Best of the Best Mini Seasons

Running a sim where I will play out a mini season with the top third of the league only.

Starting in 1947, I will begin with 3 AL/3 NL teams in this season. The best 6 teams.
-5 man rotations
-4 man bullpen
-DH is used
-lineups for cpu are crafted based on what teams actually did with their players when healthy
-rosters are customised to reflect what the teams had by October 1 of that season.Mid season traded or released players are not on their roster.
-50 game season
-play the other 5 teams 10 times each (5H and 5A)
-each series runs Tuesday to Saturday (sundays and mondays off) and season runs June to August.
-park factors are based on a 3 year calculation that i do myself as i find the game doesnt properly account enough for extremes in parks.
-play out my team's games 1 by 1. For my team I can change the lineup around but the starters are always based on the depth chart and how often these players would be used.

roster rules and the amount of teams will change as the game changes each season.

Starting in 1947 with the advent of the broken color barrier. This seemed like a good starting point.
The teams chosen are not always just by record but what I myself believe to be the best teams. I will control one team myself, changing it each season based on who i think would be the most fun team to use or if it has players i particularly want to use. I will put a small rule of I can't be the same team two seasons in a row just for the sake of variety.

Also, for my own team I play out each game 1 by 1.

1947 Season Preview

The opening season. I spent the last couple weeks setting this season up. I am choosing to be the dodgers for this first year. It should be exciting using Jackie in his first year. He will be the only black player in the league as neither the Browns or Indians will be in it.

The Teams
American Division

New York Yankees
Rotation:
Spec Shea
Allie Reynolds
Spud Chandler
Bill Bevens
Bobo Newsom

Stopper:
Joe Page

Lineup (R/L)
C - Aaron Robinson / Ralph Houk
1B - George McQuinn
2B - Snuffy Stirnweiss
3B - Billy Johnson
SS - Phil Rizzuto
LF - Johnny Lindell
CF - Joe DiMaggio
RF - Tommy Henrich
DH - Charlie Keller

The Yankees were the actual champions this year and have a dominant staff and lineup. Led by Keller and DiMaggio's premier power. Rizzuto and Johnson provide plus defense on the left side of the infield. Shea, Chandler and Reynolds are a top level 1-2-3.

Boston Red Sox
Rotation:
Joe Dobson
Tex Hughson
Dave Ferriss
Denny Galehouse
Earl Johnson

Stopper:
Johnny Murphy

Lineup (R/L)
C - Birdie Tebbetts
1B - Jake Jones
2B - Bobby Doerr
3B - Eddie Pellagrini
SS - Johnny Pesky
LF - Ted Williams
CF - Dom DiMaggio
RF - Sam Mele
DH - Wally Moses

The Sox were hurt by injuries and didn't get enough offense outside of Teddy this season and thus finished third. Dom DiMaggio adds plus-plus defense in center which helps a great 1-2 punch of Dobson and Hughson.

Detroit Tigers
Rotation:
Fred Hutchinson
Hal Newhouser
Dizzy Trout
Art Houtteman
Virgil Trucks

Stopper:
Stubby Overmire

Lineup (R/L)
C - Bob Swift
1B - Roy Cullenbine
2B - Eddie Mayo
3B - George Kell
SS - Eddie Lake
LF - Dick Wakefield
CF - Hoot Evers
RF - Pat Mullin
DH - Vic Wertz / Jimmy Outlaw

The Tigers have an offense set to draw pitches and walks. Cullenbine, Lake and Wakefield all have an elite eye. Cullenbine and Mullin also provide plus power, however the defense features no plus defenders.

National Division

Brooklyn Dodgers
Rotation:
Ralph Branca
Joe Hatten
Vic Lombardi
Harry Taylor
Hal Gregg

Stopper:
Hugh Casey

Lineup (R/L)
C - Bruce Edwards
1B - Jackie Robinson
2B - Eddie Stanky
3B - Spider Jorgensen
SS - Pee Wee Reese
LF - Gene Hermanski / Pete Reiser
CF - Carl Furillo
RF - Dixie Walker
DH - Arky Vaughan / Gene Hermanski

The NL champs feature the first black player in decades in the Majors with Jackie bringing plus contact and speed to a well rounded team. Furillo, Reese and Stanky provide plus defense all the way up the middle. The staff may potentially struggle issuing walks but should be saved enough by defense.

