Base Coaches Impact
I'm not sure what impact the 1B and 3B coaches have on base running and steals. I've hired good coaches on paper but still had poor base running results, so I wanted to see if people have figured out which skillset is good for which position.
My guess is that the 1B coach is probably more instrumental in steals and that the 3B coach matters more for baserunning, but I don't know if the game sees it that way. Given that, IRL, the 1B coach influences when a player on first steals and the 3B coach is responsible for waving guys to go for home, I figured the corresponding skills - and therefore 1B would have a stronger impact on teaching running, with 3B having a greater impact on in-game running. Does this jibe with people's observations? |

I have tended to look more at what their teaching skills are (on the hiring screen), rather than worry about in-game decisions. A good 1B coach can help runners avoid getting picked off. A good 3B coach can steal a few runs by sending guys, and/or avoid outs at the plate. I'm not at all sure how or if OOTP measures this. There are lots of intangibles. My actual preference is to retire guys at the end of their careers, and then make them eligible as coaches, and hire them, despite the obvious lack of experience. I figure going back to the team they played for has to be an advantage.

I've been curious about this. I have "Legendary" in-game running at both 1B and 3B, but my players get picked off often. Just finished a game in which three of my first five baserunners got picked off by a right-hander with a mediocre hold rating. And Riley Greene (slow, but high steal rating and decent baserunning rating) gets picked more than the rest of the team combined. Wondering if there's a hidden rating. While my baserunning strategies are moved toward aggressive in most cases, they are not individually for Greene--he's set to be fairly conservative. |
