Historical Draft Value

In historical rookie player's editor tab there is this - historical draft value. Does anyone know what it means? My guess is that the higher this number is, the more valuable this player is for AI when it comes to drafting. Can someone clarify this? Thanks.

Their is a field in the database for this with a value entered in it. As you said, the higher the number in this field... the better the player was in real life...

for the most part.

Their are a few "questionable" values, but for the most part it does what it seems to intend to do. This way, if you are playing with historical recalc, an AI team will draft Nolan Ryan early regardless of what his recalc potential is when he is first generated, I'll set it when I am playing Recalc to prevent me from completely taking advantage of the AI in drafts.

I would not set it unless playing recalc.

The AI in OOTP will only use these draft values if you've set your game to base drafting decisions on these values and not the usual AI evaluation. I don't know if the database has been updated with values for all players through 2022. The draft value feature is one that relatively few people have used over the years, and the values were originally created and maintained by a couple of members of the mod community.

I was never completely happy with the results when I tried using this option, but you might prefer it over having the AI draft players based solely on their current and potential ratings when playing a historical game. The draft value was an attempt to quantify a player's future long-term value when playing a historical game using ratings recalculation.

Very interesting. I checked settings - yes, I am playing with historical recalculations, current game is OOTP23 save, started in 1982 and now it is 1994. I kept noticing that top picks are not always top potentials, it made me look in the editor. This is when I got a feeling that top picks have much higher value numbers than later picks with higher potential (scouting is off). Thanks again, this was very helpful.

I believe Spritze is the one that created and maintained it but he passed away a couple years ago.

The way I understand it he would adjust the values of the players some based on what era they played in. For example pitchers in the dead ball era would get a slight boost. I don’t know what criteria he used; WAR value, 5 best years, 10 best years, or something else??? It would also look somewhat at team needs so you wouldn’t end up drafting 4 first basemen as an example. It wasn’t perfect but it was better than the AI IMO. The AI tends to look more at teams needs so it might overlook a very good player if the team doesn’t need another player at that position.

What I do every year for the rookie draft is use the “pre-define” draft value (Spritze) for the 1st round and then turn that off for subsequent rounds since I think the AI will look more at team needs.

Along these lines, how does one create an "all time" draft of all the players in history at their "peak"? It seems like I have done this before in other versions, but I can't seem to find it.
