A question about setting up fictional leagues with real towns

To those of you who create your own leagues with real towns... how do you go about setting the finances for the league and teams and all of those details? I'm creating a 12 team league of (mostly) small Massachusetts towns, and not sure how to go about handling finances, or if I should just play with them off.

I guess it depends on what you want. You can set up generalized league financial settings that will affect all teams. You can also then edit each team with things like market size, fan interest as well which plays into it.

It has been a few years since I last did it and I am currently in the middle of doing it again however, I try to set up my fictional worlds so the financials are as equal as possible.

I originally let the AI set things up and then I go in and adjust the owner ratings, the percentage of what teams get of media deals, etc.

I do not make ticket prices universal, they can vary.

My main goal is to make the financial part of the game somewhat equal for each team, so the success and failure of each team is heavily determined on the ball field, not in the financial books, by an owner or an accountant!

Personally, I like to start with an Inaugural Draft. This allows an equal-ish talent distribution across the league to start. To set up the financials, I also include a draft budget for each team. There is an option to adjust draft budget by population size so as long as you have each team's location set properly, you will get teams' market sizes set up in a realistic way. You can also just tweak them however you want, so if you want equal market sizes, make all draft budgets equal.
