how to reducing errors for entire league
It is my understanding that increasing the defensive player for rating for individual players only adjusts the ratio of errors for a given player against the rest of the league - it does not change the total errors committed.
How would I go about decreasing the errors made for the entire league for the whole season? I would like to cut the errors by approximately half of normal. My league is made up of players with gold glove or way above average defensive skills so it stands to reason there should be considerably less errors committed by the entire league (and the individual players) but am not sure how to accomplish that. |

I would caution you to be careful to make sure reducing errors does what you want it to, since elite defenders don't necessarily make any fewer errors than awful defenders- which is one of the reasons Errors is pretty useless as a statistic. If the entire league is plus defenders (or better) then what I think the *actual* thing you'd want to do is lower leaguewide BABIP.
edit- as an example, The Wizard of Oz had a Fielding Percentage of .978 compared to Jeter's .976. The former is by far the best defensive SS in the game's history, and the latter is the player who has hurt his team more on defense than any other. Last edited by MathBandit; 01-12-2023 at 03:40 PM. |

Under League Settings --> Stats & AI --> Position Modifiers
There are Range and Error modifiers for each position. I would recommend backing up and testing your league when messing with these. |

Thank you MathBandit - you make a valid point about Ozzie and Jeter.
And Rain King, thank you as well. I will try modifying the position modifiers and running a few test seasons. |

I lowered my league fielding average from .980 FA to .975 in one of my leagues and from .980 FA to .965 in another league. Just be sure to read the instructions in the OOTP Manual so that you do it correctly... sometime you raise numbers to lower them in OOTP... and sometimes your lower them to raise them. Make a backup of your league first and foremost... make the changes in the position modifiers... run a test year and see what happen to the league fielding average... run several years to make you get the FA where you want it. |

Taken from the OOTP Manual.
Position Modifiers Position Modifiers affect the defensive aspect of the game. By adjusting these modifiers, you can alter the impact of different positions on your league, defensively. Each position has a range and error component. Increasing the Range modifier will increase the range of players at that position, putting them in a position to make more plays. Increasing the Error component increases the number of errors at that position, causing a decrease in fielding percentage. As usual, all values are relative to modern day professional baseball. I increased the Error number 10% at each position and got lower league fielding averages. I had to do it several times to get each league to the fielding average I wanted. I did not change the Range numbers. Last edited by Eugene Church; 01-16-2023 at 08:23 PM. |
