Stadiums

Cancun Toros

The toros home stadium is Pemex field, which is a grass open ballpark with a capacity of 42,600. The field is a power batting park with a lower hits, but higher power. The park features a 14 foot high wall in deep centerfield.

Guatemala Cannonballers

The Cannonballers home stadium is AeroQuetzal Park which is an open stadium with a capacity of 42,900. The field features a large outfield helping a higher average. Power lefties will fare well here, but right handed power batters will struggle to get the ball out over the left field fence.

Havanna Rumrunners

The Rumrunners’ home is Central Bank Park, another open and grass ballpark. This smaller park, maxing out at 37,800 is the leagues first pitchers park in this write up. It’s easy to give up the short ball, but all hitters will have a difficult time getting homers. Centerfield features a 13 foot high wall at 428 from home plate.

Panama City Cruisers

The Cruisers’ home stadium is the Thunderdome which is a retractible roof stadium and the largest in the league with a capacity of 56,800. The stadium us a relatively short outfield with a 10 foot wall. Power hitters will feast with the longball.

Port Au Princes

The Princes make their home at the Marriot International Park which is a modest stadium in the middle of a massive stadium village. Including a large… you guessed it… hotel out of right field. This park favors the left handed power bats and the right handed contact hitters.

Puerto Rico Ranas

The Ranas (spanish for frog) have the smallest ballpark in the league, a very intimate and quirky place. Triple-S Park only holds 26,596 people, but the passionate fans of Puerto Rico fill it often. The stadium favors the contact hitter and it is hard for the power bats.

Santo Domingo Primadores

The Primadores have the second dome in the league, the Alorica Dome which features artificial turf and can hold 42,300 people. The stadium favors the left handed power bat and the right handed contact hitter, but is overall a very balanced park.

Teguz Tigers

The Tigers call Startek Field home, which is an open ballpark holding 41,681 people. It is the leagues only park favoring the right handed power bat and right handed power hitter.

Team's Top Players

Cancun Toros

The toros best player is Jacob “Looney Tunes” Barke. The 30 year old starting pitcher features a fastball, cutter, and changeup and maxes out around 99 miles an hour. Barke has a big personality and is always the center of attention.

The best bat in the Toros lineup is without a doubt Jim Brewer. The old man (a young 35) is an incredibly contact hitter behind the plate, rarely striking out, and has above average power. He is a below average fielder, but more than makes up for that with his offense. He is a bit dull personality wise, but steady at the plate.

Guatemala Cannonballers

The cannonballer’s best player is left fielder Jeremy Aden who is not only a monster at the plate but on the base paths as well. He is an excellent contact hitter, base stealer and below average defender. He has a strong, commanding personality and demands respect.

On the pitching side, Justin Dicesare is the Cannonballers best arm. With a four pitch mix, Fastball, curveball, changeup, and splitter, he is able to throw up to 97 mph. He has great control with all of his pitches. He is a very intelligent player, always studying the game and the art of pitching.

Havana Rumrunners

John Tigges is the big bat in the Rumrunners lineup with excellent contact and big power. Tigges is a left handed bat who frankly doesn’t do much else, but he is a force to be reckoned with behind the plate. He is a very humble and kind person.

The Rumrunners best arm is a 25 year old starter, Bobby Trent. Trent is a groundball pitcher featuring a fastball, cutter, and a plus plus changeup. He is a fan favorite, especially beloved for his work ethic and loyalty to the club.

Panama City Cruisers

Mike “Beltin’ Bill “Simonet is going to hit a lot of dingers. The Cruisers leftie power bat has incredible power and the Thunderdome is perfect for him. Keep an eye out for him on the league leaderboards.

The cruisers have a young 24 year old pitcher who has lots of promise. He has a four pitch mix that are all plus pitches including a fastball, changeup, splitter, and forkball. He has a sidearm delivery that is very unique to look at. He is very outspoken and loves to argue with the umpire, or anyone within earshot.

Port Au Princes

The princes are captained by Mason Stone. The old man is likely nearing retirement but he is still playing well with lots of pop still in the bat. Stone is very well respected in his clubhouse and around the league. Whenever the day does come for him to retire, I would not be surprised to see him managing somewhere.

For the arms, Ernie “Virus” Hanson leads the princes. He has a five pitch mix fastball, curve, slider, changeup, and forkball. He is viewed as a leader and a winner by all around him. Hard worker, super intelligent, and loyal. The kind of guy you want to see win.

Puerto Rico Ranas

Josh Gray is the Ranas right handed power bat. Gray holds his own in center, but exceeds at left field. He is fast, and a decent base stealer, but his real talent is hitting the ball over the fence. He is a natural born leader and viewed as a captain in his clubhouse at the age of 29.

