Tactics: Looking to take my FHM9 club to the next level

I am a casual hockey fan and love playing FHM but mostly my game plan has been to just try to develop good talent. I've watched a lot of hockey and certainly understand the game but I've never actually played the game so I feel like I'm lacking a next level understanding.

Any recommendations on books, websites, etc that teach hockey tactics?

I'm in the same boat as you man, I just read "Take your eyes off the puck" I wouldn't say that it teaches hockey tactics but it certainly gives explanations about tactical aspects and a broad sweep across all things hockey. Only about 250 pages and it's a good read.

I'd love to hear if other people have different rec's too.

Thanks, that sounds good! I was explaining this to my Dad the other day... As a soccer player I can watch the whole field, I know not to watch the ball, and can really enjoy the game.

Part of me enjoys watching hockey because I can just relax and enjoy the game, but I would like to understand more of the how/why of positioning, tactics, and player roles.

But thanks, I'll have a look at this book

My favorite hockey book of all time.

As to your question, this is not football manager so I don't think you have to know a lot about tactics to be successful...I make the playoffs with an expansion team most if not all years and I keep it pretty simple:

- I constantly am looking to acquire players that allow me to to do the following with players in their primary roles and positions:

- Have a playmaker on each of the top 3 lines to feed a scorer.

- Have an offensive minded/two way defenseman and pair him with a stay at home defenseman on lines 1 and/or 2 and use two stay at home/old School on lines 2 and/or 3 based on if need to be more defensive based on personnel and tactic.

- Choose a tactic that matches the personnel (using the information is in the description of the tactic).

Additionally:

- I have read a lot about not changing a tactic too much but if I lose a few games in a row, I will and it usually helps.

- I usually have AI assign lines and roles and then I adjust from there. Once done, I do try to keep lines together to build chemistry.

I know some players delve much deeper into tactics but, like I said, I keep it that basic and tend to do well.

This is helpful renojedi! I'm doing a few of the things above so good to know I've got some of it right, but your other points are really helpful.

Appreciate it!

This thread has a ton of good info but it is a little scattered and a lot to take in. I highly recommend it nonetheless!

I tried to read this a few times but it is so hard to read and "scattered". Reads like a bad google translation or maybe English is not their first language. I really respect them for trying to do this and putting the time to write this down. But it really does not do it for me (and I am sure I am not the only one on this forum). Wish there was a more simplified more recent guide.

If you're primarily looking to understand FHM tactics, this thread lays it all out in a highly readable chart format:

Jack Han does a nice series of books on tactics (team by team). There are graphics and he explains what works/doesn't work with the tactics that each team utilizes. It gives you a nice understanding of how the whole thing works.

Were those charts taken from the game at the time? Or did the game implement their player role information based off the work from those charts?

Whoa, this looks so intense! I'm interested! I'll have to rustle up the cash, but it looks fascinating and will be great for my nightly hockey watching this winter! Thanks!

This thread from the FHM6 board is incredible if you are newer to either or both hockey tactics or / and FHM:

Not new to the game, but I've been playing long enough to want to do more than simply just try and draft good players and hope for the best. Thanks for the link, I'll have a look!

I think it was the former.
