72 Team 1S9D8T 102 Games

Might be a tough one witth the odd # of divisions, but I think it's doable if half the teams play 1 div and the other half another in non-div weeks (if it's too difficult to mix up).

Looking to start season 1st week of May. 1 off day per week/roughly every 7 days, and no all-star game, 3 game series.

Ideally:
72 non divisions games (play each team in 3 other divisions 8x3x3 =72)
30 Division games (play 3 of your division opponents twice, and the other 4 only once, 3x3x2 = 18 + 4x3x1 = 12, 18+12 =30).

The odd number of divisions makes this impossible as written.

However, if everyone plays 3 teams from each of 8 divisions instead of 8 teams from each of 3 divisions, things start to fall into place.

My personal preference would be for the suggestion by bwburke94 to have the interdivision games be one series against three teams from each other division because then with the natural season-to-season variation the game puts in a schedule there is at least the chance to play every other team over time.

A sort of middle ground would be playing half the teams from six divisions. If you wanted that, I would ask if you have any preference for which divisions you would want to match up. It is fine if there is no preference, and I would guess there is not since it was not in the original post.

Really? I prefer to keep the schedules as close as possible for teams in the same division to preserve the integrity of winning the division.

I thought/(was hoping I guess) something along the lines of (using 3 divisions): A1vB1, A2vB2, A3vB3, A4vB4, A5vC1, A6vC2, A7vC3, A8vC4, B5vC5, B6vC6, B7vC7, B8vC8 (and rotating within the groups of 4/half divisions) would allow the odd number to work; but, I'll certainly defer to your expertise.

Barring that, I'd be happy/thankful to get a schedule per your suggestion, where each team plays 3 teams from each of the other 8 divisions.

And I see the issue with my suggestion now/3rd series complicating thigs/throwing things out of whack.

Yup, splitting the divisions in half gets rid of the one odd number, but as you note the 3rd series is another odd number that blocks the path.

If a key goal is consistency of opponents within the division, then my suggestion is in this direction - play each division opponent 2 times (7 opponents time 2 series times 3 games = 42 games), play each opponent in 2 other division once (2 divisions times 8 opponents times 1 series times 3 games = 48 games), and figure out something for the last 4 series (12 games) to get to the 102 total.

Various ways to go with those last four series. Could go all divisional, but that is getting to quite a few more than the original request. Could have each team play 1 team from four other divisions, 2 teams from two other divisions, or 4 teams from one other division. The last gives the maximum consistency with half of each division having the same opponents besides themselves.

I think playing 3 teams from each of the other 8 divisions is the way I'd prefer to go.

Appreciate all the suggestions!!!!
