about Ha-seong KIm, whose glove is as golden as it gets. 1.131 OPS in July, 11th in Fangraphs WAR for the season, and he's not as good as Altuve and Marte, both of whom trail him badly in friggin' oWAR and whose gloves have the golden weight of a Maltese Falcon but are actually made of lead. And Perfect Luis Arraez barely beats him in oWAR while playing what would charitably be described as sub-optimal defense. This system of ratings could best be described as fiddle and fudge. Since the beginning, many have stated the "Overall Rating" doesn't mean much, and these observations prove it. I can't help but conclude the so-called "randomness" is purposeful to insure getting a roster of all Perfects simply won't guarantee you anything.
If the Overall ratings are not really accurate, then any system to raise or lower them is going to be faulted too. Add to that the randomness of a baseball game anyway - when a Perfect card will go 0-4 while an "75" will go 4-4 with 2 Homeruns, and it all becomes a crapshoot - exactly what the Devs want it to be. |
