Earned Run Scoring Error
Just had a game with an inning where a run was scored, and the game counted this run as an Earned Run, but I think it's incorrect.
Situation: Batter #1: Reaches 1st on an Error by the 1B. Batter #2: Grounder to third, 3B forces the runner (Batter #1) at 2B. Reaches 1st on a Fielder's Choice (scored this way, in my opinion correctly, in the game). Batter #3: Runner on 1st (Batter #2) steals second. Batter #3 then Singles to RF, scoring Runner from second (Batter #2). Batter #4: Runner on 1st (Batter #3) Caught Stealing. Batter #4 then Strikes Out. The game scored the run as an Earned Run, but I think this is incorrect. The official MLB definition of Earned Run is "any run that scores against a pitcher without the benefit of an error or a passed ball. Often, it is the judgment of the official scorer as to whether a specific run would've scored without the defensive mishap." So, would the run have scored without the benefit of the error in this case? Batter #1: Out at 1st, without the error. If the Official Scorer thought the out wouldn't have been made, even without the fielding mishap, the play would have been scored a hit, and not an Error. Batter #2: Out at 1st, without the error on Batter #1. With no runner on 1st, the 3B throws the ball to 1st to get the batter instead of to 2nd to get the runner. Again, the Official Scorer agrees, as he scored it a Fielder's Choice. If the OS thinks the batter reaches safely, even if the fielder throws to 1st, he scores it a hit, and not a FC. Batter #3: With no runners on base, he singles. Then is thrown out stealing for the 3rd out. Inning over, no runs scored. Therefore, run should be Unearned. Tony |
