A History of the Collegiate Pyramid

Collegiate Pyramid
I’ve been futzing around with promo/relegation leagues again… starting with a 5-tier league that was set entirely in Washington State, then with a 5-system (divided by region), 4-tier NCAA promo/relegation file that quickly became unmanageable for me, and finally with this, much tighter, 4-tier NCAA promo/relegation set-up. Each tier has 20-teams and play 114 games per season… they are set up as Major League’s with no age limits, etc. I can dive deeper into the settings upon request…

I’ve set-up the save to start in 1900 (stats/financials set to 1986) and will use this thread to track results… covering the topflight with tiers 2-4 playing in the background. I also have a 6-team developmental tournament for players with a max ML Service time of 1-year… we’ll see how it works out as we move forward.

Attached is the make-up of each tier at the start of this save, D1-D4, L to R… No rhyme or reason to where I put teams, I used a larger NCAA Feeder Template and placed teams into each of the tiers that I created willy-nilly.

Collegiate Pyramid - 1900 Season

Collegiate Pyramid - 1900 Season

Our first-ever, division one champion was the LSU Tigers out of Baton Rouge, as they barely outpaced the hard-charging Texas A&M to maintain their place perched at the top of the table. They finished with the 2nd rated offence and 6th rated staff in D1… and led the league in profit at $4.9mm. Interestingly, the Razorbacks, who were nearly relegated this year, finished 2nd in profit at $4.8mm – will be interesting to see what they do next season.

If ever in Baton Rouge, the local Econo Lodge comes highly recommended. That school also has a Beach Volleyball Stadium, which is brilliant.

This Jameson fella even looks like a Bainbridge Islander…

Pyramid Notes:
-The Auburn Tigers and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets suffered the indignity of relegation and were replaced, happily, by the West Virginia Mountaineers and Oklahoma Sooners, respectively.
-As a sort of sidenote, or just because I find it interesting, Wazzu promoted out of the 4th tier and will, henceforth, ply their trade in the 3rd. John Candy’s favorite American college getting after it!
-Blue Mountain State won the annual Summer School tournament, defeating the Harrison University Cougars by a score of 12-3 in the final.

Collegiate Pyramid – 1901 Season

Collegiate Pyramid – 1901 Season

First, that we are seeing West Virginia head back down to Division II after promoting just one short year ago is not surprising… that Oklahoma isn’t joining them is. I expect this to sort of work itself out eventually – but – given the way I set up the player creation modifiers each clubs’ first hand of players, as it were, would make it very difficult to them to stay up once promoted. I think it will take a few seasons of free agent movement and undrafted high schoolers finding homes throughout the tiers to sort this out – but, we shall see... On the draft bit, the topflight has one, a 1-round affair, but I have it set to generate 8-rounds worth of talent… hopefully that’ll stock the lower tiers with talent good enough to help them stay afloat should they find themselves promoted somewhere in the tier system. But, dunno, could go sideways on me, no doubt…. I have played around with promo/relegation leagues in OOTP for a while now and still don’t feel I have it dialed in exactly as I’d like (and, I’m not 100% sure that I even know what it is exactly that I like in this type of set-up). Moving along… so, Mississippi State, eh? Crushed it – 9 games in front of Vandy, 18 ahead of Bama and Tennessee, and they finished first in both offense & pitching/defense… like, 1.1 runs/game better than the next club on defense. That’s approaching juggernaut status. They even won 9 out of their last 10 to close the show. We’ll see if they can keep it up – I really don’t want them to become a dominant force.

A couple of things… the closest Econo Lodge to Starkville, MS is 26.2 miles away in Columbus, MS. That’s too far. A search for Dive Bars using the ‘nearby’ function in Google Maps didn’t result in anything worthwhile. I did find a Red Roof Inn charging just $59 a night3.4 on Google Reviews… A fella named Kendrick had this to say about it, “Upgraded facilities, but not very clean. I'd stay solo, wouldn't dare take my family or a companion”. Not even suitable for a companion, Kendrick? C’mon. Basically, what I'm trying to say here is that I don't want the top flights trophy to live in Starkville for long - town's not awesome enough. I couldn't even find a beach volleyball complex on campus.

