Can't promote player

So I traded for a European prospect during the offseason, he played the last few games of last season in the AHL & NHL, but now he is unavailable to play for my team (I guess he chose to return to his European team). Is there any way to get him to my team this year or do I just need to wait?

Does your team currently possess his NHL rights? If he was on an expiring contract and you failed to qualify him, you lose the rights to him and he becomes a free agent.

If that's what happened, but you want to bring him onto your team anyway, use Commissioner Mode to edit his NHL rights to your team, and then offer him a contract. Alternatively, you could just edit his contract manually.
