I hope the Yankees make it to the Supreme League. That’s where they belong!

Saturday, June 9, 1957 BIG BOYS BATTLE THIS SUNDAY IN SUPREME AND SECONDARY LEAGUES All across South Island the main focus is on winning the pennant. However, promotion is also on the minds of many of the teams, especially in the South Island Secondary League. 2 of those clubs will move up to the Supreme League next season. There are many important games tomorrow afternoon. 4 of the main contenders in the Supreme League will go up against one another. First place Mystic (8-2) will travel to 3rd place Kofa (6-4) and 3rd place St. Dominic (6-4) is on the road against 2nd place Delta (7-3). it's an even bigger slate in the Secondary League. The top 2 teams, Anderson (7-3) will tangle at Meraux (9-1). 3 teams tied for 3rd place are also in action. Billings (6-4) goes to Delacroix (3-7), Littleville (6-4) is playing in Gull Lake (5-5) and New Yerby (6-4) will host Cherrywood (3-7). The Meraux Tigers (9-1) have already secured one of the promotional spots to the Supreme. They would also like to win the Secondary League pennant. So would the Anderson Ravens (7-3). The Billings Rams, Littleville Supermen and New Yerby Yankees still could nab a spot in the Supreme League should Anderson falter over the last 2 weekends. The pennant race in the Supreme League has pretty much come down to the first place Mystic Mariners (8-2) and the runner-up Delta Stars (7-3). However the Kofa Kings (6-4) and the St. Dominic Saints (6-4) are technically still in the chase. The South Island Leagues have 2 games left on the schedule. The umps are enforcing the rules these days, checking pitchers out after each half inning... some pitchers are no longer quite as dominant. Still Cole is a pretty good starter... Yanks don't seem to have any dependable starters after him. |

MY LIFE IN 1957
EC's Lookin' for Heaven in '57 Ahh... June, 1957 is truly a great time to listen to the radio... that's where most of us got our music in the 50s... no one had really started collecting records yet except for the dizzy lizzies, the ditzy teenyboppers who fell in love with teenage idols Elvis, Ricky Nelson and Pat Boone... those teenyboppers bought almost all of the 45s sold at that time and dominated the pop Billboard chart... 33 RPM albums were just coming out and only old folks bought them for adult pop, broadway musicals and classical music... yep, 45s were the thing for the young gals and little darlin's. Let's go back to the 3rd of June, 1957... on the radio the whole wide USA was listening to Pat Boone and his #1 song "Love Letters in the Sand"... he replaced Elvis Presley and "All Shook Up" which had been the top song for 8 weeks in a row. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EviXbSlbY-Y Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-28-2022 at 03:57 PM. |

And for all y'all out in the country Gentleman Jim Reeves was on top of the Billboard country chart with a sad saga in song "Four Walls".
Yep, if EC was a beer drinker, I would be cryin' in it. But I don't touch the dastardly tasting stuff... guess I will just have to sip on my ice cold RC Cola and nibble on my Moon Pie. That my friend is the Champagne and Caviar of the South. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KSvZN6W8n_0 Last edited by Eugene Church; 02-28-2022 at 03:59 PM. |

Monday, June 9, 1957 MYSTIC STILL ON TOP OF SI SUPREME, BUT HAS 3 CHALLENGERS FOR PENNANT WITH ONE GAME LEFT The Mystic Mariners (8-3) have been on top ot the South Island Supreme standings just about the whole season... but they suddenly stumbled and lost the last two games and now find themselves in jeopardy... the Mariners are being pressed by 3 teams, St. Dominic, Delta and Kofa... those clubs are just one game out of first place with 7-4 records... Mystic has to win the final game of the season against last place Guedon to snare the pennant... two clubs are assured of being relegated to the South Island Secondary League next year... the 11th place Pelham Oaks (3-8) and 12th place Guedon Gators (1-10) will be demoted. The Kofa Kings caused all the chaos by knocking off Mystic 8-6 yesterday afternoon... in another critical matchup, the St. Dominic Saints were also troublemakers... they kept the Delta Stars out of a first-place tie by upending them 3-1... Bar Harbor pounded Pelham 10-5... Zebulon eased by poor Guedon 3-2... Moon Valley outscored St. Luke's Place 9-7... and St. Pete won a close one from Jackson 6-5. It will be a make-or-break weekend next week... Mystic closes out the season at home against hapless Guedon... St. Dominic has a tough task in Moon Valley... Delta will travel to Jackson... and Kofa will welcome the St. Pete Pelicans... a 4-way deadlock for first place is possible, but not likely... but a playoff for the pennant could happen should the Guedon Gators do the unlikely and upset the Mystic Mariners... next Sunday will be an exciting way to end the Supreme League season. |

MY LIFE IN 1957
EC's Lookin' for Heaven in '57 Yep, it's time to take a gander at March Madness and the NCAA College Basketball tournament... 7-foot-1 Wilt Chamberlain is playing for the Kansas Jayhawks... North Carolina is unbeaten and hasn't loss a game the entire season... Bill Russell and K. C. Jones are gone from the San Francisco Dons, so that great run is over... the big schools are back... the Final 4 teams are #1 ranked North Carolina (27-0), #2 ranked Kansas (21-2), #11 rated Michigan State (14-8), along with #43 rated San Francisco (21-7)... yep, despite not being well-thought of, the Dons are back again... Phil Woolpert must have been a heck of a coach. In the semi-finals North Carolina edged the Spartans 74-70... ooh, ooh, ooh... that was a little too darn close for comfort... Wilt and Kansas easily romped past the unsung Dons 80-56... so it's #1 against #2 in the finals... and in one of the greatest basketball games of all-time, the Tarheels prevailed over Wilt and the Jayhawks in a ding-dong dilly 3-overtime thriller 54-53. North Carolina finishes the season 32-0, led by coach Frank McGuire and 6-5 forward Lenny Rosenbluth... some how, some way, the Tarheels beat perhaps the greatest basketball player of all-time, 7-footer Wilt Chamberlain... the greatest would have to be him or Bill Russell... I lean toward Russell because he won championships... Wilt could not beat him very often... and just so you know, EC would put the great Minneapolis Laker center George Mikan #3 and maybe that wonderful LSU Tiger and St. Louis Hawk superstar Bob Petit, who is still alive and 90 years old, at #4... Russell is himself 88... Jerry West (Zeke From Cabin Creek)... would be #5... yep, West is still a spring chicken at 84, you all Last edited by Eugene Church; 03-29-2022 at 06:44 PM. |