BTW… a lot of clubs lost money this season… including Mississippi State who went into the red for nearly one million dollars.

Division 1 Standings

WAR: Tydus Clisham (Mississippi State) - 18-3, 1.37 ERA, 232 K, 0.92 WHIP, 11.4 WAR

Player Notes
-3B Sebastian Ahearn (Missouri) racked up 6 hits in a contest against the formidable Mississippi State Bulldogs… 6-6, 1 HR, 2 RBI… they lost the game, 6-5. At home.
-5 players hit for the cycle… I’m not going to bother naming each one, but one of them is called Nifty Barraza (Georgia) - reminds me of a line from the Dead Milkmen's Big Lizard in My Backyard. It took him 7 AB’s, game went 12 frames, and he won it for them with a run-scoring triple… so, a walk-off cycle? I started looking to see if there has ever been one of those in MLB history and came up blank - granted, I didn’t try very hard, but still… THIS. IS. HISTORIC. I think...
-Three no-hitters… SP’s Jason Boyd (Coastal Carolina), Baltar Rihn (Miami), and Thomas Earnest (South Carolina) did the honors… Boyd’s included 6 K’s.
-SP Tydus Clisham (Mississippi), as you likely already know, earned the pitching triple crown. He was basically the best at everything related to throwing the ball this year.

Amateur Draft:
Pick 1 - Arkansas Razorbacks: SP Pop Magaw, age 18 (Gonzales; Gonzales, TX)
Pick 2 - Duke Blue Devils: SS Napoleon Molina, age 18 (Stillwater (MN) High School; Stillwater, MN)
Pick 3 - Tennessee Volunteers: 1B Malachi Nitz, age 18 (TNXL Academy; Altamonte Springs, FL)
Pick 4 - Coastal Carolina Chanticleers: 3B Mason Keefer, age 18 (Ottumwa; Ottumwa, IA)
Pick 5 - Vanderbilt: 2B Elias Valley, age 18 (Lake Brantley High School; Altamonte Springs, FL)
Pick 6 - Mississippi Rebels: SS Ezra Elliott, age 17 (Pro5 Baseball Academy; Apex, NC)
Pick 7 - Georgia Bulldogs: C Kyle Finocchiaro, age 17 (Thousand Oaks High School; Thousand Oaks, CA)
Pick 8 - Kentucky Wildcats: CF Peleus Long, age 18 (Bloomfield High School; Bloomfield, NJ)
Pick 9 - Mississippi State Bulldogs: SP Chrys Ridge, age 18 (Vandermeulen; Port Jefferson, NY)
Pick 10 - Vanderbilt Commodores: RF Archer Tinsley, age 19 (Southlake Carroll; Southlake, TX)
Pick 11 - Miami Hurricanes: C Roger Wood, age 17 (Maize; Maize, KS)
Pick 12 - Florida Gators: C Matthew Dillin, age 17 (Westosha Central; Salem, WI)
Pick 13 - Missouri Tigers: CF Louis Alfonso, age 18 (Malvern Preparatory School; Malvern, PA)
Pick 14 - Florida State Seminoles: CF Bastien Trapani, age 18 (Pace (FL) High School; Pace, FL)
Pick 15 - South Carolina Gamecocks: SP Liam Huster, age 17 (De La Salle (CA) High School; Concord, CA)
Pick 16 - Mississippi State Bulldogs: SP Neal Bartosiak, age 18 (Owasso High School; Owasso, OK)
Pick 17 - Clemson Tigers: LF George Green, age 18 (Byron Center; Byron Center, MI)
Pick 18 - Alabama Crimson Tide: SP Kenny Pringle, age 18 (Piper High School; Sunrise, FL)
Pick 19 - Georgia Tech: CF Chris Pereira, age 18 (Liberty (AZ) High School; Peoria, AZ)
Pick 20 - Texas AM Aggies: SP Aidan Cook, age 18 (Don Bosco Preparatory High School; Ramsey, NJ)
Pick 21 - LSU Tigers: CF Easton Beilsmith, age 19 (Don Bosco Preparatory High School; Ramsey, NJ)
Pick 22 - Oklahoma: CF Tyler Poss, age 18 (American Heritage (Plantation, FL) High School; Plantation, FL)
Pick 23 - West Virginia: 2B Johnny Thompson, age 17 (Don Bosco Preparatory High School; Ramsey, NJ)