The Ranas best arm is Ben Sherman. The starter is a neutral pitcher who can throw a fastball, curve, change, splitter, and forkball. He is a leader in the Ranas clubhouse.

Santo Domingo Primadores

The Primadors best bat is Kyle Pintka. He is a great contact and power hitter, but can struggle with striking out. He is outspoken and disarmingly honest.

Jeremy Martin is the Primadores best pitcher and he is a rare starter with only two pitches. One of them, however, is a plus plus knuckleball. He only tops out at 85, but his knuckle is pretty untouchable. He is all business on the field, but he is a sparkplug in the clubhouse.

Teguz Tigers

The tigers’ Nick Meyer is incredible all around player. He is a monster with contact and homeruns behind the plat, has great speed, and has defensive versitility. He is a humble quite player, but will tear it up on the field.

The Tigers’ staff is pretty weak, but their best pitcher is a reliever named Dave Lewis. He is a typical 99 mph throwing power pitcher with a fastball and a curve. He is a total prankster in the clubhouse and quite the free spirit.

Each team's top prospect

Cancun Toros

The Toros have the best prospect in the league, Centerfielder Aaron Johnson. The 22 year old is beginning the season with the Toros AAA affiliate, the Toluca Cottonmouths. He is very well developed so far, but has some work to get his contact up. He will hopefully see the majors by the end of the year!

Guatemala Cannonballers

The Cannonballers top prospect is ranked 60 in the league, Keith Leip. He is a closer beginning the season at the AAA affiliate the San Pedro Sacatepequez Falcons. He has a 99 mile per hour fastball and a plus slider. He will struggle with walks.

Havana Rumrunners

The Rumrunners have the second ranked prospect in baseball, the 23 year old Drew Ballenger. The center fielder is a defensive monster, a speedy runner on the bases, and has the potential to develop into an incredible hitter. He is currently in AA with the Cabanas Wolf Pack.

Panama City Cruisers

Phil Koenigsberg is the Cruisers top prospect. The 24 year old is in AAA with the Atalaya Red Claws and is very near league ready. He plays the corner outfield very well, is a plus runner and hitter. He will hopefully be seen in the majors very soon.

Port AU Princes

The Princes top prospect is a very interesting one, because he doesn’t have the offensive promise that a lot of top prospects have. He is ranked number 9 in the league, and brings a lot of value with defensive flexibility. Oh yeah his name is Billy Hood, which is a pretty epic name. He plays most naturally at 2nd base, but can play all of the infield positions well, and is a decent right fielder. Offensively he has some good hit tools, but is lacking in contact, so we’ll see how he fares in the majors.

Puerto Rico Ranas

The frogs top prospect is a starter by the name of Brian Fischer who is a a solid finesse pitcher. He has a four pitch mix featuring a fastball, curve, change up and splitter. While he only tops out at 95 miles an hour, he is able to work his way around batters well. He is described by his coaches as a pitcher, not a thrower. He is an all around good guy and is a pleasure to coach.

Santo Domingo Primadores

Now here is a scary prospect, Josh Wingate. The 23 year old is techincally a prospect. but he has made the opening day roster. He is a scary groundball power pitcher with some incredible stuff. He has a plus plus changeup, plus fastball, and plus slider and can touch 98 on the radar gun. He has superior stamina to go late into games and will be dominant on the mound. I will watch his career with great interest.

Teguz Tigers

The tigers top prospect is a 23 year old starting pitcher by the name of Curt Griffith. He is a leftie with a great fastball, good changeup and good splitter. He throws in the mid 90s but has good movement on his pitches. The scouts have doubts about his mental capabilities in the game as he progresses upwards.

Opening Day 2000

Opening day May 11th, 2000

Alright, I’m ready to get into some baseball. We have a 100 game season, and the slow march through the season starts today. Here are our opening day matchups:

Cancun Toros @ Santo Domingo Primadores
Puerto Rico Ranas @ Havan Rumrunners
Guatemala Cannonballers @ Port Au Princes
Panama City Cruisers @ Teguz Tigers

Sidenote, I will not be going through every single game of the season, I’ll settle into a format eventually. I really want to follow the interesting stories of the season, providing context to what is happening, not just the facts. But for now, I’ll focus on every game of opening day. Crack of the bat, green of the grass, etc…

=====

Primadores defeat the Toros 9-4 to win their home opener. Jeremy Martin, the very interesting knuckleballer had a complete game and was dominant in the early game and survived the struggles in the late game. He had loaded the bases in the 9th with 2 outs and was able to punch out the last batter. He struggled with control, walking 6 with one of them as a hitter. He threw 153 pitches… So gotta go change some settings, also the pitchers batted. The primadores blew the game open with a 6 run 6th inning. The top of the lineup played very well including a multi-hit game form Frizzell, Keane, Pientka, and Jones.

