If you could only pick one OOTP version....
You get to pick any version of OOTP (up to now) to play for the rest of your life. Whichever version you pick, that's the only copy of OOTP you get to play. Which version are you picking?

OOTP 17. My preferred way of playing OOTP is to crank up PCMs and development and have a league where all players enter the league at 20 and the maximum age in the league is 28, so players are constantly cycled out of the league and players develop fast enough that some can (and generally have to) play a big role on their team from their first season being drafted. Every OOTP I've tried from 18 through 21 has had some interesting AI quirk that made this play style untenable (generally the AI releasing a player midseason if they turn 29), whereas in OOTP 17 the AI will keep those players until they're forced off the roster at the end of the season. The only limitation is that those players can't be traded or demoted, but can still be activated off the IL should they get hurt.

It’s funny how the development cycles work…the truth is 23 is now ready to be the latest an greatest, soon the cycle will start all over again, v24 will come out in spring, but won’t be fully playable until about a year from now

What's the last version before those dumb morons (Manfred, etc...) ruined the minor leagues? That's the one I'd pick.

23 by a lot. LTM's for my preferred era way less trouble. Many stat outputs are within ±5%.

Always the latest version... I buy it at release, but don't convert my leagues until the final patch each year.

I've enjoyed most of the versions, but if I have to pick one to play the rest of my life it would be OOTP17.

21.
Kind of amazed how many people like 23. Game engine is awful in comparison to 21 (never played 22 so I can’t compare). Ball literally zips around all over the field. To each their own.

I have gone back to 22. The stadium views in 23 look slightly out of focus to me and strains my old eyes.

My experience is that overall 23 was a huge improvement from 22, which was a huge improvement from 21, which was a huge improvement from 20. |

v22 ball movement wasn't terrible, while 20(?) was so bad it caused motion sickness for some users. In any case every previous version I would give the 3d ball movement and autozoom a try. Every version those features were quickly turned off. The engine itself, IE the code that determines the outcome, is also much better than previous versions. A few glitches in the beginning but, that is to be expected with a new engine. |
