I'm confused. Will players that played for a certain team but not in the right time period still be in there? I mean, if there was a hall of famer who played for one team in the 70s and 80s, and your all time team for that team is from 1998, would this player be included at all? Will he be a free agent or something?

Boozie, lets take Eddie Murray as an example. He played for a number of teams over his career most notably with the Baltimore Orioles and the LA Dodgers. There are probably 6 or more different versions of him in the database (free agent pool). But since the 1969 Orioles (the year they had the most wins in their franchise history) are used in the league, all players on their 40 man roster are from the late 50's, 60's and early 70's. Of course there may be a few exceptions. All the Eddie Murrary's appear in the database with the "YEAR" AND "TEAM" he played on. For example, Eddie Murray'96D. So, you will be able to add, change, or even delete (keep a back up copy) players or change rosters in whatever way you desire. There are hundreds and hundreds of duplicate players in the database but only one for each year a player played ball. There are great players and not so great players - more than enough to fill up any kind of roster you want.
In otherwords, they will "all" be here waiting to play in the "big" game!

Hope this helps

Weekend Roundup - 11/10/03

I remember the 1977 & 1978 National League Championship series when the LA Dodgers and the Philadelphia Philles aquared off against one another. On both occassions the Dodgers came out ahead 3 games to 1.

This past weekend the LA Dodgers'74 and the Pasadena Trolleys'96 caught up with the Phillies'77 in a practice game.

Dodgers'74 vs. Phillies'77 - Liberty Field; Attendance: 49,863

The blue crew sent Fernando Valenzuela'82 up against the always formiddable Steve Carlton'77. The Stadium was rocking.

The Dodgers'77 scored a quick run in the top of the 1st inning on 328 ft solo HR down the right field line by Jimmy Wynn'74.

However Fernando, always known for that shaky 1st inning start,
surrendered 2 runs to the hard hitting phillies after Bake McBride'77 doubled to right-center and was cashed in on consecutive run producting hits by Dick Allen'67 and Greg Luzinski'77. The score remained 2-1 into the top of the 4th inning as Valenzuela & Carlton settled down into a pitchers duel.

Pedro Guerrero'85 blasted a 426 ft. homer in the top of the 4th to help the Dodgers'77 tie the game at 2-2. The game was tied going into the top of the 9th as Fernando fanned 6 and Steve
"Lefty" Carlton held the Dodger bats quiet while scattering only 3 hits until Guerrero stepped into the batters box in the top of the 9th. Guerrero'85 connected on a Carlton screwball and blasted another 436 ft solo that turned out to be the margin of difference as the Dodgers'77 out lasted the Phillies'77 3-2. Steve Carlton went the distance as Jim Brewer'74 picked up the win and Mike Marshall'74 racked up a save. The Dodgers'74 scored 3 runs on 4 hits and the Phillies scored 2 runs on 5 hits.

Trolleys'96 vs. Phillies'77 - Liberty Field; Attendance: 49,176

The Trolleys'96 (actually the Dodgers'96) sent Nomo'96 up against Lefty Steve Carlton'77.

The Phillies'77 jumped out to a quick 1-zip lead on a solo HR by Bake McBride'77. The Trolleys'96 tallied a run in the top of the 2nd to tie the game when Brett Butler'95 crossed the plate after consecutive hits by Mondesi'96 and Piazza'96. But the mighty Phillies'77 chalked up a lone run in both the 3rd and 4th innings.
Von Hayes'85 and Mike Schmidt'77 powered doubles into the alleys and the score stood at 3-1 going into the top of the Dodger'74 5th inning. The Trolleys'96 closed the gap to 3-2 when the red crew got a pinch hit off the bat Eric Karros '96
to drive in Adrian Beltre'00. The Phils'77 quickly scored a tally in the bottom half of the 5th and led 4-2 as the game headed into the 8th inning. Nomo'96 lasted only 5 inngs and surrendered 8 hits while fanning 7. Mark Gutherie'96 & Jay Howell'89 did an applaudable job in holding the Philly'77 bats quiet in the 6th & 7th frames. In the top of the 8th, the Trolleys'96 once again closed to within a run of the lead but trailed 4-3 going into the bottom of the 8th while facing a determined Steve Carlton'77.

