Major, major issue

so, the game just randomly decided to REMOVE one of my players from the player pool, midseason, no explanation.

no, he didn't retire. he just disappeared off my roster for no reason. one of my best pitchers for the past 3 years. gone.

EDIT: it actually is making them a free agent, and it is completely WIPING their entire history. it keeps service time, draft info, name, and abilities, but the entire history of stats and games pitched for my franchise is gone. This sucks.

Is there a fix?

EDIT: this wasn't just ONE player. it was like half my bullpen.

I figured out a way to get them back. If I go to the previous game logs I can find the player and assign them back to my team, but it is also wiping the entire history of their career stats and everything.

how disappointing... has anybody else encountered this and is there a way to restore their stats and such?

no, i didn't have a backup from like 2 games before this happened. i usually backup like 2-3X a season.

is there any dev who can provide insight to this? every game I sim I feel I'm risking major pieces of my franchise's history. been playing my same sim since OOTP 21 and I really wanna preserve it as best I can

This sounds like the save files may be getting corrupted.

As to why this happens, and how to prevent it, there are a few things that can cause corruption. This potentially includes unexpected system shutdowns or crashes especially while a league is saving, bad sectors on the hard drive the game is saved to, memory glitches on your computer (especially possible if the league is left open for very long periods of time without the game being shut down or restarted) or interference from other programs, especially disk cleaners or anti-virus programs.

Some of what you might do to prevent that from coming up again would be to regularly defrag your hard drive as well as check it for errors, don't leave OOTP open and running with a league loaded overnight or for long periods when you are not actually using the game, make sure to shut your computer off or at least restart it occasionally and also run as few other programs in the background at the same time as OOTP as possible.

For programs that need to be running at the same time, like an anti-virus or firewall, definitely make sure that the OOTP program itself, but also the data directory and the saved games directory are all whitelisted in any anti-virus or anti-malware programs on your system. That's probably the most important step of all those mentioned, as the majority of the cases of corruption will tend to come from these types of programs.

I dont have any anti-virus or anything like that. i do leave OOTP opening for long periods with some other programs (internet browser primarily) but i've always done that since OOTP 21 and never had this issue.

i have seen other weird occurences though, such as some players when it shows their personality type on the profile page it says an error like this:

also sometimes when i click the team shedule page, it gives me a series of errors before getting to display the schedule (this one is hard to replicate as it only happens once every 2 months or so of simming)

honestly is anybody else dealing with this? this game is like borderline unplayable and im playing with the latest patch, and its almost July.

i was able to replicate the other error with going to the team schedule that touched on a couple messages ago.

Template errors and Category Not Found errors are due to not having the proper files installed locally.

In either case, please verify what data folder you are using, and ensure that the files are up to date. If you are using a custom data folder, you may need to copy files from the default installation location.

The category not found issue may be related to the above, but if you have a custom english.txt file in the saved game directory, I believe the game will use that file for the save. If you had a custom file and have imported your game through versions, that file is unlikely to contain new text items that were added in recent versions.

That doesn't necessarily explain the roster moves. That doesn't explain those situations. I would suggest checking in your team's transaction logs to see if anything shows up there for the dates. Sometimes if you are on Do Not Disturb mode the AI may handle some roster moves. Or if running a game with historical transactions players will move around.

All of this still sounds like potentially issue with some critical files in the OOTP install location getting corrupted to me, which I do think could also explain the player's history getting deleted (if likely not the roster moves themselves, as Matt mentions).

okay this is getting ridiculous now.

literally my AAA and AA teams were erased almost completely.

I now have 6 combined players between the 2 levels. LOL...

i need someone to help me before my entire save that i've had for 3 versions of OOTP is just completely gone.

Thanks for the reply.

In regards to the last point, I've checked the transaction logs. I have checked everything. I dont use do not disturb at all. And I've scoured the entire game looking for a couple of my main players that were lost.

They're literally just gone from the game. The only evidence there is that I am not entirely crazy and that these players did even exist is by referencing old box scores. and even then, when i hover over the players name in the box score, a DIFFERENT randomly generated player's name shows up.


In regards to the text files and such, I have used the pretty default (and only) method I was taught over the past 3 years to import my game from the old version to the new version. And i never had these #error messages. are you saying that there is no fix for that and thats just how the game will operate now moving forward or is there a way to address that?

of course stuff changes with tech hardware over time, i just will say though, that ive been using the exact same computer setup since 2020 on the exact same computer and ive never had this issue.

im on a mac. is there a way to ensure there are all the proper permissions and such allowed?

You shouldn't get this error when importing an old game if things go well. It's not a limitation of the game itself, either now or going forward.

So as with all the other stuff you're describing, there's definitely something weird going on with your system that's causing some corruption, missing files etc. The thing now is to try to figure out just what it is that's causing that.

I'm not really overly familiar with Macs, so hard to give precise instructions.

I uninstalled and re-installed the most recent update of OOTP 23 on my computer. also checked all the permissions and such. everything is set up properly, its just still not working.

This is quite puzzling given that the sort of permissions issues you're seeing do not typically tend to happen on Macs so much given that Macs handle permissions a lot differently than Windows.

I think the next most helpful thing might be for you to turn on debug mode, then to run the game a little, and do some stuff in it, including some of the stuff that throws up errors for you and then send us the trace files that are generated. There may be something there that will be helpful in figuring out what may be causing the issues (or may not, but it's worth a try).

and now when i try and use the editor to uncheck the option to give them a minor league contract, and manually assign them to my minor league team, it literally deletes them from the game.

this is insane.

As I've mentioned before, the stuff you're describing here are not regular bugs. Given all you're describing, there's definitely some corruption going on with the game and the save files, so until and unless we figure out what it is that's causing this, I would guess you're likely to continue to see odd things happening. If you can try to run things with generating some of the trace files as I mentioned in my previous post, we can look those over and hopefully get an idea of where some of that might be coming from and go from there.
