Walkers news: April 3 -- Green Bay 6, St. Louis 3
Record: 0-1, 5th/(Tied/with Des Moines), 1.5 GB Louisville and Cedar Rapids
Down 1-0, Green Bay roughed up St. Louis starting pitcher Ming Xiang for five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning, and the Mallards went on to post a 6-3 Opening Day win over the River Walkers at PNC Park. The game was scoreless into the top of the sixth when Manuel Coke put St. Louis on the board with a homer off Green Bay reliever Mushankoji Okamura. Xiang had limited the Mallards to four base runners -- one single, one walk and two errors -- through the first five innings. But he came unraveled with nobody on and two outs in the sixth. Blaze Jordan got it rolling with a single. When Alberto Landaverde belted the first pitch he saw for a double, the Mallards had runners on second and third. With Conrad Perry at the plate, Xiang uncorked a wild pitch, tying the score. Perry then singled on a 3-2 pitch putting Green Bay in front. Joel Petrucci added another run with a triple. Savion McMullan was given an intentional walk, but pinch-hitter Hugo Vargas spoiled the strategy with a two-run double to make it 5-1. Green Bay added another run in the sixth, Perry collected an RBI with a single off reliever Evan Palmer. The Walkers did tally twice in the top of the eighth -- Mark Waterson drove in both with a two-out single off Rich Haas -- but that would be the end of the scoring. Green Bay starting pitcher John Haynes worked 5.1 scoreless innings, allowing four hits. He struck out seven and didn't walk a batter. Okamura (1-0) earned the win for finishing the sixth, despite allowing the Coke homer. Edwin Cervantes pitched a scoreless seventh and got the first out of the eighth. Haas was on the mound when the Walkers got their final two runs. He also finished the eighth. Matt Rodriguez struck out two of the three batters he faced in the ninth for his first save. |

The two-run shot made it 4-0 and sent Hrdlicka to the shower. The Walkers got their lone run in the seventh on a homer by Jose Segura off reliever Sam Brousseau. Juan Farias pitched seven shutout innings and St. Louis gained its first victory of the season with a 5-2 win over Green Bay at PNC Park. The Mallards took the first two games of the season-opening season. Farias (1-0) didn't allow a hit until pinch-hitter Hugo Vargas singled to lead off the bottom of the sixth. He got out of the sixth without allowing a run and did the same in the seventh. With a 5-0 lead, Farias returned to the mound for the eighth and gave a lead-off single to pinch-hitter Jim Peebles. He then left the game. For the night, Farias would allow one run on three hits. He struck out six and walked four. Walkers news: April 9 -- St. Louis 2, Madison 0
Record: 3-4, 6th, 3 GB Cedar Rapids and Louisville
Kevin Hrdlicka pitched six shutout innings and the St. Louis bullpen did the rest as the River Walkers downed Madison 2-0 at Comiskey Park (1969). The only hit Hrdlicka (1-1) allowed in his time on the mound was a fifth-inning double by Trent Rowan. Other than that, he worked six scoreless innings allowing the one hit while striking out five and issuing one walk. Kyle Smarr got the first two outs of the seventh. Evan Palmer came on to finish the seventh and got the first two outs of the eighth. Closer Tom Floria made his first appearance of the season and finished off the eighth and got the first two outs of the ninth. But he got into trouble and left the game after issuing a pair of walks. Juan Munoz took over and struck out Austin Hendrick to end it for his second save of the season. St. Louis took a 1-0 lead in the top of the third against Muskies starter Jim Burland. Mark Herman led off with a single and moved to second when Mike Vaughan reached on an error by second baseman Mark Holland. Hrdlicka then got down a bunt only to have Burland make a wild throw to third, loading the bases. Ryan Wibbenmeyer drove in Herman with a one-out single. The Walkers' other run came in the seventh when Jose Segura tripled off reliever Bryce Jaksic. He scored when Herman followed with a single. Notes: * Walkers second baseman Ryan Wibbenmeyer left the game with a strained Achilles tendon suffered while running the bases. He is expected to be out for three weeks. He was 3 for 3 in his first three at bats of the game. * Walkers right fielder Manuel Coke was 0 for 4 with two strike outs ending a 21-game hit streak dating back to the 2039 season. |

Walkers news: April 9 -- Wibbenmeyer played on 10-day injured list, Gomez called up from AAA Memphis
The St. Louis River Walkers have placed second baseman Ryan Wibbenmeyer on the 14-day injured list after he suffered an Achilles' injury while running the bases during a 2-0 win over Madison on April 8.
Wibbenmeyer, 31, is expected to miss up to three weeks. The veteran was batting .280 through the season's first three games with one RBI. Three of his seven hits came in the game where he was injured. Getting called up from AAA Memphis is 26-year-old shortstop R.J. Gomez. Thought as the team's shortstop of the future since being acquired in the offseason before the 2039 season, Gomez played well in two callups during that season. He hit .238 with two homers and nine RBIs in 28 games for the Walkers. But he has struggled at AAA. This season, in Memphis first five games Gomez has hit .167 with one homer and two RBIs. |

