What should I do about this bad trade I made

The more I play OOTP the more I realize that control is crucial for starting pitchers. It's not because walks are all that terrible in and of themselves, in fact woba/ WRC+ rank walks lower than all other methods for reaching base. Instead it's because pitchers with low control have throw significantly more pitches per AB than pitchers with high control regardless of whether they are walking all that many or recovering from falling behind in AB's.

All that said I made a terrible trade for a pitcher with good stuff and movement but low control. He starts to eat into his stamine by the second inning of his outings... it's very dissappointing to see.

All that said, he is young, has good stuff and movement and is a 60/80 overall. Do I put him in the pen, trade him for prospects, make him the team mascot? Idk...

Lmk if there are other relevant details!

I typically have pretty good success turning pitchers like that into MIRP. Have him throw 2 innings every 2-3 days or so in high leverage spots and you can get a similar volume of innings as you would as a starter, but in higher leverage with higher effectiveness.

Wow... why did this not dawn on me. I guess I just immediately sensed that he would be less effective/ valuable as a reliver. Someone has to pitch middle relief though, and the low control shouldn't effect him as much in that role. If his control blossoms I can try him as a starter in the future.

Thanks mate!

I have done this in the past, traded for a guy who has been exclusively a starter and when he came to me, he could barely get out of the 4th inning. I would move him to the bullpen and in at least 2 cases, that pitcher became an All-Star closer, one became my teams all time saves leader, ended up with something like 600 saves over 14 seasons.

Like Marinersfan51 said, try him out this season in middle relief and slowly move him into more high leverage situations and see how he responds, and if he is young enough and can handle it, you may have found a long term solution in the back end of the bullpen.

I also like to draft starting pitchers who have really good movement and stuff and throw 97+ and after their first year in Rookie ball, I will move them to the closer or setup role in A ball and see how they do, this has usually worked out very well for me and keeps me from having to overspend for relief pitching and when they get to the point where they want too much money, I trade them and bring up the next guy in the pipeline.

Doesn't sound like a terrible idea but where do you get your starters?

I have been good at drafting guys in the top 4 or 5 rounds that have panned out as solid starting pitchers. But I also tend to swing big for a 25/26 year old free agent starting pitcher to anchor my staff if I need at top notch guy, or will shell out the prospects if I am in the hunt for the pennant or the right guy is available.

I usually play with expansion teams, I will sim 2 or 3 seasons of a standard game and then expand by 2 teams and take over one of them. I will focus on drafting starting pitchers in those first couple of drafts and try to find serviceable guys in the expansion draft or free agency until my prospect start to develop and debut in the majors. Usually takes me 3 or 4 years to build up to an actual threat to make the playoffs, but by then I have usually figured out the top of my rotation and just fill in where needed.

Once I start to fall out of contention, I go into a rebuild mode and just focus on my starting pitchers and can usually find home grown guys to take over in the rotation and the rinse and repeat.

Agree with the advice you have received.

I might also shop this guy, if only to see if the high stuff rating attracts some suitors who could offer something now to save you retraining this guy as a RP.
