Player development
Okay, this is driving me crazy. I am playing a team in the early 80's and I drafted Darryl Strawberry and at the time of the draft he was rated 20/68 (overall/potential) as he developed over the first three years as a professional he eventually got to AAA and was 35/49. As I had a very good outfield, I decided to trade him. The next season, when I came up against him he was 58/72! What gives. I had invested maximum dollars in player development. How can a player slowly decline then suddenly get so much better for another team so quickly? If he had developed like that for me, I would have kept him and made a different trade.

Whatever team you traded him to probably got him off the cocaine.

What are your scouts ratings for Major, Minor and Amateur?

Ah, of course, my minor league scouting is low and my major league scouting is high. I should adjust because he is excellent minor league scout. Thanks!

What is missing from your reasoning are stats.
This is 100% an issue with your scouting and not taking stats into consideration when evaluating players, especially prospects or younger players (I've had the same problem too and still do to some extent). Once guys get out of A ball and the competition starts to heat up, stats over a long enough sample size become very important. You'll have players who your scout is in love with regarding ratings but they have never done anything in the minor leagues, or guys that have decent ratings but who are crushing AAA at 22. In my current save I have a pitcher with great potential ratings who is supposedly the 32nd best prospect in baseball according to my scout, but he is still struggling in A+ at 24 after being drafted at 18. This guy will probably never even get to the MLB so he's trade bait for somebody younger who might fulfill his potential. Ratings inform stats, not the other way around, but unless you look at stats, there's no way to have a complete picture of that player and how he can slot into your organization. The TCR gods can also grace a player wiht a bump when they are still developing and you and your scout can't account for that. |