Walkers news: April 10 -- St. Louis 5, Madison 2
Record: 4-4, 5th/(Tied/w. Des Moines), 2.5 GB Cedar Rapids
St. Louis scored three times in the top of the first inning and went on to defeat Madison 5-2 at Comiskey Park (1969). After a flyout by Manuel Coke, Nick Shaw made it 1-0 with a double into the gap in right-center. Herman then scored on a Jose Segura ground out. It was 3-0 after Mark Waterson singled to right, scoring Shaw. The Muskies did make it close scoring twice in the seventh against the Walkers' bullpen. St. Louis starter Juan Farias lasted just 2.1 innings before leaving with a back injury. Josh Schulte drove in the first run when he reached on an bases loaded by Herman at third with Alex Rios on the mound. Walkers news: April 11 -- Madison 8, St. Louis 0
Record: 4-5, 5th/Tied/w. Des Moines, 4 GB Cedar Rapids
Chris Brakefield tossed six shutout innings and Madison beat the tar out of St. Louis starting pitcher Brent Autin, as the Muskies avoided a three-game sweep with an 8-0 win at Comiskey Park (1969). Brakefield (2-0) was dominant allowing three hits (two singles and a double) in his six innings. He struck out five and didn't walk a batter. By the time he left, the Muskies had their 8-0 lead, and their bullpen kept it that way with two scoreless innings from Jerry McCune and one from Bryce Jaksic. With the River Walkers bullpen having carried a heavy load through the season's first eight games, Autin was asked to take one for the team. It hurt. The right-hander gave up eight runs on 15 hits in six innings. He did strike out six and walk one. Madison went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second. It opened the inning with four straight singles, with Hector Hildalgo driving in one with his. Mark Holland plated the other when he hit into a fielder's choice. The Muskies banged out four more hits in the third, this time scoring three runs. Hildalgo collected two more RBIs, this time with a double. Kevin Militello made it 5-0 when he drove in a run with a fielder's choice. Jay Fitzgerald tripled off Autin in the fourth to drive in a run. He later scored on an Adam Macklin fly ball. Matthew Pankhurst homered off Autin in the fifth. Hildalgo considered his onslaught by following that with a triple. A Militello double made it 8-0. |

Walkers news: April 12 -- Cincinnati 9, St. Louis 8
Record: 4-6, 5th/(Tied/w. Des Moines), 4 GB Cedar Rapids
Cincinnati's Tom Alosio hit a two-run home run off St. Louis reliever Juan Munoz in the bottom of the eighth inning to snap a 7-7 tie and help lift the River Sharks to a 9-8 win at Riverfront Stadium. The River Walkers, who had actually scored three runs in the top of the first inning off Cincy starter Walt Myers, had scored four times in the top of the sixth to take a 7-4 lead. Manuel Coke led off the inning with a homer off Myers. Jose Ramon and Mark Waterson later had RBI doubles off Steve Behan to push St. Louis in front. A three-run homer from Sean Nettles off Walkers reliever Carlos Hernandez in the bottom of the seventh tied it for Cincinnati. In the bottom of the eighth, Hernandez retired the first two batters before giving way to Munoz. Munoz walked Brian Vargo to open his outing. Aloisio followed with his first homer of the season, sending a 3-2 pitch 349 feet over the left-field wall. St. Louis made it interesting in the ninth. Mike Vaughan led off with a double off Justin Roberson. He scored two batters later on a single by Mark Herman. But Roberson got Coke to fly out to end the game. Myers worked the first 5.1 innings, allowing four runs on five hits. He struck out three and walked four. Behan got the second out of the sixth, but nothing else as St. Louis collected three hits and three runs off of him. David Hinojosa off the sixth for Cincy and got the first out of the seventh. Walkers news: April 13: Cincinnati 11, St. Louis 6
Record: 4-7, 6th, 4 GB Cedar Rapids
Down 6-3, Cincinnati battered the St. Louis bullpen for three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and five in the seventh as the River Sharks rolled to an 11-6 win at Riverfront Stadium (1984). Quiang Chang's first two home runs of the season -- solo shots, both off Cincy starter Trevor Criswell in the first and sixth innings -- helped the River Walkers establish that 6-3 lead. Jose Roman also homered for St. Louis, a solo homer off Doug Cline in the s sixth to make it 6-2. Having chased St. Louis starter Ming Xiang after five innings, he allowed three runs on four hits and walked five while throwing 93 pitches, the Sharks went to town against the Walkers bullpen beginning in the sixth. Drew Bowser led off the three-run inning with a single off Chris Willett. He moved to third on a Kerry Fackelman double. Tom Alosio drove in the inning's first run with a fly ball to left. Leo Hermosillo replaced Willett and struck out Cory Vallie for the second out. But David Johnson tied it when he belted an 0-2 pitch 370 feet over the wall in left field for his second homer of the season. Hermosillo returned to the mound and didn't bring much with him. After a fly out to open the inning, Troy Heller singled followed by a Jonathan Hodges double which put runners at second and third. Fackelman, who last season played for St. Louis, then broke the tie with a single, scoring Heller. Alex Rios replaced Hermosillo. All he did was allow the four of the first five batters he faced to reach base. Alosio opened things up the double, scoring Hodges to make it 8-6. Pinch-hitter Alex Otero was given an intentional walk. David Johnson flew out for the second out, with Aloisio advancing to third. Felix Rivas scored Aloisio with a single. Joe Neyer connected on another single -- the sixth hit of the inning -- scoring Otero to make it 11-6. Criswell lasted five innings, allowing four runs on seven hits. He struck out two and walked three. Cline pitched the sixth inning for Cincy, allowing the final two St. Louis' runs. David Hinojosa (2-0) earned the win after pitching a scoreless seventh. Manny Fajardo handled the eighth inning and recorded the first two outs of the ninth. With two runners on thanks to errors, Justin Roberson got pinch-hitter Nick Shaw to ground out to end the game. |

