world_default.xml - gender field
I notice in world_default.xml file that each nation has a gender. That seems a little odd, but I'm guessing it's an artifact put in place for some possible future feature or for something that was abandoned. However, I thought I would ask if anyone knows whether it currently does something if it is set to a value other than zero.
I ask because—ignoring the problems with FaceGen and pronouns—I was thinking of ways of having randomly-generated female players show up in the game. There seem to be two obvious solutions both starting with the creation of an "ethnicity" for female names. You could then: 1. Add the ethnicity to a Nation at whatever percentage is appropriate for what you are trying to achieve (.01% for surprises; 100% for AAGPBL) OR 2 Create a fictional nation that uses only the female names ethnicity, then add it to a Nation as a Second Nation (specifying that second nation should use of the name set when that Second Nation is used); again at whatever percentage seemed appropriate. I figure #1 would be better if there were female name sets for each existing ethnicity. As an aside, it would really be better if the existing ethnicity name sets just included a gender flag that could take on multiple values so modders could make as many genders as they wanted and use different names for each; that would be the most flexible approach. Modders could then specify what the pronouns ought to be in each case. #2 has the nice advantage of making it possible to identify female players if any are generated . . . and so circles back to why I was curious as to whether the gender setting for a nation does anything Last edited by FleetWalker; 12-09-2021 at 04:58 PM. |

I've been making a female league finally after years of forgetting and my option was to do #2 the easiest way is to pick one of the many random territories that are in OOTP and will never generate a baseball player, assign that nation to female names since it's an omnibus file of women names anyway and let that generate them all. If you want alternatives like more ethnically appropriate names, then letting individual male generated names into the league case-by-case is easy because you can then edit them as you need to.
But doing this allows one to isolate where the female names are coming from and you can keep them out of the main leagues by simply not allow players in or out, which will be my solution when I finally import my women's league into my main universe at some point |

Hidden in my names.xml file is a female name set, the female version of the American names set (set 0). That set is 194.
So if you alter any nation to use set 194, you will get American female names. I was planning to add more nation sets but it would look strange without a female facegen. |

There would plenty of interest in international women's name sets, regardless of facegen. I adapted your sets for use in Title Bout. Women's names would be very handy for that game.
I would think the places that use gendered last names (eastern Europeans. Iceland, Mongolia, etc.) or put family names first (China) would be significant obstacles unless you just double the size of the name file. |
