Position Ratings derived from Defensive Ratings?
Hi all,
Based on some reading I've done (please correct me if I've got this wrong), the Position Ratings (positions 1 through 9, assuming having played there) are derived from the Defensive Ratings (Catcher Ability, Catcher Arm, Infield Range, Infield Error, Infield Arm, Turn DP, Outfield Range, Outfield Error, Outfield Arm). If this is correct, are the formulas known as to how the Position Ratings are derived? If so, please share! Thanks all. |

You are correct, except experience is also a factor. So yes, the defensive skill ratings will determine if a player has decent aptitude to learn a position and after that, experience will also come into play.

The component ratings are used to generate the positional ratings. However, I think that there are definitely instances in which a player with a lower overall positional rating will play better defense than a player with a higher overall positional rating. I consider the positional rating a general reference but will always look at their component ratings. For example, in LF the game weights OF Error and OF Arm a bit too much into the formula for the overall positional rating I suspect. So, there are probably instances there for a LF with better range, who will get you more outs, might have a lower overall positional rating than another LF on your team because the other player has great OF Error or OF Arm ratings.

I don't know if the formulas are public knowledge, but I use this tool extensively in my sims (both online and offline) and have found it to be very useful and helpful at planning potential position swaps:

Thanks everyone, really appreciate the input.
For anyone interested, Dan - the creator was interviewed in relation to his experience with this calculator. Link below. I've reached out to Dan to get his insight into these formulas. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X2uNZ1jTw4w Thanks again. |