Boston Braves
Rotation:
Warren Spahn
Johnny Sain
Red Barrett
Bill Voiselle
Si Johnson

Stopper:
Walt Lanfronconi

Lineup (R/L)
C - Phil Masi
1B - Earl Torgeson / Frank McCormick
2B - Connie Ryan
3B - Bob Elliott
SS - Dick Culler
LF - Bama Rowell / Danny Litwhiler
CF - Johnny Hopp / Mike McCormick
RF - Tommy Holmes
DH - Frank McCormick / Earl Torgeson

The Braves feature the most platooning of any team featured. Led by Spahn and Sain (and 3 days of rain), they additionally feature the plus power combo of Elliott and Torgeson and great outfield defense.

St. Louis Cardinals
Rotation:
Red Munger
Murry Dickson
Harry Brecheen
Howie Pollet
Jim Hearn

Stopper:
Al Brazle

Lineup:
C - Joe Garagiola / Del Rice
1B - Stan Musial
2B - Red Schoendienst
3B - Whitey Kurowski
SS - Marty Marion
LF - Enos Slaughter
CF - Terry Moore
RF - Ron Northey / Joe Medwick
DH - Erv Dusak

Musial is the main feature here in a lineup that is loaded with classic stars like Enos Slaughter, Joe Medwick, Marty Marion, Schoendienst and Kurowski. Munger leads a decent staff. It will be fun to see if they can knock off the Dodgers in this replay.

For sure gonna try and keep up with this as I play the seasons out. Been wanting to do something along these lines for awhile. I think the small seasons and changing teams each year will keep me from getting bored of it.

G1: BRK - 0, DET - 5
Fred Hutchinson holds the Dodgers to no hits through 5 innings before yielding a single but continuing on to a 3-hit shutout. Branca goes the distance for the Dodgers, surrendering 5 runs however aided by 2 Tiger knocks into the stands. Jackie Robinson goes hitless in his first major league game.

Around the League: Ted Williams goes 3/4 with a double and 3 runs leading Boston to victory. Spec Shea shuts out the home team Braves giving the Yankees the opening day win.

G2: BRK - 7, DET - 5
Pee Wee Reese strikes first with a sac fly to score Reiser in the top of the first. Brooklyn's lead would be short lived as Jimmy Outlaw sends Eddie Lake home on a Dixie Walker throwing error. This was followed by George Kell reaching on an error that sent Skeeter Webb across the plate for the 2-1 lead. In the 2nd, Newhouser continued to be hit with Bruce Edwards launching a 2 run blast to left center. Bob Swift would score to tie in the bottom half of the inning after yet another Dixie Walker throwing error. Spider Jorgensen gets the Dodgers back with a single scoring 2 men on a daring run by Furillo the following frame. Swift comes home then on a single for the Tigers to get them within 1 and then in the 5th comes the tie again on a single by Hoot Evers. We finally get a clean inning by both teams in the 6th until Furillo had seen enough and sent a 386 ft bomb to left to take back the Dodger lead. In the top of the 9th Furillo tacked on another solo shot and would help secure the final 7 to 5 victory. Jackie Robinson gets his first two major league hits.

Around the League: Dom DiMaggio goes a perfect 5 for 5 including the game winning run in the top of the 9th that secured another Red Sox victory over the Cards. Henrich and Stirnweiss combine for 6 hits and 5 RBIs as the Yanks pull the rug out from the Braves and take a 6-3 win on the road.

G3: BRK - 1, DET - 9
Duelling no hitters with 2 outs in the bottom of the third was the mirage of a pitcher's battle. A six run 6th inning by the Tigers off the back of Wakefield and Lake homers ended that thought however. Every Tiger hitter besides Swift recorded a hit with six separate Tigers scoring. Rex Barney relieved Vic Lombardi without much help giving up two of his own runs. The lone Dodgers positive was they recorded their first three stolen bases of the season.

Around the League: Spud Chandler shuts out the Braves with the Yanks continuing to pummel the Braves. Jake Jones gets the Red Sox first homer of the season but it doesn't help as it is the lone run scored with Harry Brecheen arresting the BoSox bats.

G4: BRk - 1, DET - 2
Another rough day as the Dodgers failed to ever grab the lead. A Gene Hermanski homerun in the 5th tied it at 1-1, but Eddie Lake's second homerun of the series gave the Tigers all they would need. The Dodgers' lineup continues to fail to produce at the best hitting park they will play at all season only scoring more than 1 run in one of the four games thus far.

Around the League: A five run 5th inning gives the Braves a one run victory, their first of the season. Sibby Sisti reaches base safely four times and knocks two runs in. The Cards tie the series up against Boston with Terry Moore and Del Rice both hitting their first longballs of the young season. Howie Pollet gets the win.