The Trolly'96 bullpen was wearing thin as Scott Radinsky'97 got roughed up for 2 runs in the bottom of the 8th as pinch hitter Bill Robinson'73 drove in Greg Luzinski'77 and later scored himself on RBI single by Dave Cash'75. The Phillies had finally broken out and led 6-3 going into the 9th. Carlton'77 gave way to Gene Garber'77 who notched the save and preserved the victory for the Philly ace. The Trolleys'96 scored 3 runs on 10 hits while making an error and the Phillies'77 scored 6 runs on 12 hits while being flawless with the leather. Von Hayes'85 led the Philly attack with 3 hits including a pair of doubles while the Trolleys received 2 hits apiece off the bats of Steve Sax'86, Brian Jordan'02 and Adrian Beltre'00.

Tonight, its on to Pittsburgh!

Are you still planning on releasing this, or is it now just a dynasty thread ?

The Legends League - Where The Past, Present, & Future Collide.
Nukster - the answer to your question is "Yes" I'm hoping to make the Legends League to everyone in the OOTP community.

However, I won't release it until I'm completely finished fine tuning every aspect to the best of my ability. I'm getting a little weary myself as I've been working on this project almost day and night and weekends since last April. I've had a few setbacks but thanks to Markus, those are all behind me now. If you read my posts from a few days ago you can follow the flow of my work and get a better idea of where I'm at with this project.

Since I just noticed that Lahmen's plans to release the 2003 update any day now I will, no doubt, include the lastest players into the database - I'd love to include a couple of the Florida Marlins 2003 pitchers and many others into the Legends League.

I've still got to put together another 14 or so 40-man rosters for the League. And then do "payrolls" for about 25 or so teams.
As I'm sure you will understand, nobody in this league plays for "peanuts" as average team payrolls are around $75M to $85M
and the League salary cap is $100M. Of course, you can change this if you desire.

I also want to include a set of Logos and formatted Stadium graphics for all 36 teams. I have a couple of excellent sets and am still not sure which to use.

Upon completion, the "unedited" version will have just about "everything" anyone would want in setting up and running historical league play with one database where one can find just about any player they desire to include many "duplicates" of the same player but only one each for the year he played. For example, I was looking for a 3rd shortstop for the Phillies'77 team between the years 1966 and 1986 and found that I had seven (7) Dick Groats but only one for which he played on Philadelphia in 1966. The same goes for hundreds of other players!

I'm only posting notes on some practice games so that anyone interested can get an idea of what and who is going on since I know this is a painfully slow process to finish.

Hope this helps answer your questions and I thank you for your interest in the Legends League. You won't be disappointed!

Very cool.

I have been following the flow of things (even the big problems you had way back when), and thought you were going to release it, but then I wasn't quite sure, with all of the games you have been highlighting. I sort of thought that the games you were playing were just to test the teams, but I wasn't entirely sure.

You just sounded like you were having to much fun with it by yourself

Yes, I am having fun too. I usually spend anywhere from 3 to 4 hours or more working on the League each evening. Afterwards, I play one or two games to see how things are turning out. Last night I was lucky enough to get two rosters done - the Pirates'09 (awesome pitching, light hitting, & much stealing) and an AL West expansion team, the Portland Bears'02 (actually the 2002 Oakland A's). They have very good hitting, fair pitching, fair stealing, and decent leather. They beat the Pasadena Trolley's
5-3. I was impressed with Porlands's hitting and Zito'02 was awesome! I plan on getting home early today to start working on the S's ... San Diego, St. Louis Cards, St. Louis Browns, Seattle,
San Francisco, etc. Of course, I'll be lucky to get 2 and a head start on the third done today. Stay tuned as there is much more to come later ... "Happy Veterans Day" to all our wonderful service folks who stand up for democracy and fight for our freedoms.

Just A Note 11/14/03

The San Diego Padres'98, San Francisco Giants'62, Sacramento Bees'02; an AL West expansion team (really the 2002 RedSox) have joined the Legends League.