Walkers news: April 14 -- Cincinnati 4, St. Louis 3
Record: 4-8, 6th, 5 GB Cedar Rapids
Tied 1-1, Cincinnati scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning and the River Sharks went on to defeat St. Louis 4-3 at Riverfront Stadium (1984). A two-out RBI double from Quiang Chang off Cincy starting pitcher Danny Garza in the top of the third had tied the game. Garza got things going against River Walkers starter Kevin Hrdlicka in the bottom of half, drawing a lead-off walk. A passed ball by catcher Alex Stewart moved Garza to second and he scored on a Kerry Fackelman double. Fackelman later scored on a two-out single by Cory Vallie. With Hrdlicka still on the mound, the Sharks pushed their lead to 4-3 in the bottom of the fifth. Tom Aloisio drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a wild pitch. Johnathan Hodges scored Aloisio with a two-out single. Mark Herman pulled St. Louis within a run when he hit a two-run homer off reliever Nate Finck in the top of the sixth. That, however, would be the end of the scoring. Garza, who worked 4.1 innings, allowing one run on three hits, and five relievers combined to strike out 12 batters. Garza struck out six and walked one. Finck (4-0) gave up the final two Walkers runs while finishing the fifth inning and also working the sixth. He earned his fourth win of the season. Doug Cline worked a scoreless seventh inning. The eighth was a combination of Manny Fajardo (0.2 IP) and Sammy Rodriguez (0.1). Justin Roberson allowed a one-out hit to pinch-hitter Tommy Gardner in the ninth. But he struck out the next two to notch his second save of the season. Walkers news: April 15 -- Cincinnati 8, St. Louis 3
Record: 4-9, 6th, 5 GB Cedar Rapids
Down 3-1, Cincinnati racked St. Louis starting pitcher Juan Farias for six runs in the bottom of the fourth inning and rode it to an 8-3 win at Riverfront Stadium (1984). The win completed a four-game series sweep for the River Sharks. It also completed a 13-game road trip for the River Walkers, where they went 4-9. St. Louis took the lead with a pair of runs in the top of the third inning off Cincy starter Dakota Franc. But Walkers starter Juan Farias could do little right when it came to the bottom of the fourth. Farias issued two walks and allowed a single in the span of the inning's first four batters to load the bases. Joe Neyer than started the scoring parade with a double. Troy Heller followed with a fly ball to center deep enough to score Cory Vallie to tie it 3-3. Pedro Egoavil singled to put the Sharks in front 4-3. Dakota Franc then reached on an error by shortstop R.J. Gomez. A Drew Bowster single made it 5-3. Tom Aloisio completed the outburst with a two-run single, as the Cincinnati lead reached 7-3. Joe Neyer would cap the scoring with a solo homer off Evan Palmer in the fifth. Sharks starter Dakota Franc (1-0) went five innings, allowing three runs on seven hits. He struck out seven and walked one. Three relievers, Nate Finck (1.1 IP), Brendan Pearson (1.2) and David Hinojosa (1.0), combined to finish the game. For the second straight contest, the Cincinnati pitchers combined to strike out 12 batters. |