Pyramid Notes:
-West Virginia and Duke suffered the indignity of relegation and were replaced, ecstatically, by the Georgia Tech and Auburn, respectively. Not sure why GA Tech was able to snag a pick in the draft this year seeing as though they were in D2… I’ll need to watch that more closely going forward. What’s the point of being in God Mode if I’m not going to spite my creations?
-Grand Lakes University won the annual Summer School tournament, defeating the Pacific Tech Poppers by a score of 4-3 in the final. Ahh, Pacific Tech… for my money, that’s peak Val Kilmer. And, look, I understand if you lean Tombstone, it’s iconic. But Doc Holiday ain’t no Chris Knight, I can tell you that.

Collegiate Pyramid – 1902 Season

Collegiate Pyramid – 1902 Season

Mississippi State became the first club in D1 to win back-to-back titles and we’re only three years into this thing… Tydus Clisham, the hurler that pretty much blew his competition out of the water became a free agent after their first title, failed to sign anywhere, and instead watched his pals repeat from the comfort of his own living room. Sad. On a number of levels… I’ve fiddled with the finances to correct this. I’m not confident that what I’ve done will work – my combination of raising ticket prices and increasing the value of television contracts feels like witchcraft math. Same as it ever was, Mississippi had the best offense in D1 again, by a wider margin this time, but could only muster the third best staff/defense in the league… and, they lost $860k – so, two titles and they’re still in the red for ~$1.7mm. Seems nearly as lucrative as owning your own Burger King franchise. On the flip, Oklahoma, who somehow staved off a return to D2 were unable to do so this year and will begin their decent into the 7th circle of hell here shortly… along with Kentucky.

Division 1 Standings
Mississippi State Bulldogs (78-36)
Vanderbilt Commodores (71-43)
Miami Hurricanes (70-44)

WAR: Dominic Campbell (Texas AM) - 9-9, 2.04 ERA, 179 K, 1.04 WHIP, 10.1 WAR

Player Notes
-LF LaVan Blassingame (Alabama) went 6-6 in a game against Oklahoma… another 6-hit, 12-inning game. This guy did nothing else though… no runs, no RBI, nothing. His squad won, by a score of 6-5. Everyone was thumping Oklahoma this season… at the time they were 11-54.
-2B Rhet Tarrabe (Kentucky) hit for the cycle against Auburn… he had 4 RBI to go with it… his team lost to the Tigers, however, by a score of 13-10. A real slobber knocker, you ask me.

Amateur Draft:
Pick 1 - Kentucky Wildcats: SS Dale Rogers, age 18 (Buchanan (CA) High School; Clovis, CA)
Pick 2 - Oklahoma Sooners: SP Corky Angelico, age 18 (Archbishop Moeller High School; Cincinnati, OH)
Pick 3 - Florida Gators: CF Chad Lewis, age 18 (Station Camp High School; Gallatin, TN)
Pick 4 - Tennessee Volunteers: RF Scott Dean, age 18 (Roberts; Pottstown, PA)
Pick 5 - Florida Gators: 3B Ken Bramall, age 18 (Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School; Parkland, FL)
Pick 6 - Arkansas Razorbacks: CF Clay Paniagua, age 17 (Hamilton (AZ) High School; Chandler, AZ)
Pick 7 - South Carolina Gamecocks: CF Stewart Smith, age 18 (Owasso High School; Owasso, OK)
Pick 8 - Coastal Carolina Chanticleers: CF Ryan Tavares, age 18 (IMG Academy; Bradenton, FL)
Pick 9 - Clemson Tigers: SP Rodrick Paner, age 17 (Bob Jones High School; Madison, AL)
Pick 10 - Georgia Bulldogs: 2B Dylan Primm, age 18 (McMinnville; McMinnville, OR)

Pyramid Notes:
-Kentucky and Oklahoma were dismissed from Division One, relegated, post haste, to the second tier, and will be replaced, enthusiastically, by San Diego State and Duke, respectively. Duke bounces back after being banished from the limelight for a year… they really just sort of slipped in. The Aztecs ran roughshod over all comers in D2 this season, outpacing the Blue Devils by 15 games – Duke made it over the line by being a scant 2 games better than Pitt and 3 better than North Carolina.
-Pacific Tech flipped the script on Grand Lakes University, reversing last seasons outcome by a score of 10-3 as they win their first Summer School Tournament.

