Newby question

I played OOTP 6.5 for years, but I've been out of the sim baseball world for over 5 years. So my question is how has OOTP advanced? I absolutely loved playing in online leagues and I actually miss it. Is '23 worth buying or should I wait for '24? Is there an older version that is best for online play?

Sorry to bombard you guys with so many questions!!

You will get as many answers as there are posters. I've only been around since OOTP 21; yet even in that time the graphics have improved markedly, and both 22 and 23 brought refinements that (to me) made the game both easier to play and even more realistic. I don't play online, but from comments I gather that capability has been ramped up considerably.

Tougher call between buying 23 at a huge discount or waiting a couple months for 24. At this point 23 should be as bug-free as humanly possible, with all of the various patches. I like how it plays. I'll buy 24 when it is available; but I'll experiment with it before transferring my long-running sims.

I don't play online, but from all the postings I see here and on Reddit for leagues with openings, it looks like the vast majority of online leagues are using OOTP23.

As BIGEASY said, there aren't really 'benchmark versions' of OOTP that stick in online leagues the way 6.5 was. 6.5 was the last version on that build of OOTP before the game was remade from the ground up with the release of OOTP2007 a couple years later, and has been building on that version with the yearly releases ever since, so it's almost universally standard for online leagues to run the most current version of the game (or to switch to it a few months after it comes out, once the game has had a few major patches to iron things out and make sure it's stable to use for their league).

And with that, given that there aren't really major differences between versions and its been building on itself for over a decade now, if you'd like to get into modern OOTP you're best off just going with the newest version, 23. Unless you plan on doing some super duper niche stuff, 23 will be able to do whatever it is you wanna do.

Treat yourself to OOTP23. It’s the end of the season so it’s the lowest price it can be. And welcome back!