Walkers news: April 17 -- St. Louis 11, Chicago 7
Record: 5-8, 6th, 5 GB Cedar Rapids
Trailing 3-1, St. Louis exploded for six runs in the bottom of the sixth inning and went on to defeat Chicago 11-7 in their home opener at Busch Stadium (2006). All of the early scoring came in the first inning. The G-Men got to River Walkers starters Brent Autin for three runs in the top of the inning. A two-run homer from Ramiro Hernandez being the big blow. Mark Herman went deep off Chicago starter Greg Sadler in the bottom half making it 3-1. Sadler got into trouble early to open the bottom of the sixth, and it was of his own doing. He walked two batters, hit another and allowed a single as four straight Walkers hitters reached base. The hit by pitch Jose Ramon drove in the inning’s first run. Mark Waterson followed that with a sac fly to tie the game. Clayton Ganley replaced Sadler, but the Walkers continued to do damage. Mike Vaughan singled, scoring the inning’s second run. R.J. Gomez then cleared the bases with a double, as St. Louis went ahead 6-3. It became 7-3 when Quiang Chang doubled with two outs, scoring Gomez. A three-run sixth did allow Chicago to pull back to within 7-6 Reliever Alex Rios took a pounding, allowing four of the seven batters he faced to reach base. Juan Gonzalez led off the inning with a homer. Nate Ungaro followed with a double and crossed the plate on a Kyren Paris single. Paris stole second and scored on a two-out single by Josh Rosborough. But all of the rest of the scoring would be done by St. Louis. Jose Segura and Ramon hit solo homers off former Walker reliever Brett McVey in the seventh, making it 9-6. The Walkers tallied two more times in the eighth off Justin Sterner. Nick Shaw drove in the first run with a flyball to left-center. Ramon collected his third RBI of the game with a single. Autin (2-1) was all right after his rough start. He went six innings, allowing three runs on eight hits. He struck out four and didn’t walk a batter. Rios went 1.2 innings, giving up the three seventh inning runs before getting the first two outs of the eighth. Leo Hermosillo finished off the eighth. The ninth belonged to Chris Willett who gave up a run, but didn’t allow the game to become close. |

Walkers news: April 18 -- Chicago 11, St. Louis 1
Record: 5-10, 6th, 5 GB Cedar Rapids
St. Louis starting pitcher Agustin Perdomo gave up a lead-off home run to Chris Gibbs on the first pitch of the game -- he also got injured and had to exit the contest -- and it didn't really get better from there as the G-Men routed the River Walkers 11-1 at Busch Stadium (2006). Pitching for the first time since he started a brawl in his first start of the season -- he hit a batter instigating things and later was hit with a nine-game suspension -- Gibbs launched the first pitch of the game 388 feet over the right-field fence to open the scoring. Perdomo subsequently left the game with pain in his forearm. He is expected to miss up to three weeks. St. Louis may not mind if he missed the remainder of the season. Unfortunately, is under contract for three more beyond this one. Any way, the River Walkers relieved with starting pitcher Ming Chiang who was on full rest. He lasted until the seventh -- Chicago scored once in the fifth and twice in the sixth to go up 4-1 -- but the G-Men really cut loose in the seventh. Pinch-hitter Nate Ungaro led off with a double off Xiang. He scored on a Val Moreno single, two batters later, making it 5-1. Carlos Hernandez took over. Dave Hutchison greeted him with a single. Josh Rosborough followed with an RBI double pushing it to 6-1. Hutchison later scored on a wild pitch as the G-Men lead grew to 7-1. Chicago made it really ugly with a four-run top of the ninth. Evan Palmer gave up four runs on three hits, along with one walk and two wild pitches. Both wild pitches scored runs. Ramiro Hernandez had an RBI double. Walkers news: April 19: Perdomo placed on 10-day IL with forearm injury
The St. Louis River Walkers have placed starting pitcher Agustin Perdomo on the 14-day injury list after he left his team's 11-1 loss to Chicago on April 18 after one inning because of forearm tendinitis.
Perdomo has made two starts this season and lasted just six innings. He left his first start after five innings, after he was ejected for starting a brawl by purposely hitting a batter with a pitch. Perdomo's has no record for the season and a 4.50 ERA. Getting called up from AAA Memphis is right-handed relief pitcher Adam Tresidder. Signed in the offseason as a free agent, Tresidder has pitched in four games for the Redbirds going 0-1 with an 8.31 ERA. For his career, the 35-year-old has pitched in 55 major-league games going 1-2 with one save and a 2.79 ERA. Nate Simmons is expected to be called up from AAA when Perdomo's spot in the pitching rotation comes around. |