Collegiate Pyramid – 1903 Season

Roll Tide! Yikes… feels gross even jokingly typing that. 2-time champion Mississippi State fell to mid-table, Duke & San Diego State (who actually finished 3 spots ahead of Mississippi State at 5th) managed to stay afloat in the topflight, and Clemson & Texas A&M have been asked to pack up their things and leave. The Crimson Tide boasted the 7th rated offense, paired it with the 1st ranked staff & defense, and somehow, some way, came up smelling roses in the end…

Tuscaloosa looks like a happening town… $64 a night gets you a room at the closest Econo Lodge in Northport, AL… check out this view from the balcony..

You could walk across the lot for a Filet-O-Fish at the McD’s, maybe do a vanilla cone if the ice cream machine is up & running… looks like there’s also a swank little dive bar called the Copper Top that allows pets (or rats, picture is blurry, it’s hard to tell). Not sure if they have high life on tap though… could be a deal breaker if they don’t. All in all, Tuscaloosa looks like it’ll make a fine home for the D1 Championship.

Player Notes
-LF Chris Steed (San Diego State) became the first player to hit four round trippers out of the park during a single game. He did it during a 14-4 route against Duke and was directly responsible for 8 of those runs… Not sure if that’s a team record… must not be as it’s not called out in the box score.
-SS Ezra Elliot (Ole Miss) and 1B Dylan Smith (Duke) each hit for the cycle. Elliot’s was during a 14-inning affair, and his homer that completed the cycle came during the bottom of the 14th frame, a 3-run MOONSHOT to put this one to bed, 5-2. So, that’s the second walk-off cycle I’ve seen in this save. Is that like Meg-Millions, winning numbers lucky, or does this sort of thing happen a lot?
-Four players hit 35+ TANKS this season with Clark Herbert (Georgia Tech) blasting out 53 HR.

Amateur Draft:
Pick 1 - Duke Blue Devils: 3B Mitchell Brown, age 18 (Gulf Breeze High School; Gulf Breeze, FL)

Pick 19 - Miami Hurricanes: CF Evan Gaeta, age 19 (Santa Margarita Catholic; Santa Margarita, CA)
Pick 20 - Vanderbilt: SP Austin Gunter, age 18 (Archbishop Moeller High School; Cincinnati, OH)

Pyramid Notes:
-Texas A&M and Clemson were voted off the island, sent to the second tier, and will be replaced by Maryland and North Carolina, respectively. I kinda dig that the Tarheels are up here with Duke… they’re all blue bloods though, amirite? Also, I just realized that I didn’t add the Oregon Ducks to a tier. So… I’m bouncing Santa Clara and replacing them with Eugene’s favorite sons. I’m sorry Steve Nash, please forgive me.
-Port Chester University defeated Pacific Tech, 7-4, making them the 4th different winner in as many runs of the tournament.

Collegiate Pyramid – 1904 Season

Collegiate Pyramid – 1904 Season

Mississippi State outpaced the competition by 8 games to win their 3rd NCAA D1 Title. I’m not going to lie – I want more parity, but, as in life, sometimes you want something to be one way and, despite your best wishes, it’s the other way. So, instead of turning my attention to the clouds in the sky and harping on them for turning my world so grey, I’ll just sit back and marvel at a club that has become the class of this save in its early going… with the 2nd ranked offense (behind the recently promoted Maryland Terrapins), 4th ranked staff, and an order that was good enough for 152 dingers this year, this may not be the best club built by this school but it was good enough to get the deed done in 1904, and, because it has to be, that’s good enough for me… also, if you’re counting, North Carolina managed to stay up, as did the aforementioned Terps, who somehow managed to finish 2nd on the table after their first season in the top flight.

