GM vs GM and manager

In my current sim I am doing GM since that is the aspect of the game I like the most. Yet I see my manager doing things that make me scratch my head and its been the same thing across a few different managers. Like, inexplicably putting a SP that has a rating of 67 as a starter in the bullpen when his ERA+ is well over 100.

Is my better option to just play as GM and Manager and hire good bench coaches to run the in game stuff, which I have no interest in doing. Or should I try to mess around with the settings, although I cant find settings that pertain to that particular kind of thing. It look like it is just when to pull the guy out of a game or pinch hit or hit and run with.

As GM only, you can suggest a pitcher's role or a batter's starting position/place in the lineup on that player's strategy page. Different managers will take your recommendations differently (on the manager page you can see how much control they retain over their lineup/pitching staff) with some always following your suggestions and others just disregarding them.

There is also an option in league setup, "Global Settings" Tab, bottom left, where you can set GM only to always control lineups and hiring (legacy mode)

I play GM and manager because I want to do both things, but I worry that it might unbalance the game (I'm not smart enough to say how it would) because no AI team does that. And no real baseball team does that, right? I delegate minor-league roster moves, so I suppose one could say my assistant GM has the title of General Manager but not the power to overrule my major-league roster moves. That's a model that feels consistent with stuff that happens IRL in other sports, but I'm not sure about baseball.

I might get rid of my GM because I think he's burying prospects below veteran depth players, so that isn't like a real baseball GM/manager relationship, either.

I act as both GM and Manager for my selected teams, and worse yet occasionally dip in and make trades for beleaguered teams. I enjoy both the trades and free agents and player development (but not the finances), as well as the strategy of managing. I never really gave a thought to whether it’s an unfair advantage. My results would not support that theory. It actually may be hurting my teams by doing both!

I am basically Connie Mack in most of my leagues. Owner/GM/MGR. For some of my leagues I am not a majority Owner, the Jedi Order doesn't pay that well.
When I leaave myself as just GM, I try to hire a MGR that I trust. If he messes up, it is sometimes fun to fire them. For some of them I force start various players.

Yes, that's what I do. I also set team strategy to be what I would want it to be (requires temporarily enabling commissioner mode) and lock it so when the manager changes the strategy stays the same. (Why would I hire someone who didn't agree with me on how to run the team?)

So, some might ask, why don't I just set myself and GM/Mgr? Because I don't want to see my GM name in the news stories!

I am about to start a new save, and once again, I have this dilemma. Do I GM or both GM & Manage? Being just the GM is more realistic, but without doing both, I do think the save can get boring without enough to do.

I end up splitting my decision on this. Usually I keep Hinch when playing the Tigers, lose Girardi, lose Madden. Then, try to find a Bench Coach whose game strategy I can live with.

Then I set the lineups, tweak them as necessary, but I generally don't play games out as I just don't have the time to invest in OOTP like that. Perhaps once I am retired.

I act as GM and manager but I sim all games so I speed play my seasons so it usually takes me a day or two to play a full calendar year. I don't make the in-game decisions, obviously, but I do create the lineups to some extent but the AI takes over when rest is needed. I find this a really good balance because I find t he in-game pretty boring just clicking the mouse over and over to pitch or hit.

I play GM only. I love watching my draft picks go big or go bust. I don’t care much whether I win it all or not. Rebuilding a fallen giant or taking a small market team to great heights is what does it for me.
