Shohei Ohtani as a two-way player : lineup construction

Playing as the Cleveland Guardians, I'm entering 2024 and I decided to sign Ohtani as the Angels didn't extend him.

2022 was rough for us, not even playing 500 ball, but 2023 was very good with a 100+ win season (altough we did surpass our pythag by a whopping 10 win).

I kept the hitting core of the team more of less intact, with Kwan, Arias, Rocchio, Gimenez, J-Ram and Freyes still being with us. Arias and Rocchio developed into very good players. I did have to salary dump some pitching (including Bieber) to make room. This means that I'll need Shohei to start and hit. This poses a problem.

I have the Shohei rule clicked on the league rules (DH stays as pitcher) but Freyes is just an absolute stinker in the field, altough he posted 2 very good hitting seasons (115+ wrc, 50+ bombs). He needs to be a DH. I also can't trade him since I extended him when he entered arb in 2023 to a multi-year contract, but the trade AI gives him no value since I play on hardest difficulty, he can't play the field, is good but not amazing with the bat and his SO totals are guargantuan (lead the league both times). So he needs to stay with us and quite frankly, our lineup is downright scary with him in it.

Apart from using the daily lineup, which I'm not really looking forward to, is there a way to insure that ShoTime is slotted as the DH on days he is pitching, but in LF/RF when he is not, while insuring Reyes is our DH the rest of the time ?

I don't think there is a way to do this consistently besides daily lineups or manually setting lineups for each game.

The best shot might be to have Ohtani as your regular RF and Reyes as your DH and their only backups being each other. Since Ohtani can't play RF while he is pitching, that would force Reyes to move to RF and Ohtani would then be the only option at DH. I'm not sure that would even work consistently and it relies on you being okay with running Reyes out there in RF once a week (or whenever Ohtani needs a day off).

This is where some sort of way to establish battery mates would come in handy.

I ran into a problem yesterday : the game won't let me start Shohei at DH on days he is pitching, even using the daily (which wasn't as daunting as I thought since it's only 1 game every 5 game).

If I leave the DH spot empty in my lineup, the game tells me that I need to put someone at DH. If I have him slotted as DH in the daily, he can't be added at pitcher. If I just use a custom lineup with him as DH and he is slotted to pitch that day, the game just starts Freyes at DH instead of him.

The only way I can have him both bat and pitch, is to forfeit the DH by clicking the button that is in the lineup screen prior to playing out the game. This is not ideal since this means pitchers hitting and the need for PH.

I have him as a two-way player and have the Shohei rule clicked in the league rules. Maybe I'm just a dumb dumb, but I can't seem to figure this out. Not really a problem since he got hurt in May and was an okay bat for the month, but might pose a problem down the line.

When playing out a game, you have to put another pitcher in the SP slot to add Ohtani to the lineup as a DH, then put him back in at SP. It will clear out his defensive position in the batting order, but you can set it back to DH. Since this is a new rule this year, they haven't gotten all the old rules about not having players at multiple positions cleaned up in the game.

I don't use daily lineups, so I don't know how to do it with those.

This worked, thank you. Only problem is that Shohei has been terrible both on the mound and with the bat, but it's still early in July.

Since this is potentially part of the "trend" in the modern game, is it expected the 2-way player in a DH environment will be added in an intuitive way sometime very soon?

I wanna say there's another way to do this more naturally. I'll come back later tonight after I play my save where I have a couple two way players

I didn't get on to actually play my saved game so I'll post anything I find when I do play that saved game.

Ok, in the save i have a couple 2 way players, they are in my rotation and not in the default batting order. they will automatically replace my DH on the days they pitch, and then if I want to use them as a DH on their non pitching days... I add them into the batting order on the gameday screen