WAR: Aiden Lawrence (Georgia) - 15-7, 1.79 ERA, 212 K, 0.96 WHIP, 10.8 WAR

Player Notes
-LF Russ Edwards (Maryland) set the single season record for walks… at 109. Nearly 1 per/game. Math! He’s played for Maryland for 4 season – a season in each of the tiers… & he won MVP last season in D2.
-SP Gustavo Neel ((Maryland) set the record for strikeouts thrown in a single game at 18… he accomplished the feat against Auburn and set the bar two K’s above the next guy.
-SP Liam Allen (Alabama) tossed a no-no against Duke – I want to be happy that Duke was on the receiving end, but with Alabama being responsible, I just can’t – with 11 Ks and just one free pass.

Amateur Draft:
Pick 1 - Florida State Seminoles: SS Drake Cassella, age 18 (Roosevelt; Minneapolis, MN)

Other Notes:
-The annual Summer School Tournament concluded with Pacific Tech ruling the roost with a tasty little 8-5 win over Grand Lakes University…

Collegiate Pyramid – 1905 Season

Collegiate Pyramid – 1905 Season

Mississippi State’s dominance would end, hopefully once and for all, as the Arkansas Razorbacks took home their first NCAA D1 Championship by holding off the hard-charging Ole Miss by defeating them in a one-game playoff to top off the most exciting season on record so far… the Razorbacks won by a score of 9-5, lifting the trophy from the state of Mississippi and carrying all the way back to Arkansas…

So, our trophy will reside in Fayetteville where, should you want to visit it or see it in person, you could stay at a swank little Econo Lodge right in the center of town complete with a tip-top pool! I also have it on good authority that the Kingfish is a solid spot for all you booze hounds. You can do a lot worse than Fayetteville… in that I trust.

Player Notes
-SP Jordan Schaffer (Duke) missed tying the single game record for strikeouts by one in a game against Vanderbilt. His 17 are good enough for second all-time.
-2B Ebenezer Bailey (Georgia Tech), CF Armani Austin (Georgia), 1B Brian Coughlin (Florida), and CF Samuel LeGatt (Auburn) each hit for the cycle… Ebenezer’s was a walk off cycle, which I’m starting to think is a lot more common than I thought…
-SP Tydus Clisham (Auburn) and Thomas Collins (Missouri) each tossed no-no’s… Collins’ included 12 K’s. That’s the most K’s in a no-no so far. Of note: Thomas Collins was born in 1882. The Tom Collins cocktail was first memorialized in writing way back in 1876, so, it is possible – NAY, LIKELY – that this guy’s parents named him after the drink on a lark… couple of lushes, those two.
-We have our first milestone… RF Isaac Olson (Alabama) has notched 400 swiped bags as a professional rounder… kid’s got wheels.

Amateur Draft:
I feel like Don Bosco Prep is getting too much draft love in this save… they’ve had 10 draftees so far this save… something’s rotten in Denmark, dig?
Pick 1 - Georgia Bulldogs: CF Jimmie Byler, age 18 (Helix; La Mesa, CA)
Pick 2 - Vanderbilt Commodores: CF Dean Redd, age 18 (Edison High School; Edison, NJ)

Pick 10 - Coastal Carolina: SP Ernie Rolon, age 18 (Don Bosco Preparatory High School; Ramsey, NJ)

Other Notes:
-The annual Summer School Tournament concluded with Pacific Tech doing it big once again, this time taking down the Blue Mountain State Goats on their way to the crown.

Collegiate Pyramid – 1906 Season

Collegiate Pyramid – 1906 Season

Mississippi State does it again… much to the chagrin of, well, me. LSU operated 4 games of the pace, Arizona and the defending champion Arkansas both finished 11 games out, and everyone else was barely worth talking about… that’s 4 titles in 7 years for the Bulldog’s folks. This is their world and we’re just living in it.

Player Notes
-C Jacob Ta (Mississippi State) put 4 balls out of the park during a game against Maryland… he’s the 2nd player in our young history to do so…
-CF Bobby Frank (Texas A&M) hit for the cycle against Arkansas… and, while Texas A&M did walk Arkansas off, it wasn’t Bobby Frank N’ Beans that did it.
-Two more milestones… SP Ron Traxler (South Carolina) is the first hurler to record 100 wins in the top flight, and Rough N’ Ready Clark Herbert (GA Tech) is the first player to hit 200 TANKS. Traxler recorded every single one of his wins with South Carolina and yet his club has never finished higher than 3rd.

Amateur Draft:
