Out of option years
Just traded for this guy. Selected him because he had 2 option years. Yet It won't let me demote him. Says he is out of option years.
Any idea why that would be? Is my fix, just turn on commissioner and send him down? |

See it says "5" under "times optioned this year"? That's a new rule under the new CBA, you can only be optioned 5 times in a single year. The error message isn't very helpful, but the game is working correctly.

^^^ 100% accurate.
This is something that needs a little tweaking IMO as the AI doesn't seem to keep this new rule in mind and it tends to burn through the 5 options on some guys way too fast. My waiver wire is routinely littered with these guys 20 games into a given season --- so the AI is just blowing right through the 5 options with no remorse. I believe there is a way to turn the 5 option rule off. I thought I remember someone else saying that. But if you're trying to keep the rules as close to IRL as possible and not disable any rules - you really have to keep an eye on how many times someone has been optioned in a given season before claiming them. Your choices with the guy in question are to either keep him on the big league roster for the rest of the season. Or, try to pass him through waivers and if he goes unclaimed you can then demote him. If you go that route, every single time you call him up and then want to demote him again you will again have to pass him through waivers since he's already at his limit of 5. Orrrrrr, you can cheat the game a bit and trade him right now and maybe pick up a prospect or a fringe big leauger who isn't at his limit already. |

Yes, in the settings you can turn off the 5 options rule or customize it as there are different options. Anywhere from zero to ten.
settings>league settings>rules Best, IMHO, to turn it off until the AI is better able to deal with it. YMMV. |

It is a firesale season for me. So I can just let him ride. I might turn it off for future seasons, though, because they bounced him a lot. He was injured for 4 weeks of the season too. |

I've kept the option on, hence why I knew right away what the problem you were dealing with was haha. I actually kind of like the rule. Adds a bit of strategy into when and who to call up to the big roster, as opposed to just bringing one guy up and down over and over with reckless abandon. I'm okay with the rule itself ----- but the AI definitely needs some fine tuning to better follow the rule. |

The AI simply can't handle the rule right now so I just turned it off after a month. The AI already has enough problem managing its 40 man roster and guys already get waived that shouldn't, so I don't see the need to add another rule that adds even more guys who shouldn't be there on the waiver wire.
