EC Needs a New Nickname For a Team in My IPA League
Please help me come up with a new nickname for a team in my Islandian Pro Alliance.
Team Name is Fort Benton. I need everybody's help. I will rebrand the Fort Benton Defenders. I need a new nickname for them. I like nicknames based on geography, culture and economy of a town... yes, this is a fictional town, but I will give you some background to help you. And nope, it does not have to be based on geography, regions and culture, you could just come up with a gangbuster name for the team that is out of the blue, using baseball terminology like Ballhawks, Hot Shots, Sluggers, Dingers, Hustlers, Speedsters, Slammers, Homers, Bombers, Fireballers, Swingers, Big Sticks, Whoppers, Ringers, Cannons -- anything connected to baseball that is catchy (yep, pun intended). I have another thread on the OOTP Mods Forum for graphics help for the rebranding... I just thought I would get much more help here on the main forum for help in getting a new nicknam. I think it will be OK to do this here on the OOTP Mods Forum... I hope this is an acceptable topic for the moderators... eventually I will need new logos, jerseys and caps. Here is the town history to help you in coming up with a new nickname. FORT BENTON DEFENDERS (aka GENERALS 2066-2072) Owner: General Paddy George GM: Robbie Brooks Manager: Augie Marquis Fort Benton, a military town of 62,000, is located in the rugged west central part of Ruthlandia in the Silver Mountains, which forms the western border of the country. Situated on the only land route into the country, Frontier Pass, and just east of the Tycobbian border town, East Point, Fort Benton is named for the garrison and fort that has protected the nation from invaders from the west down through the years. It is still a military training base and site of the Army College, famed for its military research and tactical innovations. It is also the home of the Fort Benton Defenders of the Ruthlandian Union West Division, named in honor of the soldiers that have so long defended the nation. The team plays at a quaint old ballpark, Old Fortress Park, where the outfield walls are formed from the original stone walls and watchtowers of the old fort. Every time the home team hits a homer, an honor guard of soldiers fires a cannon shot for every run scored on the home run. The Defenders were originally owned, operated and commanded by the former general of the Ruthlandian Armed Forces and lifelong resident of Fort Benton, General Patty George. Defender players were never out of shape or pampered...the General makes certain of that. The General had his own thoughts about pampering fans, too. He said his philosophy is you come to watch a ballgame, not to eat, drink and be merry. Therefore the concessions are still quite soldierly and Spartan at Old Fortress Stadium: hot dogs, cokes, hamburgers, peanuts, Crackerjacks, Baby Ruth candy bars and popcorn. Period. No alcoholic beverages were allowed by the teetotaling General. He didn’t allow the players to have beards or facial hair, either. Fort Benton ownership still enforces the General's policies. The Ft. Benton Defenders are currently managed by Augie Marquis, who also serves as the General Manager. He succeeded long-time skipper and GM Robbie Brooks, who was the finest fielding third baseman ever produced in Ruthlandian company leagues. Marquis took over in 2052. He toiled years on the mound for a bad ballclub, but wound up 368-300 with a fine 3.22 ERA for 21 years, 2025 to 2045. He was a four-time All-Star and won the Ruthlandian Union Golden Arm in 2039. Marquis has not made the IPA Hall of Fame yet, but many think he should be there. It's been a rough go of it for Marquis as manager, but he has perked up Fort Benton franchise in recent years, even winning the pennant in 2057... the only other division title came in 2037... the Defenders are one of the worst franchises in IPA history. Old Fortress Park Capacity: 8,500 Dimensions: LF Line 340 LF 360 LCF 385 CF 420 RCF 385 RF 360 RF Line 340 Last edited by Eugene Church; 04-26-2023 at 01:38 PM. |

I think if you want a military theme but also something that connects with baseball the Fort Benton Battery is the name that i like the most. Battery referring to the pitcher catcher combo and the artillery that might be found in an old fortress.
They could also be the batterymen if you want an more classicesque nickname |

Battery definitely has a nice ring to it given the double meaning.
Paragon, maybe?

Keeping with the military theme, I took a look at some "nicknames" that the US Army is using for their various divisions, and specifically the armored divisions (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_o...Army_divisions)
So some suggestions that jumped out to me from the list: - Thundering Herd, or just Herd (kind of goes with the frontier history of the town) - Phantom - Hurricane, Tornado, Thunder Lightening all could fit - Spearhead, Spear - Breakers

I like Battery.
Also like Cannons. Ties into the history of the town and the home run tradition at the ballpark. |

This reminds me of the unofficial "Battery Day" Mets' fans were planning for John Rocker in the late '90s

Fort Benton Cannons is good one... military weapon and also great arm in baseball... as poiuy posted, it ties in with the cannon firing after home runs in the stadium.
Fort Benton Battery is really a good suggestion, too... military group and pitcher and catcher in baseball. Keep in mind, you don't have to relate it to baseball and the military. It could just relate to baseball by itself... or just relate to the military by itself. You can also just pick a good sports name for no rhyme or reason other than it sounds good with Fort Benton or it is just a good nickname. Maybe Bazookas might be a good one... it's military and it has alliteration (same sound)... the B on Benton coupled with the B on Bazookas sounds good together. Fort Benton Cannons or Battery would be a good name. I still like the Defenders myself.

Jeff, my problem with Defenders is it is just hard to find a mascot image that fits well in my opinion... you always have the right to use any new graphics I get or not use them... it is your league and as you know, I want you to play it your way.

For the term "defender" I've used guard dogs, knights, and fortresses to represent that idea in the past. I'll go with whatever you decide, but if you wanted to keep defenders there are a few options.

I really have no issue with the logo I'm using now. The Fort Benton Defenders have been one of the premier teams in my IPA's history, so I will keep their name as is. |

Knowing me, I might still want to consider a new name. But that would mean you doing Fort Benton twice. Do you really want to do that? That's too much for me to ask. |

Kevin, I found a great image... it could be used for both the Defenders and Cannons.
Should you decide to use it, make the nickname one solid color, not two different colors as it is on the logo. And if possible make Fort Benton larger than Belize City... Belize City will not show up well in the game... in my opinion, it needs to be larger and near the size of Defenders. If you have a better idea for the mascot image, use it. perhaps something with alliteration would work.
Fort Benton Bombers (think Bronx Bombers) -or- Fort Benton Fireballers, Fort Benton Brigade, Fort Benton Flyers (can use a jet logo). but if you are okay with moving away from the military theme you could also consider something based on a color palette associated with the town, military, etc like Fort Benton Crimson Brigade (sounds more like a college team though), or Fort Benton Blues (calling reference to the military dress blues). there are a ton of other possibilities if you add context as to region/geographic based animals (state birds etc), the culture of the area, or specific geographic landmarks (like Rockies). Here are some random mascots based on those ideas: -Eagles, Hawks, Falcons, Blackbirds, Hornets, Wolverines, Bulldogs (all have minor connections to military themes) -Rangers, Frontiersmen, Colonels, Guardians, Stars, Fighters, Fury but also what about Silver Mountain Sluggers? if you want a full rebrand... |

The regional name Silver Mountain Sluggers is intriguing... and I don't usually like regional names like Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies... would much prefer Phoenix Diamondbacks and Denver Rockies. But this is a fine suggestion because Fort Benton is in the Silver Mountains in Ruthlandia... glad you read the town history. This is a longshot heading into the home stretch of the nickname race. |
