Backup Save - question

The irony in this problem is just awesome. But.....

I've never run a backup save before. Never. Ever.

But in reading some other threads about crashes and lost saves, I figured this might not be a bad idea.

I've now attempted to run a backup twice. Seems pretty straight forward. Chose "backup game" from the drop down menu. Easy.

The backup begins...... and 1 minute into it, it freezes. I get the "not responding" message. I wait it out for a bit, hoping it gets back to normal. Nope.

I'm only 1 season in, there shouldn't be that much data. The actual save file is like 1.1 gb.

If I lose or corrupt my save while attempting to backup my save, I'm going to jump in front of a train. So I don't want keep screwing with this more than I have to.....

But my simple question is this..... am I missing something here? You just select backup game from the drop downs and let it do its thing, right?

Okay, disregard the post. The backup was successful on the 3rd try.....

That was intense. I need a drink. It's 10am, right?

It can take a LOOOOOOOONG time when you have a big save, be patient and keep trying.

Yeah the first backup takes a ton of time. During your first backup, just like your retirement fund, don't even bother looking at your computer because it will just make you nervous.

If you're not doing this already, consider a backup program for your PC or Mac. I use Macrium Reflect Home but there are other backup programs available also. This backs up my entire PC once a week and incrementally the other six days. Then no matter what happens I can restore files or folders on demand. Losing your OOTP save is bad enough but losing all of your PC data is much worse.

I dont do the back up the traditional way, I zip up every season of my league folder. That way it's 100% exactly what I've had before whatever crash I've had.

I've used the back up and a couple of times I've tried to back up and then restored it later because something got messed up, I see some weird things in the player histories. So I don't do it that way anymore and just use zip files instead. Probably about the same amount of time I guess so I doubt it helps

I do exactly what you do. I like the traditional way to to back to my saves. I backup on Jan 1 and have a bat file that deletes all the boxscores and messages so my league is very old over 125 seasons yet only about a gig a space when backed up.

Nice, I never thought about deleting the other stuff. Can you pm how you go about doing that? I'd be very appreciative if that

I use Macrium Reflect. I've used it for 6 or 7 years and never had an issue. It's a great option. I think there might be a free version. There are other free options, including the one that comes with the operating system.

I have a NAS, so in addition to backing up the whole PC, I also copy the save folder to the NAS when I think it's a good time to do so. This could easily be done to an external drive. They aren't expensive. I think you can get a 2TB USB drive for about $75.

I might use OOTPs backup option once, but I don't use it as my primary option.
