1953 Era

What is the low down on 1953 era tournaments? I'm under the impression that SP Stamina becomes less of an issue, and I think you can run 3 starters? -do I need 4?

what about offence? how suppressed are HR? Do you just look for high BABIP?

looking for some help. I don't do well in these types of tournaments.

They were mostly running 5 man rotations by then, with small bullpens because of stamina. The recommendation is usually like 9ish total pitchers for that era.

I tend to poke around the regular game to get an idea of the landscape for a particular year in PT tournaments. Granted, I’m not as custom savvy as others in recreating everything, but it at least gives me an idea of how to build. I’ll have to keep some strategy planning close to my chest since I’m in that PTCS, but hopefully it gives you a starting point for building your roster.

Teams tended to run five starters and one or two key bullpen guys in the early Fifties, although the schedules were not at all like the tournament schedules. There were frequent double-headers and a lot more travel days, which is why you'll often see starters in relief five or ten times per season. If your train is headed to Saint Louie tomorrow, you might as well get some use out of a rested starter if the game's on the line.

So Billy Pierce is the White Sox ace in 1953, winning 18 games. He still comes out of the pen seven times, picking up three wins and three saves.

In terms of the tournaments, it's a four-man front, and expect the relievers to go two innings apiece unless you change the hook settings.

In ootp in the 50s you only need 3 starters, it is also never correct to run 4 starters in baseball history traditionally, you also need 5 RPs

In general as things get older strikeouts are a lot less home runs are a little less (until 1919 and earlier where they barely exist) and walks go a bit up, defense is a lot more important too and depending on the era error rating can matter a lot more.

I guess your history is shorter than mine. Four starters were the plan in real baseball history for many years. By the early part of the 20th Century, it was the norm and remained so until the 1970s, when the five-man rotation became increasingly common. Using 5 starters is as new as everyone gets a trophy.

PT is a whole different game, but you stated, "...it is never correct to run four starters in baseball history."

Please see the 1970 Orioles for Exhibit A as proof of your spectacular ignorance.
