Salary payoff
If your top salaried player is completely useless and can't be traded because of his salary (one year to go), how does it affect your finances if you simply release him and pay him off for the year?

You get a choice to pay him all the money now or as it comes due which if he's in his last year doesn't really make a difference at the end of the year.

But does paying him off now free up your finances so you have more to spend on contract extensions or free agents?

If he's in the last year, releasing him will have no effect on your finances at all. If he has one year remaining after the current one, then if you have the money to pay both years of his contract this year you can do so (which means the money would be off the books next year), or you can choose to let the finances remain unchanged by paying him his salary each year. |