G5: BRK - 6, DET - 9
Pitching woes continue as Hal Gregg gets lit up failing to hold a 3-0 early Dodger lead. Hermanski hits a homerun for 3 runs before a five run 4th by the Tigers aided by errors, balks, and walks. Tigers finish with half the hits but take advantage all day of poor Dodger play. Dodgers have 1st/3rd and 2nd/3rd in successive innings with no outs and fail to score.

Around the League: Tommy Henrich punches a homer for the Yanks and Bobo Newsom gets the win despite giving up 4. Red Sox lose their third straight in a close one to Jim Hearn and the Cards.

That was as infuriating a series as I ever have played in 15 years of this game. Playing in the best hitting ballpark in the league my team managed a .623 OPS (mostly only because of the final game brought it up above .500).
I had a balk recorded, walked 26 batters, gave up 8 homers, and 7 errors by the defense including two separate 3 error games, and was outscored 30-15.

Starting the season 1-4 isn't very promising. The Cardinals lead the National circuit at 3-2 so the odds aren't crazy but that was very humbling and defeating. Hopefully I can manage to fair better next week against Ted Williams' Red Sox.

I am midway into the second series of the season but finding motivation hard lol. I've never had a team so good on paper play this poorly. Defensively I commit well more errors than everyone else and my pitching is a trainwreck. Unable to hold leads at all so far this year. Probably very unlikely I take the pennant in a short season with this bad of a start but here is to hoping i can rattle off a win streak soon.

When you pack the league with talent everyone plays worse.

G1, BOS - 8 BRK - 2
Tie game in the seventh before Branca gives up two runs thanks to an error that could've ended the inning. Rex Barney then gives up 4 more runs in the 9th to make sure a Dodger comeback is impossible.

Around the League - Red Munger shuts down the high power Yankee offense in a 2-1 pitcher's duel. Detroit continues to knock around everyone with a 7-3 victory on the back of a George Kell homer. Warren Spahn has been decimated in back to back series.

G2, BOS - 5, BRK - 4
Tied it up in the 8th and had bases loaded with 1 out but couldnt score. Next inning Hugh Casey gets lit up for 3 hits and gives up the lead. 5th straight loss. This is getting hard to even play out with how bad this team is. On paper we beat the Red Sox in 7 of 9 matchups in the pre-game yet we cant win if our life depended on it.

Around the League - The Cardinals wreck Allie Reynolds in a 10-3 route and Enos Slaughter gets his first homer of the year. Boston snaps the Tiger 4 game win streak with a Johnny Sain shutout.

G3, BOS - 2, BRK - 1
Another day, another loss. Added 3 more errors to my league leading 13 in only 8 games. It's comical at this point. Pee Wee Reese starts the year with 1 hit in 30 at bats along with his 5 errors. His .151 OPS and .884 FP makes him the worst player in the league this year so far (-.6 war). I am first in stolen bags, second in homers, but last or next to last in every other category for hitting and pitching. No words for this team. 1-7.

Around the League - The Braves rattle off a second victory in a row leaving me 2 games back of even them. The Cardinals continue to batter the Yanks with a 3-2 win. Bobby Brown and Spud Chandler (3 H) have great games but the pinstripes still fall and let the Red Sox move into first alone.

G4, BOS - 1, BRK - 17
Added two errors to the league leading total (now at 15 in 9 games) but put together 17 runs in 8 innings batting. It's a shame it came all at once. I am leading by 24-16 in the series but I lost 3 of 4. Baseball is forever frustrating. Hugh Casey gives up a garbage homer to Jake Jones in the 9th to lose the team shutout. Jackie, Reiser and Dixie all hit their first homeruns of the season.

Around the League - The Tigers bounce back with a late inning comeback despite half the hits the Braves had. A rain delay forced the starters out after only 3 innings. The Yankees continue to struggle losing their 4th straight to the Cards. Kurowski and Schoendienst combine for 6 hits, 3 runs and 3 RBIs.

G5, BOS - 2, BRK - 3 F/12
Back to back wins for the first time this year. Hal Gregg gives up the lead in the 7th to let the Sox tie it up on a Sam Mele double. Went to extras. In the 10th had bases loaded with two outs and blew it with Dixie grounding out. The 11th brought 1-2-3 innings for both teams. Rex Barney comes in for the Dodgers in the 12th and shuts down the heart of the Sox lineup and in the bottom frame Eddie Miksis in his first start of the year belts a walk off homer. Big win. Tight series. Three games decided by one run.

Around the League: The Tigers level the lowly Braves with Virgil Trucks spinning another gem and moving to 2-0. The Cardinals complete their sweep on New York. Stan Musial hits his first homerun of the season. The Cardinals nw lead the Dodgers and Braves by 5 games with 20% of the season gone. That is gonna be a tough hill to climb.
