Did the latest patch mess up something in free agency?

So I got the update of the latest patch and installed it. Immediately, something happened in free agency I'd never seen before.

I was trying to acquire 2 free agents in the usual way - bidding over the last team to offer a deal. A few days later I got messages saying the player had signed with the team I just outbid.

This is year 8 of my league, so 7 free agency offseasons so far, and I'd never seen this before. So, my question is -

1 - Does this happen and I've just never experienced it?
2 - Did I throw something off by updating the patch in the middle of the offseason?
3 - Did the latest patch throw this off?

Anyone else see something similar?

Unless they have changed things in recent years, other factors are involved besides the money although that is the biggest factor, of course. A player may not like your team's record, his prospects for starting at his preferred position on your team, or even your team's distance from his home town. I imagine that the developers also have included such things as your team's chemistry and cohesion. So it's not just a matter of outbidding the other teams all the time.

Thank you for this response.

It seems unusual, though, that I'd never seen this happen in 7 seasons of play and then it happens twice within a week.

My team's chemistry was excellent, so that can be ruled out, at least.

It also could be that the player does not like your manager or other coaches, money is not the end all anymore in OOTP like it had been in the past, but that feature has been in for few years now, so maybe it was just this particular player's personality.

I like playing expansion teams and have had this happen occasionally. Not often, but it does happen. I just assume they don't want to play for a bad team and are using me to run up the bids for the team they want to play for.

I think it’s a good thing that all of these factors are included…but it’s not articulated to the user when they are triggered…so you are walking around blind all of the time. The players’ need to be communicating their concerns to the GM during and after negotiations. This is something OOTPD has never understood…how to bring players to life…unlike SI.
