Rule 5 Returns with Roster Limits
I'm playing the Reds in a live start. I cap minor league rosters at 28-40 players, depending on level, in every save.
I set up my organization on day 0, releasing players to get under my caps. On opening day, other organizations release Rule 5 picks from last December, some of which return to my team (see point 3 below, though). But my rosters are full. The AI DFAs some of my AAA players (good ones on minor league contracts who are not on the secondary roster) to make space for the returns without alerting me, even though I retain full control of minor league promotions, demotions, signings, and releases. In addition to being annoying, and possibly bad for morale even if I patch things up, there are a few other odd things: (1) The DFAed players show up with 0 days remaining immediately after being DFAed by the AI. (2) The returning Rule 5 picks are shown as having cleared waivers even though they spent no time actually on waivers, at least with my organization. (3) The History tab in the player profiles for both returning Rule 5 picks in my current save says they were taken from the Dodgers, not the Reds, in December 2022. So, being released in March 2023, they should not be my problem, I think. (4) The releases of the former Rule 5 picks show up in the league transactions log, but the DFAs of the players they bump from AAA do not. (5) The reminder about DFAed players that usually appears in the task list on my GM home screen does not appear. I restarted my save from a day 0 backup the first time because I thought I'd screwed something up. But it happened again, on opening day (= day 2) when there hasn't been time for anyone to clear waivers (2 < 3) or use up their DFA period (2 < 7), so it seems this might be an easily reproducible bug, at least when roster limits are in effect. But I'm happy to upload my game files if they will be helpful. Meanwhile, I'm going to apologize to my DFAed guys, make a couple more releases, and get on with the Fight for .500™. Go Reds? |

Update: Returns from IL, too
The same phenomenon I noted previously when Rule 5 picks are released and return to my organization also occurs when I send players for rehab assignments to the minors. Namely,
(1) The AI designates AAA players for assignment to keep the roster size at 28. I thought players on rehab do not count toward roster limits, and the game doesn't complain about roster limits when I first make the rehab assignment. (2) The AI chooses to DFA players without even telling me, even though I retain control of promotions, demotions, etc. throughout the organization. It will even DFA top prospects that I've locked to the AAA team. (3) The rehab assignments appear in the league's complete transaction log, but the DFA transactions do not. (4) The DFAd players appear with 0 days remaining on the DFA list immediately after being DFAd. (5) The notice regarding DFAd players that normally would appear in my task list on the manager home screen never shows up. This is getting annoying because the first AAA player the AI likes to DFA is one that I'm specifically trying to start at a specific position in AAA so I can promote him to MLB this year. |