Cancun struggled on the mound, with Barke giving up 10 hits, 8 runs, in 5 innings of work. The middle of the lineup was able to produce some hits, but overall it was a relatively quite night behind the plate.

=====

Puerto Rico Ranas 0 - Havanna Rumrunners 14

Yikes what a beating of a gameThe Rumrunner’s pitching had a clean game between Boyes and Harmon, while the Rana’s pitching struggled all around. The real highlight of this game was discovering that there is a player, John Rumer who plays for the Rumrunners. And he hit a 3 run bomb in this game. A folk hero is born.

=====

Panama City Cruisers 10 - Teguz Tigers 1

Another blowout on opening day. Stone had an incredible game, only 1 out short of a full game, but gave up 7 hits and only 1 run. Caldwell, for the tigers, struggled allowing 10 hits and 6 runs in 5 innings of work. Glimp and Norman had dominant days at the plate for Panama City with 3 hits for each. Teguz and a smattering of hits, but no dominant play.

=====

Cannonballers and Princes game was postponed due to weather, womp womp.

May 12th, 2000

Port Au Princes 7 - Guatemala Cannonballers 9

Had to watch the second day game for these two, since the first was rained out. What a fantastic back and forth game! It was 4-1 with the cannon ballers leading after the first inning. The Princes scored 5 in the 5th to go up 7-4, but the Cannonballers clawed their way back into the game. The prince’s Mason Stone hit an absolute Bomb in the 3rd inning, and drew 2 walks. Neither of the starters went late into the game, the Princes Dixon was tagged with a blown save and the loss, while the Cannonballers Fernandes got the save in dominant fashion.

Tigers 0 - cruisers 5

We have the league’s first complete game shutout tossed by the Cruiser’s pitcher, Luke Polizzi. He managed to strikeout 8 while only allowing 5 hits and no walks. He put on a dominant performance at the cruiser’s thunderdome. On the offensive side, Chris Sulzbach, the Cruiser’s center fielder was a home run shy of the cycle.

Rumrunners 8 - Ranas 10

Primadores 4 - Toros 5

May 13th

Ranas 8 - Primadores 4
Toros 1 - Rumrunners 2
Cruisers 5 - Princes 9
Cannonballers 5 - Tigers 9

=====

May 14th

Primadores 4 - Ranas 7 (12)
I watched this game, and what a fantastic game it was! Back and forth, lots of thrilling jams, and it stayed close for the whole game. For the Ranas the Josh’s (Josh Haymond and Josh Gray) had a great game including Gray’s 3 run homer in the bottom of the 12th. Interestingly enough, both teams only used 3 pitchers, which was quite fun.

Princes 3 - Cruisers 4
Tigers 7 - Cannonballers 11
Rumrunners 6 - Toros 5

Jonathan Stone out for the season

The first major injury of the year strikes the Panama City Cruisers. Their ace, Jonathan Stone, has a ruptured tricep tendon and will be out for 6 months. I turned the injuries down from the standard setting, just cause I don’t want to see a ton of big injuries in a small league. But Stone is the first victim.

10 games into 2000

Alright, I skipped through writing some games, going to try out a checkin for every 10 games, but I’ll highlight any great games or performances as I go. So after 10 games for most of the teams, here are the standings:

Caribbean division
Puerto Rico Ranas (7-3)
Port Au Princes (4-5)
Santo Domingo Primadores (4-6)
Havana Rumrunners (4-6)

Continental Division
Panama City Cruisers (8-2)
Teguz Tigers (5-5)
Guatemala Cannonballers (4-5)
Cancun Toros (3-7)

The most dominant team in the league so far is by far the Cruisers. Not only have they taken 8 of the first 10 but they have the highest run differential at +38 which is insane. They are essentially sitting in first in several offensive and pitching categories. The pitching staff is being lead by Luke Polizzi, which has a 0.52 ERA through his first two games. He has pitched 123 and 113 pitches, and has gone 9 and 8.1 innings. He leads the team (and 2 behind the league leader) for strikeouts with 16.

Highlights:

Jacob Barke of the Cancun Toros threw a 4 hit complete game shutout with now walks. His 7 strikeout day was his season high. Ironically, he has had a pretty rough start to the season, even after his shutout game, he is sitting at 6.27 ERA.

Chris Glausier has taken down the player of the week award, he is off to a crazy start. He has been a delightful hot streak for a player who doesn’t have great ratings, offensively. He has 18 hits through 44 plate appearances, and has already accumulated 1.1 WAR, and is at a comical 258 wRC+ but his babip is .500, so that’ll come back to earth.
