The (Un)checklist

What are some default settings that you disable/tweak during the creation of a new save?

A couple of mine…
1. Baseball cards
2. Automatic evolution

Owner goals, storylines, baseball cards, suspensions, automatic evolution, advanced draftee signing, rainouts, all-star vote popularity, two-way players, ties, modified extra innings, minimum batters faced, draft lottery.

I have quite a little list. Mostly personal preference things.

Preseason Predictions set to On Demand

This turns off the automatic generation of the season predictions on Opening Day.

It looks like I’m going to be adding another one to my list now…two way players.

I am still wondering about owner controls budget…one one hand it make finances more challenging/interesting (and it needs anything it can get…seriously) but the extra money might also help the AI controlled teams.

David,

What advantages do you see turning off personality, morale and team chemistry? Any downside that you've noticed?

I also turn off rainouts… why two way players? Do you feel the game creates too many of them? Or?

I don't manage or gm so I don't really think there's any advantages. I just refuse to think that there are so many miserable players making a living playing baseball. The red frowning faces drive me nuts. I think if I did manage or gm, I would probably leave them on, as they would add another aspect to the game.

I play historical and a lot of random debut. One time when I had two way players on, Madison Bumgarner was hitting 5th in a team's lineup as the DH. He was hitting well under .200.

I would actually leave rainouts on if I though I would remember to turn them off when the post season rolls around. I just don't want game 6 of the World Series decided by a game that didn't go the distance.

Somebody sure thinks Logan Webb is a miserable jerk, and I remember one year where Kevin Cash hated all his players.

I use the settings but I go through and fix the non-Milton Bradley buys.

I thought that I read somewhere that postseason games are not allowed to be rained out, like it's hardcoded. Is that not true? If I leave rainouts on, playoff games could be affected?

I always leave rain outs on, and have never seen a playoff game be rained out. I've had rain delays but no rain outs.

A cool idea would be to be able to go into advanced settings and set up a bunch of defaults - like the ones described in this thread - so, for example, a gamer who always or never uses baseball cards and owner goals can always have those set to checked or unchecked, etc...

The problem the developers would face in trying to decide what to make default is the same issue we see here - different opinions from everyone on what they use and don't use.

Even just for myself it depends on the league type I am playing as to what I want turned on and off.

I personally like having rain outs always turned on. I want to use the full scouting, personality and coaches in my fictional sims but usually not in my historical play. I hate having the DH turned on at any point prior to 1972 AL in a historical sim and never want it in a fictional sim. I am good either way for two-way players but despise the 3-batter min. for relievers. I don't like the Hall of Fame defaulting to on in year one of my fictional league nor do I want all of those 'extra' awards like reliever of the year in a fictional sim set in the 1930s.

There are likely as many opinions from us collectively as to what should and should not be set as default as there are possible options so it is a can't win situation for the developers to try and please everyone.

I think the best bet is for the developers to use the default settings to mimic a modern day real player game as I expect that is the largest market and I imagine a good percentage of historical players and even fictional players like to tinker with things a bit so are likely more comfortable tweaking settings. But that's what makes all of these available options so important, for those so inclined to tweak their leagues how they like.

I don't think it's so much of an advantage/disadvantage thing as it is personal preference. I mostly play historical and so I don't want my games to be influenced by (what I assume to be somewhat or fully) random personality, morale and team chemistry ratings. For fictional, maybe. But another gamer might have different preferences

I believe that is true. Personally, I think it's cool when postseason games can be affected by rainouts (like the 1962 and 1975 World Series', for example). But I'm comfortable with OOTP not trying to manage that process.

What I do instead: Once the matchups for any postseason series are set - I check the actual historical weather for the host city and make a determination from there. I don't try to have partial/unofficial cames called, or try to introduce rain delays (wouldn't know how to do that even if I wanted to), but this can add a bit of realism - and unpredicibility to the flow of a series - upon occasion.

(Note: If historical weather is not available for a particular city/year, then I'll randomly choose a different year and go with that weather. For example, if I need weather in Los Angeles for October 1920, that data is not readily available. So instead I'll randomly choose a year between 1930 - when data for LA is available - and current, and use that weather.)

My thinking that's true is why I always turn rainouts off because I don't want there to be a different set of rules for the playoffs than exists for the regular season. If I have rainouts on, it should potentially happen to all games, including postseason games, at least in my opinion.

That is a really interesting way of incorporating rainouts into the postseason of a historic game.

The only default setting that I think is egregiously wrong is League Evolution being on.

To me there should be no default setting whose purpose is to change the settings of a game that the user initially experiences. If I start an modern MLB game I expect it to mirror (as close as possible) the modern MLB and not radomly relocate a team or change the rules.. If I set up a historical MLB game it should mirror the environment that I chose. If I set up a fictional league I should not have to change a setting to keep the game from randomly changing what I set up.

Granted I can, and do, turn off league evolution but I don't understand why the default is to allow the game to randomly change itself.
