Expansion Issues

Started a Standard game, and decided to expand. After I had drafted my team wanted to se how AI would set up team. Put nobody on active roster, five at AAA, and waived everybody else. Lost best four players. Also, no staff in file to offer positions to.

This is the only way I play this game. I'm still enjoying 23, so will probably wait till later in the year to buy this new version, same as I did last year.

Anyway, I never let the AI set up my expansion team. When the game asks, I always say no. Also, I always start unemployed, and then sim at least five to seven seasons before taking over an expansion team. I like to build up some history.

Also, during the draft, to make it more of a challenge, I allow teams to protect 26-28 players. And also, for amount of service time, I change from three to four. If you leave it at three, you can get some really good, young talent, which really isn't reality.

Just my way of playing, but each to his own way.

So you still cannot do an expansion draft with the season ending stats of the year just prior to the expansion draft?
good to know

Using the "custom game" my expansion worked well, there were plenty of staff available. I didn't have the AI set it up though.

This is one broken part of expansion drafts. However, the AI used to build protection lists is really pretty bad, at least it was the last time I did an expansion draft (disclaimer: AI is hard).

Without hesitation I will go into commissioner mode now on the day of the draft and manually ensure that all of the obviously proper players are protected (i.e. I will override the AI protection lists).

I realized I needed to do this when a team literally left a starting pitcher unprotected and he won the Cy Young award maybe two weeks after the draft.

You sure you're not playing as the Reds? That sounds like something Phil Castellini would do in real life!
