Haven't played this game in many years ... how is it best to jump back in?

Reading the descriptions of the new game after reading about OOTPBB24 in the Athletic, I'm thinking now might be the time to jump back in, but I'll admit I'm a bit daunted. Is there a manual that explains all the modes, or some strategies about how to jump in without drowning in it all? (EDIT: It's been, apparently, 19 YEARS since I used this account ... stunned it's still here.)

I was going to say, if it's been only a couple years, it shouldn't be too much trouble to jump back in. Some things will be different, for sure, but I'm sure you can adjust back.

19 years though... I mean, the fundamental idea is largely the same, at least. We have added some tutorials in-game to help guide at some level, so you can always jump in there and try them out. Otherwise just jumping in, take control of your favorite team, and learn on the fly.

I recommend starting a current MLB game with the tutorials turned on and have the OOTP manual (https://manuals.ootpdevelopments.com...php?man=ootp24) readily available in another window. As you're going through options, different screens, etc. you can reference the manual to provide more context. Keep in mind the manual doesn't cover absolutely everything, but it covers the main portions of the game you'll be concerned with.

There is also some great YouTube content available from creators like Sgt. Mushroom, pfholden, and more. Some off beginner videos while others cover more in-depth topics (data analytics, etc.). There are also a lot of people who posts OOTP series and you can follow along with them as they play the game their own way (Sporer, etc.). If you want more examples, feel free to let me know and I'll share some of the OOTP content creators I'm subscribed to.

Finally, you can always ask questions here or in the Discord (if you prefer that medium). There's a lot of knowledge in the community and most are willing to help out.

Welcome back!

Welcome back to the Boards. If the last version you played aligns with your last Board post, I'm guessing you would be moving from v4(?) to v24 -- that is a big (but really fun) jump. Good luck!

I didn't realize there were any baseball fans in Indy after I left!

I suggest starting with a historical team where you are familiar with the players. Set scouting to 100%, use a reserve roster, turn off owner goals, disable storylines, and kill all the psychology.

Thanks for the quick reply ... yes it was OOTP4. Spent the last decade and a half moving from .400 Software to playing Grey Dog Software and then Wolverine Software games. Definitely going to give this one a spin; no one else does baseball well.

Thanks man, I'll probably need it ... the stars aligned and I rejoined the forums on pay day, so I decided to go ahead and buy the game sight unseen. My wife agrees that, even if she does not share my affinity for text-based GM-itude, the game's 25 year pedigree speaks for itself.

Okay this game is already seriously f---ing addictive I took everyone's advice and created a league where I can follow the tutorials and kinda play in the sandbox, so I took over as the GM / Manager of the Indianapolis Indians (AAA for Pittsburgh). And I'm playing out my games, but I chose to only control pitching and substitutions, letting my coaches handle the rest. In my first series we swept the Omaha Storm Chasers in Indianapolis, winning the first game 16-4, but winning the second and third games BOTH in 11 innings. Our closer Colin Selby won both games for us, the first 4-3 and the second 9-8 (after coming back from down 2-7 in the 3rd!) . . . so in his first two games he's thrown four innings, giving up just one hit against one walk and 4 K's

I think I made the right decision to take the leap

Welcome back JK. I recognize you from the Greydog and Wolverine boards. While there are many good GM games around…this one is absolutely the grand daddy Major League of them all. Looking forward to reading a dynasty report you put together with an OOTP dynasty!

Thanks, redranger I'm giving it a go on the dynasty report angle as I take over as the Cubs' manager in 1953: "Let's Play Two!"

Hope you enjoy it The hardest part of this game is deciding how to set up a game and what you want to accomplish with it.

Lol ... it was the same one I used on all my accounts back in the day They had us using passwords with letter / number / special characters when I went to IU, so you really didn't need to change them very often if you made sure they didn't have any words in them I was less sure about the user name, though I tended to use jksander across all the message boards back then, so the odds were in my favor that it was the one I'd used.
