I like the signing. The still need a left fielder. I want Benny but seems many folks are enamored with Reynolds. Reynolds struck out last year 141 times, seems we have way too many of those types. I want more contact hitters.

In regard to MLB.tv I myself am not sure if I am going to renew my subscription. Plenty of limitations and too many blackouts. I don't watch all the games anyways too many things going on.

Actually, I talked myself into cancelling. I'm going to do that now.

If you have cable with a sports package of at least local networks, try doing something that I am in the process of discovering.

That is, go to websites of the sports networks that you are already paying to see on cable. Many of them now offer streaming services that honor your patronage of your local cable company as long as you are receiving their channels.

Fox Sports and SNY do this, and I am in the process of checking out YES for the Yankees next year. They all have asked me to sign in with my Optimum login and password, and the first two worked fine.

I guess the thinking is, you are already paying for the views, plus you are adding to the audiences sitting through their commercials. If I can see the Yankees games through streaming YES next season, I will take that deal. I can see live games and replays on my laptop and phone.

He was one of those characters who deserve his Hall of Fame berth, not for his ballplaying statistics, but for his memorable impact on the game and its enjoyment.

Well, you could have put him in the broadcasters' wing without using his popularity on the mic to put him in the players' wing. But that's an ongoing complaint of mine; see also Ron Santo.

I mean, I'll be glad if the exposure gets Keith Hernandez his IMO deserved spot, so feel free to call me a hypocrite, but still.

35, coming off of injuries and a bad season? Yeah, that spells K-A-N-S-A-S C-I-T-Y to me, too.

Say hi to Grienke! (Unless he retired.)

Joining the Evil Empire for the first real game of the season.

Sorry, but I have to root for Conforto and Wilmer Flores.

...who Cole turned into dinner the first time through.

He still have well above average velocity.

Why don't these flamethrowers just take a LITTLE off their pitches, with a LITTLE more control? They would be almost unhittable, if they could spot their pitches better.

God. Yankees-Giants.

19 strikeouts already, at the end of the fourth inning.

Remind me again how much I hate modern baseball.

It turned out alright, depending on your point of view.

19 whiffs to FIVE other outs, total?

Damn you, Kris Bryant. Damn you to HELL. (Which doesn't actually exist, but my powers are limited, anyhow.)

Despite the score, it was even in K's, 16 apiece! Pretty windy in old Yankee Stadium today.

Pieced together from an article in The Athletic:

The Yankees are in a bind with uniform numbers. "The Yankees — victims of their own success or self-aggrandizement — have retired so many that they’re running out."
Quote:
The Yankees have retired 22 numbers — well ahead of the second-place Cardinals, who have retired 14. New York is also keeping three out of circulation on purpose.

Two of them are in reverence for recently departed franchise stars — a practice common throughout the league. They include No. 19 for Masahiro Tanaka and No. 52 for CC Sabathia.

The third number remains uncirculated as a mutual service to players who don’t want to wear it and the team that doesn’t want to give it out. It’s No. 69, a perfectly nice number most often associated with, well, you know. On a list of Yankees uniform numbers pinned to a corkboard in the middle of the spring training clubhouse, No. 69 is skipped over, like the 13th floor in a hotel. In 1990, reliever Alan Mills had the dubious honor of being the only player in Yankees history to wear No. 69 during an actual game. (Mills was given the number in spring training, and he held onto it when he made the Opening Day roster, but the team made him switch to No. 28 midseason. “I wanted to keep it,” Mills said. “They didn’t want me to have it in New York.”)
The problem is worsened by "on-field coaching staff, which has exploded to 11 people, up from just six a decade ago." But,
Quote:
Once the ceremonies of Opening Day are done, and the season has settled into its typical rhythms, Boone and the coaches will opt most days for the warmth and comfort of league-issued hoodies or pullovers, not unlike most staffs around the league. And if they aren’t going to show their numbers during games, [director of Yankee clubhouse operations Lou Cucuzza] wonders, why even give them numbers anymore? Wouldn’t they be better left for the players?
So, the club has appealed to MLB to be allowed to drop uniform numbers for managers and coaches. “It’s going to get to a point where, if the coaches are going to keep their numbers, we may get to triple digits one day,” Cucuzza said.

I was thrilled to see Arson Judge mash the first pitch he saw 450 feet or whatever it was (miles?).

I heard one of the Giants' broadcasters today speculating that the weather tomorrow might be a problem in a couple of ways, obviously for the game. But I guess Fox has already grabbed up the broadcast rights, and if the game is delayed much they'll just show something else. The Giants certainly won't have a crew there, and from what I understood the exclusivity doesn't revert. So maybe YES can't show it either, and Meredith and Co. will have a day off? We may all be listening to Sterling's live re-creations

I'd totally wear #69 if it meant I'd make $600k or whatever the new minimum is.

Heck, I'd do it for $100k, while the mooks in the cheap seats in right throw bottles at me.

Surely we can exile the coaches the likes of #80-89 or some such hinterland. 25 numbers out of circulation plus 25 active players plus 11 coaches still leaves almost 40 numbers for call-ups and such. I don't think we really have to worry about "running out of numbers" anytime soon.

BTW, the article's referring to Tanaka and Sabathia as "recently departed franchise stars" made me worry that Masa and CC had, y'know…died. There had to have been a better way to say that.

"...and here's the starting lineup, brought to you by Tiktok."

Is George Steinbrenner's ghost okay with that?
