How to generate more power play chances?
I just finished year 17 of my Vancouver Canucks save. In that time I have won four Stanley Cups and finished runner up four more times. I have led the league in goals seven times in the last eight years.
I don't write that to get a pat on the back - I do it to show that I'm doing something right when it comes to roster building and tactics (for whatever they are worth). Despite all of this success, I have managed to finish last in power play chances 12(!) times in those 17 seasons, and never better than 27th. I would think that with a very talented team, I'd be drawing penalties left and right. This season in the NHL, Colorado, Florida and Tampa Bay ranked 1-3 in power play opportunities (as you would expect). So my question is this: what do I need to do to generate more power plays? More/less passing? Tempo? Thoughts? |

Shoot more, have a playmaker on the line, a center who is good in front of the net, and a sniper. Two good D with great passing and shooting certainly help. I must say, I only finished at 19% this season, so take my advice with a grain of salt, but I have been closer to 27% previously. I do have 4 rookies/second year's on the PP this year, so maybe that was it.

There's a number of little things you can do. For example, if you're not playing 'Challenge,' you can turn on commissioner mode and simply increase the number of penalties per game. Also, you can try to acquire player(s) with the 'infuriating' special ability. (These guys specialize in getting under their opponents skin and goading them into taking more penalties).
