gm?

For those of you that play as the GM, do you also play as the manager but also sim your games? i'm trying to figure out if i can be successful and achieve a winning team by playing the game this way

I play as GM+Manager but sim about 150 games a year. I use Daily Lineups to stop my manager from making terrible subs/lineups, and manually set all the Strategy Sliders.

Color me a control freak, but I manage games as well as act as GM. It just seems like the AI manager makes game decisions I don't like - even when I set weekly lineups and rotations and program strategy for him. For me the challenge of managing is at least equal to the challenge facing a GM to find and sign players and develop new talent. I want both parts.

I'm gm only but I slowly take over things that my manager does poorly like forcing lineups and pitching roles. however they still suck at using my bullpen, even with pitching l/r match-up slider set to max they make terrible use of the pen

I play as GM and set lineups but not daily lineups. I sim out all but a few games. So the manager makes day to day decisions on how to rest and in game strategy decisions. The manager will rest players as needed according to the depth chart and adjust the lineup when it does I believe. It will also determine to sometimes go with highest rested SP since I don't use strict rotation. The manager does is in game substitutions as well.

I like managing games sometimes but I am more about team building so I let the AI do all the day to day stuff while I make roster moves and adjust the basic lineup and pitching staff. I believe that still allows the manager to make changes on a day to day basis based on day to day injuries and rest. I focus on the big picture with some roster and general lineup/pitching staff moves but it gives the manager (AI) freedom to make day to day decisions. For me the only difference between selecting GM and GM+manager is if I can hire a manager. Under GM and manager my bench coach is really handling day to day operations on the field.

If you use daily lineups you can control rest and who starts more but I generally don't. It isn't quite modern baseball where the front office makes day to day lineup decisions and even some game decisions but it is a compromise for me since I am more about building the team than running it day to day.

The problem im having is if I have a manager he will only allow me to change certain things when it comes to strategy

You can definitely win doing this. I don't even alter my strategy all that much. I just make sure my depth charts and lineups are the way i like them. 8 championships with 2 different organizations over 25 years.

yes, some managers are annoying in that way. I try to find managers that either allow me to tinker or already share some of the same strategic preferences as me, but it doesn't always work out that way

I play about equally GM=Manager and GM only. When GM only, I find part of the strategy / fun is actually finding a Manager who leans towards the strategies I want. For the absolutely terrible decisions I disagree with I rely on Player strategies.

Can he be aggravating at times? Yep, but so can that player who refuses to negotiate with me despite being out of work Opening Day. I just chalk it up to immersion. If I want a base stealing team that puts the 1982 Cards to shame... I just have to find a manager who is aligned with my thinking and hope he is not a moron for everything else Manager related.

I GM but set my default lineups and starting rotation. However, I will juggle the 5th starter out of the rotation when he is going to miss a turn, and the spot starter into the rotation 3 days before he will need to start (historical sims have doubleheaders where this is an issue).

The point of this is to make sure the spot starter doesn't get used in relief 1-2 days before his start (the AI will screw this up sometimes), and that the 5th starter doesn't go idle for too long.

I don't set any reliever assignments since I'm not big on bullpen specialization. I just set everyone in the bullpen as a middle reliever and let the AI manager decide who to use when.

By the same token, I don't set pinch-hitter or pinch-runner assignments as well.