The Seattle Mariners'01, St. Louis Cardinals'42, and St. Louis Browns'44 and Washington Senators'33 will round out the Legends League.

Afterwards its on to team payrolls and some minor editing and lastly Stadium construction.

Last night the SF Giants'62 behing Gaylord Perry out lasted the Bill Singer'74 and LA Dodgers'74 by a score of 6-3 (some things never change!).

Have a nice weekend.

Sat Nov. 15, 2003 progress report ...

The Seattle Mariners'01 and the St. Louis Cardinals'42 have joined the league. Just 4 more teams to go ... St. Louis Browns'44, Texas Rangers'98, Toronto Blue Jays'9?, and the Washington Senators'33. I'm pushing myself to get these last 4 teams done - its been a long haul up to this point.

Payrolls should go much faster it won't be as time consuming as hunting through the books to fill rosters.

Have a great day!

Wow - The Legends League is Awesome!

Well, I simmed a whole year and was totally surprised by the results! Teams I thought that were doomed to failure did much better than expected and teams I thought were shoe-ins for the Playoffs were disappointing.

However, there is still some fine tuning to do: setting the league stat totals is a first step. Editing and removing and replacing some duplicate players who are playing for two different teams at the same time (fortunately, there are only a few of them). Sometimes this is hard to do because, believe it or not, some players careers spanned 10-15 yrs on the same team!

I'm still adding players to the database. I'm waiting for the 2003 Lahmans DB to be released anyday now so that I can include the most current players ... i.e., Josh Beckett, et al.

Player payrolls and Stadium construction will go quickly, I hope.

This has been a massive project and I want to make it complete in ever way possible.

Lately, I've noticed that many players have their stolen base rating "over-rated." Do you think I should change this now?

I would base ratings on the following:

#Stolen Bases Rating
0 - 09 E
10 - 19 D
20 - 39 C
40 - 50 B
50 + A

Does anyone have any other thoughts to offer me before I go and make massive changes?

Also, what about catcher arm ratings and range? Any ideas?

I'll write more later and let you know how some league games are going. Remember, that these games are being played only so as to test and fine tune the results. It may be impossible to achieve but I'd like achieve as much "parity" between teams as possible.

Legends League Update, Nov 20 2003

Boy does this league sizzle with fun and excitement. I made some adjustments for total stats in the League setup menu to bring down the # of HR's (Manny Ramariez had hit 66 in the one sim yr I played - I thought that was a bit much for him. However, I'm still experimenting with these numbers so as to obtain the best balance between pitching and hitting. It will take 5 or 6 sims to fine tune. The good news is that I have a very fast computer to do simming with. But, boy what a difference!
I've had to spend the last few days concentrating on work work - yes folks, I do still have a job. I wish there was not all this housekeeping stuff to do but that's the way it goes.

So far, I have not heard one suggestion on how to grade base stealing (as per above) or rate catchers are throwing abilities.
Is anyone interested in providing me with some feedback?

Judging from all the feedback I'm getting, I guess it won't matter much that I still have a little more "polish" left in the can.

Have a great weekend all

Alltime teams

It would be better I think if you do All time teams

like the Jays for example

make there roster the best players to dawn the uni's from 79-present.

or yanks from 03-present....

I've been looking for a file like that for the longest time.. It would be great to have a league like that.

Nash, that's almost exactly what I have done with but in a different way. First, almost every important and many not so important player have been keyed into the Free Agent pool even if this has included many multiples for the same player over the course of his career. Second, each team was set up using the year for their best ever Won-Loss single season record. For example, Blue Jays'92 or Yankees'98. The weak or blank players have been discarded and replace with players within a plus or minus 15 to 20 yrs on either of that year. In some cases, say for expansion teams like the B Jays or Mariners this literally translates to their All-Time greatest team. Of course, with so many other players included in the FA pool, one can "tweak" up teams in a matter of minutes and not hours. If you take the time to read some of my previous posts, you'll get a better idea of what I'm saying. For the past week or so, I've been working on setting up team payrolls and adjusting the league settings to get the right balance between hitting and pitching. I've simmed about 7 or 8 seasons and the standings and stats always vary according to my adjustments. Next, I've got to format a few more stadiums and make some very minor roster adjustments. Of course, I'm still combing the books so as to be sure not to leave out any important "role" players. Lastly, I've got to find or create a website from which to host these files - zipped up the DB exceeds 25MB. There will be 36 teams in the whole league; 2 leagues; 3 divisions each; 6 teams in each league. So far, its awesome! I'm hoping to be able to release this by Jan or Feb at the latest. Hang in there because by then it will have been a work in progress every day for over 10 months!

