1986 Pittsburgh Pirates Transaction Issue

Hi

I started a historical season for the Boston Red Sox 1986 team. I noticed that the Pirates had sold Barry Bonds to their AAA affiliate in Hawaii. He then mysteriously ended up on the Montreal Expos. How can this be fixed. I forgot to mention that I'm also using commissioner mode. BTW really loving the new game.

Do you have historical transactions enabled?

Yes... Both times I tried to replay this season. If this didn't involve such a major historical player, I probably wouldn't have noticed.

You'll need to post this as a bug in that forum. There have been many changes wrought to the 24 historical database and there are going to be plenty of anomalies like this for a while. By bringing it to the devs' attention you'll accelerate that process.

I just created the 1986 season using 1-yr recalc with real lineups & transactions. Bonds returned from the AAA affiliate to the Pittsburgh roster and made all 108 of his real life starts. I have no idea how Montreal would've signed him in your sim. The AI should make no transactions on its own with real transactions enabled.

Tried several times to play 1986 season with the same results for Barry Bonds. Each time he was removed from the Pirates organization on April 7th which was opening day that year. I even tried waiving and designating him for assignment before the season started. Every time he ended up as a free agent or on another teams AAA affiliate. I've been playing as the Red Sox GM/Manager and commissioner.

Not sure exactly what the differences are between carelli67's and pstrickert's settings, leading to differing results. However, there is a 4/7/86 transaction in the historical txns file that "loans" Bonds to the Pirates' AAA affiliate, Hawaii. In reality, this is was more of a "sent to minors" transaction, and those - in the OOTP transactions file - I believe are ignored.

I believe that if historical minors are enabled, then this "loan" would put Bonds on Hawaii, and therefore he would remain a part of the Pirates' organization - and then a 5/30/86 "returned to original team" transaction would attempt to put him back on Pittsburgh if he wasn't already back on the Pirates' roster. However, without historical minors, then the original "loan" transaction would make a free agent, and thus Montreal or some other team might sign him (although I'm not sure - with hist txns enabled - why Montreal would sign a player if the hist txn file didn't tell it to do so). In this scenario, regardless of where he ended up, that 5/30/86 txn should put him back on the Pirates.

That said, I'm just speculating as to what might have happened. However, if the above is in the ballpark, then some of those "loaned to" txns in the database might need to be re-coded as "sent to" so they are ignored and players stay with their organizations (and some of the "loaned to" txns would also be legit if the player was actually loaned to a team not in the original team's organization).

If the AI is signing free agents, then that's the problem which needs to be fixed. Then again, we need to know if the OP fiddled with any settings.

What jumps off the page for me here is the possibility that historical minors were toggled OFF - perhaps even only briefly before being toggled back ON - and the Bonds transaction happened then.

Thank you for your response. I used historical minor leaguers for the replay of the 1986 season. I set up the league several times to try to see where the issue was coming from. In the end, I set up the league without historical transactions and then switched it on after opening day. The problem (in my case) was resolved since Bonds remained with the Pirates (opening day roster). I've been playing OOTP for 8 years and have never had an issue like this on a replay. I'm sure they will resolve this issue.

I suspect the part in bold is the issue. Not that you did something wrong, or that the game did something wrong...