Thanks for your post.

Dec. 4, 2003 Update

Just a minor update on my progress ... 11 more team payrolls to go! I'm still waiting for Lehman's to post the 2003 update. They indicated this would be available by mid-Nov but nothing yet.
Then some minor editing. Lastly, I need to find a "host" for my files or else throw up a website (something I plan to do anyway) and make the league files available from there. I'm finding that if one makes minor changes in the League Setup menu to the frequency of hits, 2B, 3B, HR, SO, BB that it will have a definite impact of almost all the teams in the league with the possibility that they can all win a division, pennant, or even the World Series. That's how competitive its all turned out - amazing, huh?
As you all know, I'm a big Dodger fan but even with as much attention as I've paid in putting together their teams, its a job to keep them going above .500 ball. Yes, they can win it all but their is much work, luck, and frustration along the way. With the exception of maybe the Yankees, nobody is a "shoe-in" to win.
And, even the Yankees have a tough time getting into or even winning the World Series!

So, stay tuned.

Since you are taking the time to do this massive project, I thought I would do a little research to perhaps help you a little. Here is what I gleaned from my current league about stolen base ratings:

All my teams are set to "9" on the 10 scale in the "more stealing" section in "team strategies".
Individual settings are set to the "default" setting (5 on the 10 scale).
If you want the steals leader to have 80-100 SB's, set the individual player's steals to "10" on the 10 scale in the team strategies

The first letter is "speed"...the second letter is "stealing skill".
(these two ratings are apparently used in combination to determine number of steals)

AA = 50 SB out of 62 attempts
AB = 35 SB out of 52 attempts
AC = 20 SB out of 35 attempts
BB = 27 SB out of 40 attempts
BC = 15 SB out of 30 attempts
BD = 7 SB out of 14 attempts
CB = 11 SB out of 16 attempts
CC = 10 SB out of 14 attempts
CD = 5 SB out of 9 attemps
CE = 1 SB out of 3 attempts
DC = 5 SB out of 10 attempts
DD = 2 SB out of 4 attempts
DE = 1 SB out of 3 attempts
EE = 0 SB out of 1 attempt
ED= 2 SB out of 3 attempts

Hope this is useful. It is just a quick estimate based on about 60 players with an average of 8 years of playing time.

I did another study on this subject and came up with a guesstimate of the arm and range of many of the fine catchers in history. It's far from perfect, but the best I could do with the stats I had to work with. It's much better than nothing.

I used the Baseball Encyclopedia and Baseball-Reference.com for the research.

Here is the thread:

Eugene, thanks for sharing. Now if I could only find a reference source for setting "base stealing" ratings. Any ideas? By the way, the legends league is coming along great - I can hardly find any more new players that I have not already included in the database.

Beginning in 1915, "CS" caught stealing stats were kept.
(stopped for about 3 years...then continuously since about 1919)

I used "Baseball-Reference.com" to get the steal ratings for players.

Prior to 1915, you'll just have to make an educated guesstimate for the ratings just using the total steals.

I only used National League figures for the stats below.

Keep in mind the importance of the steals has varied through the years:

Each team averaged 170 steals per season in 1907.
149 in 1915
94 in 1922 (homers greatly increased)
60 in the "hit happy" 1930
49 in 1939
63 in 1960
79 in 1962
87 in 1970
153 in 1980
149 in 1990
100 in 2000

As you can see, someone who stole 20 bases in 1939 was a much better basestealer than one who stole 20 in 1980...or at least has fewer opportunities to steal.
